Question for those with finished basements
Do you have heat down there? We are in the process of refinishing our basement and we are up in the air about heat. Originally we were going with electric heat (look like baseboards), now he is kicking around the idea of actual plumbing baseboards. I just hate that any heating system will take up wall space that I would love to have.
Do we really need heat down there?
ETA: we are not putting a rug (just area rug). We will likely have ceramic tile b/c we have gotten water (we have since had a perimeter drain put in but don't want to take a chance) so that may make it a little colder.
Thanks!

Re: Question for those with finished basements
I have a finished basement with baseboard (plumbing heat) We didn't finish the basement (the previous owners did) but if I had my choice I would do radiant heat. It is more efficient and it doesn't take any space up with radiators.
ETA - you will definitely need some type of heat source down there otherwise it will be too cold in the winter.

Re: Question for those with finished basements
We have baseboard heat. I definitely think you need it. Most of our basement is carpeted except the laundry room Which has tile and it can get chilly down there.

Re: Question for those with finished basements
We have forced hot air heat with two vents in the finished part of the basement. The unfinished parts of the basement get so cold I couldn't imagine hanging out down there with no heat.

Re: Question for those with finished basements
We have steam heat but instead of baseboards, we have two fixtures with vents on the front that are flush with the wall. (not sure what they are called and DH isn't home for me to ask.) The basement came with it, and we decided not to change it. It works pretty well. We closed off the workshop/oil tank room and laundry room part of the basement and those rooms are very noticeably colder.

Electric heat. It definitely needs it. I don't even have a completely in ground basement and it's freezing!

Re: Question for those with finished basements
We just put heat in (plumbing with baseboards). We have a carpeted basement and even on days like today where it is 40 degrees outside, the basement is only 63-64 so it can get really chilly down there when it is really cold out.

That's what we are deciding between now, electric heat or real baseboards. Does the electric heat get expensive? We were thinking baseboards would cost more now to put in but may be cheaper in the long run. Also, can you put any furniture against the electric? I know they don't get too hot to the touch. In my old apt I had a small room and all of my furniture was against the baseboards...not sure if that works with electric baseboards . FM if you'd rather :)

Radiant heat is in the floors when you lay the mud down for the tile, you puts tubes down and lay the floor on top of the tubes. I believe the tubes use hot water running thru them to generate the heat. So no more cold tile floor.

Re: Question for those with finished basements
At about 4 feet underground, the temperature is a pretty steady 50-55 degrees, so that's roughly the average temp of a basement. Nothing will freeze in the basement, but I wouldn't want to hang out in 55 degrees for too long most of the time.

Re: Question for those with finished basements
We have baseboard with wall to wall berber and honestly between the laundry room and boiler room it seems so warm down there we rarely if ever put the heat on...
