pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

I'm in my 3rd trimester now and of course that makes me start to wonder about things. I've heard many rumors about labor (like accidently pooping on the table while pushing. lol) But the one that has bugged me the most is your ATTIRE at the hospital.

I know they give you a hospital gown to wear (probably opens in the front for nursing, right?). But I've heard some women online saying that they had to do it all in the nude. Chat Icon

I asked around and the very few friends I have that have actually HAD babies have told me that that's silly and they wore a robe, but now i keep thinking about it. No way I would ever be ok with laying there butt naked. I'm ok with my bottom being exposed (of course - your pushing out a human being) but the boobies must stay concealed. lol.

Please shed some light since most of you have just recently gone through this

I wore a gown both times.

But honestly, when you're in labor, modesty goes out the window. You just won't care. And you probably will poop on the table and you won't even care. And if your boobs are out, so what. Your hoo haa will be exposed to the world! All the things you worry about when pregnant all work out when you're at the hospital. Best of luck to you!

I always had a gown ( opened in the back BTW) and within a few hours after delivery I got up and got dressed.

C-section may be different/more difficult though. Most other mom's walking around the halls were in the gowns with robes. That just wasn't for me and I felt good enough to get up and get dressed for my visitors so that was that.

Like pps said - modesty goes out the window though.

DS got mad at me in the beginning because I told the nurse our name suggestions - I was like 1) who's she going to tell and 2) I think we're going to get to know each other quite well today, the least I can do is tell her what name we were thinking (we didn't tell anyone).

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

I delivered at North Shore in Manhasset. I wore a gown and they gave me the option to wear my bra (opted not to), but to note that it will probably get dirty when they would lay DD on me.

I was really nervous about exposing myself and who would see me, but to be honest, once the contractions really kicked in...I was ready to run around naked to get someone to get her out! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had a c-section and was wearing a gown. I've never heard of giving birth buck naked, unless its something the woman wanted.

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

in childbirth class one of the videos we saw the women were naked and was like ***???

who knows..maybe that was a birthing center or something. but i definitely had a robe on. I was induced and sat in the hospital room for 14 hours. it was cold too at times and i was under a blankie.

i wouldnt worry too much about the clothing though. you'll be too busy worrying about other things :)

Gown here too. And after delivery, I wore two. One with opening in the back and another like a robe opening in front. I did have my own jammies but opted for the gowns. Until yer done with what goes on down there, I did not want to get my jammies "dirty". Chat Icon

Gown open in the back. The shoulders snap in case you wanted to nurse. They tried to cover what didn't need to be exposed.

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

Thanks for your responses!!! That definitely makes me feel better that you all delivered wearing the hospial gown. I am a very modest (and stubborn) person just in general, so I have a very strong feeling that no matter what's going on during labor I would STILL fight to keep covered. Like I said, I don't give a crap about the bottom half (lol) but anything else needs to be tucked away. So you all just took a load off. Thank you! Chat Icon

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

lol I'm so glad you asked this. As you know this is a huge fear of mine also! I'm glad to hear most of you ladies had robes on! I don't mind exposing the bottom, but everything!?!?! no thanks!

Don't worry about the delivery. Its easier than what you think... And yes... I wore a gown... Though most the time I was breastfeeding.

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

When I was being admitted, I was told to change into the gown they gave me, naked underneath. I was having a section so when I was in the OR, they just yanked my gown up high enough for them to work and perform the surgery. After that, they covered me up and wheeled me to recovery. I spent the first day in the gown (but once they took the cath out, which didn't hurt at all, I put on underwear with chucks and pads) and for the rest of my time in the hosp. I wore my own PJs.

I answered on Pregnancy too but wanted to say Ihad a gown on that was open to the back. I remember I kept pulling it up between pushing b/c it was sliding down so I was exposed but then I would remember to fix it lol

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

I had an emergency c/s and a scheduled repeat c/s and wore a gown both times. At the hospital I delivered in you are not allowed to wear a bra for a c/s if it has metal in it.

If you do a water birth labor I could see why you would be naked. Like the other girls said, all modesty goes out the window. Just to prepare you now, even after you deliver, nurses will still want to look at your lady parts and if necessary c/s incision to see how they are healing after you give birth.

Re: pregnant girl crashing to ask a silly question

I just answered this on the poop thread on pregnancy Chat Icon

I wore a gown both times but during my first delivery I tried to take it off because I was tired and hot and it was bothering me. My mother didn't let me.

I have one girlfriend who gave birth to her second child naked. I don't remember why... I think because she had a midwife and changed positions and it probably fell off and she didn't bother putting it back.

But you definitely don't HAVE to be naked, nor is encouraged as far as I'm aware.
