i think i will be much more of an organized, somewhat strict parent with high expectations for our children...I am a teacher and this my attitude with my students. I think in many ways it will carry over. Of course having fun and lots of love too!! I think DH is def. going to be a BIG softy, especially if we have girls.

Re: QOTD 1/14/11

I also work w/kids but as a guidance counselor. I *think* (of course who knows how I will REALLY be until it happens Chat Icon ) I will be somewhat laid back.

I WILL have high academic expectations, but I also want my children to flourish socially and emotionally. I think in my line of work I have seen all to frequently kids who are pushed too hard academically. My children will be expected to do their personal best--but not every kid CAN get a 100 in math, kwim? I also want them to have good social skills and self awareness bc this can carry you as far if not further in life then the 100 in math.

An 85 student who can talk to people and is socially competent is ALWAYS at an advantage over a kid who is just book smart.

DH on the other hand will be the hardass w/grades Chat Icon you need a balance!

ETA: I had to run to a meeting...

Where behavior/manners/etiquette is concerned I will not be laid back. Fresh behavior is not something I tolerate well w/my students so I can only imagine how I will react when my kids do it Chat Icon

Re: QOTD 1/14/11

soo weird you posted this Q.. I just read an article on CNN titled Chinese Moms and Western Moms!! It was saying how Chinese moms are more rigid and Western moms are more lax about their children.. blah blah blah..

But made me wonder.. I'm not Chinese, but I was raised in house with strict parents and I always promised myself to be a "cool" mom. But I think I would be a strict parent.. studies will be the #1 priority and I would place a lot of emphasis on speaking our native languages. I totally believe in the mantra of being your child's best friend but not to lose sight of who's the boss. Who knows, maybe I'll be the biggest pushover mom and I'm just talking out of my (_I_) Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: I think DH will be biggggg on manners.. I think he'll be discilpinarian.

a good one, i hope! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i think dh will be the disciplinarian because i feel i would be TOO strict, having grown up with very strict parents. i'm also mildly (ok really) neurotic.

Loving, supportive, fun, semi strict & laid back....all at the same time Chat Icon

DH will def be the funny, goof ball, loving and he will also be on the strict side.

We both plan to allow our DC to grow as individuals and not smother them BUT....we plan to be VERY involved in who is influencing their lives.

Re: QOTD 1/14/11

This question scares me. I have such a fear of passing on all my anxieties and stuff to my children. I would like to think I'll be a semi-strict parent. But, I want to raise my kids to be independent. My mom babied me sooooo much and I don't want to do the same thing.

Strict, but laxed. I certainly want to be the first one to explain the birds and the bees if you know what I mean. I won't sugar coat things and make up "stories" of why things are a certain way.

and there will certainly be no TV's in the bedrooms, that's for sure.

LOL.

LOL. I think the exact same thing. But, when my nephew gets out of hand my DH is all about consequences. I LOVE IT!

i think we will be laid back yet strict parents but the kind thats involved with everything..like coach of baseball team, brownie leadder etc

my goal is just raise happy healthy kids and try to give them all the things i never had and make sure they know we will always always be there for them no matter what

I'm a teacher. While DH and I are both laid back, I have a lots more patience than him. I sometimes worry b/c he doesn't handle stress well, where I'm fine with it usually.

Re: QOTD 1/14/11

A combination of strict and laid back. When DH and I are around our nephew and my SIL and see how she deals with him, we both look at each other as if to say, oh HELL NO will we parent like her and her DH.

I hope to be more laid back than my parents and more strict that my IL's.

Re: QOTD 1/14/11

I am strangely conservative about some things and COMPLETELY laid back about others.

I see children walking in the mall, and EVERYtime I say stuff like "Oh, my child will not be out wearing THAT!" (And yes, I fully understand that most of them change when they get to the mall).

And the way kids talk to their parents these days...

So, I'll be all about manners and stuff. But I don't stress over breaking stuff in the house, or things like that.
