I loathe pretty much anything impractical...especially if it takes up a lot of space.
I have the Tiffany silver spoon and the tiffany piggy bank. Since they were from my SIL's I couldn't return them so I have them on a shelf in my china cabinet.
It is mostly them who buy me this stuff and I CAN'T return the stuff because they'll know. I swear they do it just to make me crazy. I'm convinced of it actaully.

Something that is "impractical" but thoughtful or I wouldn't buy it because it was expensive, I don't mind so much

same with me.. I am neurotic when it comes to clutter & I make it known that I don't care for impractical gifts but yet we still receive.

Tiffany will take back their stuff without a receipt Maybe only store credit but you can use it for yourself or gifts

Have you met my MIL?  She is the queen of crap. I either give it away, sell it, or if it is a keepsake, put it in a bin.
Ha ha....mine also. My SIL gives one of these to each of my kids when they are born....personally I find them creepty. I'm not keeping all their baby teeth in some bizarro tooth shrine.
I appreciate the thought, but its still a bit odd!

Honestly, I appreciate that someone cared enough about my child to get him a gift. At least they tried to get something that they thought was nice.

Before I had a baby, I think I gave impractical gifts all the time.
Now that I have a child, I absolutely hate impractical gifts. I say you should exchange it and use the credit towards something nice for yourself!

i am into very practical things but i also like traditional gifts for things like christenings & milestone birthdays. I wouldnt mind a silver spoon from tiffanys for a baptism- for any other occasion, id think they are nuts. DD has a shelf in her bedroom with her keepsake gifts from when she was a baby.

stuffed animals are my arched nemesis'.
As we speak I'm waiting for my sister (childless) to bring over the "stuffed" mermaid and stuffed seahorse that she got for DD. I will add this to the 4foot giraffe she got her last christmas. 
I TOTALLY agree. I hate hate hate those dust collecting useless stuffed animals. Thankfully DS isn't in to them either, although there are a select few that I haven't gotten rid of and he sleeps with them on his bed. I had to give MIL and FIL strict orders NO STUFFED ANIMALS because they were buying them faster than I could donate them.
Eta: to answer your original question I don't like impractical gifts and have no problem returning them or giving them away.

Hate, that's why I never give them. Things like baptisms and communions, etc...always give cash. Never needs a gift receipt and one size fits all. Birthdays I ask the mom what she wants/needs for the baby and if I'm not close enough with them to do that, I always attach a gift receipt.

Small and impractical doesn't really bother me. Large and impractical is another story completely.
I have no problem returning anything I cannot or will not use - or giving them away to someone who will use them.
