to each his own... but IMO, if gays can't get married, then polygamy should stay illegal. Why make one legal and not the other.
but see thats what i dont get. why the federal government feels its okay to dictate to people how to live their lives. i think any kind of love is beautiful and should be celebrated and not hidden.
i agree - unless, of course, the *love* is the kind of love referred to by "NAMBLA".
TRUE! there i agree!!!!
but i'm talking about consenting adults who have the means to provide for their children and have real jobs and are part of "normal" society. kind of like what you see on Big Love. i dont see anything wrong with THAT lifestyle.
exactly, and like barb said, anyone over 18 should be allowed to marry whoever they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone else.

I also think it raises a lot of questions with government assistance. I have seen stories where the family has around 20 kids and they are collecting a lot of money from the govt. because the parents aren't supporting the family.
I wish I were home, I am FASCINATED with this topic.
That's very prevalent in the Hasidic community. They are divorced legally but not in a religious sense. The wives are often on welfare, collecting government assistance for multiple children.

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
Do you think I could get one of these "wives" just to come over and cook and clean........... If then I'm all for it.
However, in all seriousness I don't see anything wrong with it IF THEY ALL CONSENT TO IT. I agree with Barb that it should be only people who are old enough/legal to decide that its what they want.
Any abuse of a woman/child/man or whomever isn't right in any type of relationship. I think these people need to thing long and hard before they commit to it just like any single married person.

im watching oprah and they have polygamist families.
for me, i could honestly care less. i dont see why its illegal. if this is how they wanna live then let them. to each their own. do you have strong feelings about this? if so, why are you so against it?
ETA: i would NEVER do it. i just want to know why people are so against other people living their lives the way that they want to and why the federal government feels the need to regulate this lifestyle. I agree, but a lot of women became imprisoned in the polygamist colonies. I think that is why the gov't stepped in. I still think live & let live, as long as no one is getting hurt.

I think if it's consenting adults...to each their own. But I think the govt gets involved because some force their young daughters to marry these men.

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
I think people are mixing up the concept of polygamy with the current societies that try to practice it. There is coerced, underage marrying in every circle of society. Underage marriage, brain-washing, marrying to avoid the term "rape" is wrong, no matter how many people are involved.
Polygamy in it's purest form has some benefits. Several women to take turns caring for the kids. Plenty of help with cooking, cleaning, shopping, dealing with DH.... etc.
How many of you would like to be able to say "Uh, Wife #3, watch the kids while I soak in the tub for an hour"... "Wife #4, could you cook dinner tonight, I'm exhausted" ...

DH is actually married to at least 10 different women. They all happen to occupy my body. Depending on the day, he can get anyone of them.

i agree, to each it's own.
it doesn't affect me, it's not for me but if that lifestyle makes them happy, then more power to them.
