rice cereal in bottle? PANIC!
My 2-month-old, 9.5lb dd sees a GI doctor for a milk allergy (on Rx formula). She only put on one pound in the past month (yet she has remained consistenly in her growth curve, albeit a below average percentile). She only eats between 14-17 ounces daily. She still poops about 7-9 times/day, and it is loose and mucousy.
The GI doctor recommended putting in rice cereal into every bottle to 1) add more calories to her diet, and 2) reduce the number of BM's and help it bind a little more. It seemed to make sense in the office.
I didn't know all of the negatives of rice cereal in bottle until I got home and looked it up. Now I'm terrified to start it.
Has anyone started DC on rice cereal in the bottle?

Stop googling! Sounds like you got a good medical opinion from a doctor who specializes in pediatric GI and is applying the information to YOUR child specifically.
I had some cereal (rice then wheat) in a bottle to start exposing my kid to cereal allergens as per my pediatrician because she wasn't eating for a short while. No problem what-so-ever. She started eating them at 5 months herself.

It's common to put rice cereal in the bottle of babies with digestive issues.
I would buy some level 2 nipples before you start since it may be hard for your DD to drink the thicker liquid through a level 1 nipple.

Agree with above poster, stop googling, its the enemy. Your Dr would not tell you to do something that will harm your baby.
I had to give my preemie DS rice in his bottles bc he had issues with consuming too much & still being hungry. I'm happy to report it worked out just fine.

We did it with no problems. But I had to find nipples specifically made for cereal. They had an x or y shaped cutout to allow the cereal to pass thru

While I would not randomly advise on puttign rice in the bottle I would do it on the advice of a GI Dr.
Just make sure you follow Drs directions and get the proper nipple.

I'm sure the Dr. would never tell you to do something that would put your child at risk or in danger.
When I was having serious doubts about something my ped once told me, someone very light heartedly told me "He is the one with the PhD - not you. "

In the medical field it's important to compare the risks vs. benefits. So if your GI doc is giving you this advice it's probably because he/she believes it is to your baby's best benefit. Monitor the baby for changes that may signal allergies or other side effects and see how your baby does. Hope all is well.

Can you get a second opinion? I know this is not a popular opinion around here but rice cereal (or grains in general) can cause intestinal damage and other problems in the long run when introduced too early.

They give cereals with gastro issues when the benefits outweigh the negatives. My DD was on oatmeal for reflux but it didnt help so I stopped. If it worked then Id have her on it.

My preemie was put on bottles with rice cereal at two weeks old, 35 weeks gestational age, for reflux induced apnea ( he was holding his breath because the reflux bothered him). We saw many different neonatologists and my ped specializes in GI issues. Not one doctor wanted him to stop with the cereal in the bottle. We had to go to follow up preemie clinic run by NICU staff out of Schneider's/LIJ and when I mentioned stopping it in the bottles they were like, why would you do that? It's fine putting the cereal in the bottle. So bottom line is, I saw many different doctors, and not one of them had problems with cereal in his bottles. At 21 months he's doing great, no issues!

I am curious what weight your DD was born at? My DD has only gained 1lb per month and it has me so worried. She poops and spits up alot too but has been 20-25th percentile on a steady curve the whole time and the ped said keep doing what I am doing. I am not doing any rice cereal yet.
Anyway sorry I cannot help you with the rice thing but just sorta glad to hear I am not alone with my thoughts.
