Question about counting and ABC's
DD is almost 23 months and doesn't know her ABC's or 123's. It seems like most of your DC can do this at her age.
If I sing the ABC's she will say certain letters and counting well we JUST got her to count to 2
ETA: She can do an alphabet puzzle and says "Apple" when she does the "A", "Baby" for B, "Carrot" for C, "Dad" for D, etc. So she can associate a word for almost any letter, but she doesn't say A, B, C, D, etc.
Is she really behind? She knows a few colors, but that's really about it. She understands everything I say, and says ALOT of words and short sentences.
Not reallly worried, just curious.

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
It will come!
I know you are not worried, but for us it feels like it happened overnight. That leapfrog fridge phonics really helped my DD. I know for a fact that's what helped her with the recognition. As for the letter sounds, she watched one Leapfrog DVD, and she knew all of the sounds. So I have Leapfrog to thank . I also would just point out letters wherever we would go, just like look at the :"A"...etc I would just keep doing what you are doing, she is probaly taking it all in and will surprise you one day with all she knows!

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
we are in the same boat.
Since LEo did not know a single song to this boy, it was ABC's over and over again...you would think Josh would be singing it in his sleep...
but no.
He likes the idea of counting...holds up fingers and makes sounds as though he is, but that's it.
it helps so much that I am in a 18-23 month old class at the library. I see what all the others are doing...there is only a handful of them who are really verbal

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
I think Lily's on just about the same level, so if Hannah's behind, then so is Lily. She'll do some counting, but messes up the order most of the time. Colors, she's ok on sometimes. ABCs, she'll sorta sing the song with me, but we need to work on matching letters with objects. Lily is also pretty verbal, but doesn't do too many sentences. I'm not really worried. We'll see what the ped. says at her 2 year appt. When she's at her playgroup with the other little girls around her age, she's just like them. I think Lily may even be a little more "advanced" than they are.

Same level for sure... I actually noticed she JUST started becoming a little more verbal putting 3 words together. I think you will see more within the next few months...well thats what I hear.

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
That sounds right on target for that age...
Reciting the abcs and numbers are pure memorization at that age...(that's why so many kids at that age think lmnop is one letter!) It's really a song....
An "a" for apple at that age is good - There really is no "a-ness" to it - it doesn't represent a sound to them yet - it's just a letter that they recognize, like a shape or color.
All the rest comes in time...

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
Matthew is 21 months and know MOST of his letters, all his colors and most shapes and can count to 20, and knows the ABC song, but that was with CONSTANT singing of songs, or counting. It is memorization, and it will come

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
DS is 21 months and counts to 20, knows the entire alphabet, sings the abc's, kows all the colors, shapes and can count baclwards from 10-1. He also knows all the animals including dinosaurs. My mother watches DS and she would constantly do all of the above with him all day long. My son also loves puzzles and we noticed early on that he has a great memory. You say something once to my son or show him something and he wont forget it. I also have Noggin to thank. If one toddler is doing certain things and your DD isnt, that doesn't make her behind. Each child goes at his/her own pace and they eventually catch up.

Re: Question about counting and ABC's
Luca will be 2 this weekend and can sing the whole abc song, but I don't think he really has any clue about one letter from another. He certainly can't look at a letter and tell me which one it is. He can count pretty well, into the teens- but only when he feels like it. As for colors, , I swear there's a possibility this kid is color blind. He takes random guesses, once in a while he's right, but most times he's wrong. He's getting pretty good at recognizing shapes, or at least a few of them.
