He is at our regular vet's office with an IV and being monitored ( waiting for dye test and sonogram ).

Are you also saying that you think we should get the surgery?

I'm really relieved, I was confused and thought he might be at home.

They're going to be taking his temperature to make sure he doesn't have an infection, keeping him hydrated, doing blood tests, watching for gastric distention, vomiting and defecating. So I think that is the best place for him. And although you know it's upsetting for him, you have to hurt him to help him too. Chat Icon

But none of us here are experts so I'm always going to defer to the vet. I can't really say what you should do because I don't know everything they said. I'm sure they probably presented you with two schools of thought - if it is a blockage or not. If he kept food down, he should be having a bowel movement soon, which will give more clues to his current state.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the phone to ask more questions. If you want to know what signs they're looking for to prove or disprove a blockage, what the dangers of waiting are, etc. Judgment calls can be so hard and a lot of people ask a vet what they would do if it was their dog. It sounds like he already told you that answer. From here, I would get the best information I could and err on the side of caution but I'm a really conservative person and tend to play it extremely safe with everything I do. I realize it's not my place to say. So I'm just telling you that I am sending you both positive thoughts and prayers for his recovery. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: when is the dye test being done? That's the barium test, right?

Thank you for writing. I was never a "dog person" before brutus, never really had pets or anything so this is all new to me - so i appreciate advice from seasoned animal owners.

I am not sure what the dye test is called. Because of crazy timing this weekend I have not been available to go to the vet at all with DH. The dye test is today we have to call at 4PM for results, sonogram is tomorrow at noon.

Tilde - I promise I'm not trying to scare you at all... but with one of my parents puppies... he was 6 months old and out of nowhere starting vomiting and having diarrhea.

We took him to the vet and he stayed there for the night being watched... we ended up getting a call the next night that he had passed. It was all VERY quick and we hardly even had time to react.

They said it was an "adynamic ileus" which I think is basically an obstruction of the intestines... they didn't even have time to do all of the diagnostic testing on him - I think because he was so small.. it just happened very quickly.

Again, I don't mean to scare you - but obstructions can be VERY serious... I would definitely try to call the doctor and see what they can do right now because I think that time is an issue here - KWIM?

In the end, we opted not to have an autopsy done because we didn't want to find out what caused the obstruction this way none of us would blame ourselves if it was because he ate something of ours - KWIM?

--

On another note... my dog (who was from the same litter as the previously mentioned puppy) started having similar symptoms soon after... and she ended up staying in the hospital for 2 days and then came home and is now 5 years old and (almost) perfectly healthy!

Thank you for sharing your experiences, that must have been difficult to write about!

I called DH twice to express my concerns. While he understands them he is assuring me that he went over all possibilities with the vet and he feels confident in his decision to wait for the diagnostic testing to be done. All we can do at this point is pray. And I appreciate all of your prayers!! Chat Icon

I am glad that he can sleep home but it has been tough - I covered the bed with towels and let him sleep with us ( Okay I know that is gross but I dont want him to think that he is punished ) and I am up staring at him more than I am sleeping.

Thank you everyone for your hugs and prayers. They canceled the dye test today, I am not sure why but they are really focused on the sonogram for tomorrow.

DH went to visit him and said he was jumping on him and licking him and doing great - but it was heartbreaking to put him back in the cage and leave him again. I am going to go visit him tomorrow - I dont know how I am going to make it.

Thank you everyone and I have to ask that you keep praying as we are still in the dark about what is causing all of this. I don't know what I would do without all of you - I can't talk "out loud" about this at work because I will go into hysterics.

I called the vet to check on him and was told they don't release information before the doctor gets in Chat Icon Dh called moments later and we found out that he was sleeping on the blanket we brought him. So I am happy he seems to be comfortable.

I hope the fact that they didn't do the dye test means they're confident he's coming out of the woods. When is the sono?

Re: Please pray for Brutus! update in first post.

I will be thinking of him! One of my cats had an obstruction... well, let me re-phrase that... she ate a rubber glove, a whole yellow rubber glove. So she had the surgery to remove it. It's hard to know the right thing to do in a situation where you don't know what's causing it. I have had 2 different cats in 2 different times for unexplained vomiting and I always think WHY can't vet tests be better??? Why do I never know what's causing the problem?? I hope Brutus is home with you soon!! Chat Icon
