I'd also like to add that I think I would EXCEL at pulling over to the side of the road safely and THEN pulling out my cell to call. THAT is my specialty.
Me too, never changed my own tire. LOL

Re: Random Monday Poll
my dad was the same. I had to be able to change my tire and check my oil.
It definitely came in use.

Re: Random Monday Poll
I don't even know how to pump my own gas LOL definitely don't know how to change a tire nor would I ever do it. I have AAA but I can think of 10 guys I could call to help me before it came to that. (DH, my dad and my FIL being the top 3!)

Re: Random Monday Poll
Yes, and I've had to use that knowledge four times in the 20 years I've been driving.
My last car was the biggest PITA. There was a locking lugnut to prevent theft and I always forgot about it. The last time we tried to change it, we couldn't get the lugnuts off. I had to drive it to the garage completely flat.
Now we have roadside assistance with the new car and when that's over, I will be signing up for AAA. I know how, but having the strength to get lugnuts off that a power tool put on is a different story!

Re: Random Monday Poll
I chose "other" because while I know the steps, I've never done it, so I don't actually know if I can change a tire.

So when I was growing up and about to get my driver's license, my dad told me that I wasn't allowed to drive his cars until I learned how to change a tire. I have had to change my own flat tires twice in my life since then and I have to tell you that it makes me feel really self-sufficient.
I was taught the same thing and feel the same way! I have had to change my tire twice and was proud when I finished!

Re: Random Monday Poll
I have a funny story about that (okay funny now that its over). I had a tire blow out while I was on the highway, and seriously...it could have been a lot worse had I not just been getting on so I was still in the right lane...I pulled off the highway onto the shoulder and I KNEW that there was a spare in the trunk, I just didn't know if there was a jack or what to do with it...I didn't have AAA at the time yet and I was a single lady. I called every guy I knew and noone could help me. an off duty AAA tow truck driver pulled over on the side of the road and said he felt bad for me, cause I was screaming into my phone, so he helped me for free. Nice guy. The funny thing was since i didn't know where the jack was, I guess I was holding the handle for the jack in my hand and screaming into the phone "WHAT DOES THIS THING EVEN DO" and the man came up and smiled at me and said "that's what's gonna help me put your tire on." OH WELL!!

Re: Random Monday Poll
Back in the 70s-80s growing up we used to put "snow tires" on the car in the winter, so i always helped my Dad do that as well as routine maintenance...i can change tires, oil, hoses, spark plugs etc...basic simple maintenance.

Re: Random Monday Poll
change a tire, oil, bleed brakes, wipers, wrap a hose..done it all.
Then I started buying new cars and the only thing I would do on it now is change a tire.
