Polygamy...yay or nay?
im watching oprah and they have polygamist families.
for me, i could honestly care less. i dont see why its illegal. if this is how they wanna live then let them. to each their own. do you have strong feelings about this? if so, why are you so against it?
ETA: i would NEVER do it. i just want to know why people are so against other people living their lives the way that they want to and why the federal government feels the need to regulate this lifestyle.

i agree, to each it's own.
it doesn't affect me, it's not for me but if that lifestyle makes them happy, then more power to them.

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
IMO i think it's gross, but as long as they are held accountable by the IRS (ie. whether or not they should be able to claim more than one wife as a dependant) i couldn't care less how many people a guy marries.
but notice how you never hear stories about female polygamists - i wonder if it's because women know better than that?

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
My biggest issue with polygamy is when young children or minors (even of the legal age) get involved- and from what I read, many wives of polygamists marry around 16, 17.
It can also be a way to cover up rape. In many parts of the country, a husband is legally incapable of raping his wife. Any sex between a husband and a wife is deemed consensual by the law.
Consenting, mature adults- I don't care. But as someone else said, not in my house.

to each his own... but IMO, if gays can't get married, then polygamy should stay illegal. Why make one legal and not the other.

Does Hugh Hefner count as a polygamist? If so, he rocks! I don't care how many wives or husbands someone has. To each their own.

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
Well it seems from what I've read/heard Polygamist marriages are not always consensual. Sometime girls as young as 14 are married to much older men. It is a patriarchal society and there is an element of brainwashing. Also the societies are very closed off so there is no access for government(without seriious cause) to investigate what is going on. So I do disagree-it should not be illegal with consenting adults but that is not always the case.

As long as they aren't dependent on anyone to help feed, cloth, or provide shelter - to each their own.

but see thats what i dont get. why the federal government feels its okay to dictate to people how to live their lives. i think any kind of love is beautiful and should be celebrated and not hidden.

Re: Polygamy...yay or nay?
That's a tough one. Most stories I've heard of Polygamy involve rape and incest so it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. On the other hand, if they are consenting adults, why not.

TRUE! there i agree!!!!
but i'm talking about consenting adults who have the means to provide for their children and have real jobs and are part of "normal" society. kind of like what you see on Big Love. i dont see anything wrong with THAT lifestyle.

I agree with this.
I also think it raises a lot of questions with government assistance. I have seen stories where the family has around 20 kids and they are collecting a lot of money from the govt. because the parents aren't supporting the family.
I wish I were home, I am FASCINATED with this topic.

Well said. There are a lot of problems inherent in polygamous communities that I take issue with, involving minors, the use of coercion and/or force, etc., but in a case where everyone involved is happy with the situation and they are self-supporting, it doesn't bother me. I would never want to be in a relationship like that, but if it works for them, I won't judge.

I was just thining the same thing
As long as it is consenting ADULTS, I think anyone should be allowed to marry as many times as they wish as long as they're willing to be financially responsible towards each other.
By adults I mean 18 & older. I don't think under 18 should be allowed to marry even with the consent of the parents because in the case of polygamists, the parents are often on board with their religion & I don't think a 16 year old is rational enough.
