if you are a nurse and are going to work in a hospital i seriously doubt you will lose your job because of a pregnancy. On my unit, they hire woman all the time that are halfway thru their pregnancy when they start. don't be discouraged. Chat Icon

THANK YOU that is so comforting! i really love what i do and really need to work. im mainly looking at the nursing homes.

Gotcha- so how does those who get fired for pregnancy even have a case...

Why did I think this was illegal...

I mean- Ive been at my job for 18 months. I was the 1st employee, there before the school even opened.

When I tell my boss, she can decide that she no longer wants me working there, and thats it???

I have all HIGH scores on my performance reviews, and have rec'd several raises to the highest percentage given.

As far as I know- at my job we dont NEED a reason to fire you either...Chat Icon

Since you've been there longer, you have more of a leg to stand on. It is illegal to discriminate for being pregnant, yes, plus you have good reviews to back yourself up. But in a situation where they don't have to give a reason (that my contract lays out for the first year), you can't really argue discrimination because it could be another reason, since they don't give a reason. And at that point there are no performance reviews.

I just took training on this today. It is a Federal law that you cannot be discriminatede against because you are pregnant so regardless what your companies'policy is or if the state is at will you are protected under federal law. Of course you'd probablly have to sue to get that done but either way it is a law

I work in a hospital and have seen women get pregnant not long after hire. They were never fired. There is a great need for nurses. Good luck!

Yes, but the problem is proving that you got fired because of pregnancy. They will give every other legitimate reason and never admit it was because of that. It is nearly impossible to prove, though there is a federal law to protect us.
