Please pray for Brutus! WE ARE HOME!!!!!! 11/11 update :)

hEYYYYY! So, Brutus is doing good! I got no sleep because I woke up at every little noise he made LOL we are just anxiously waiting for him to poop! Never thought I would spend my days wishing a dog would poop! He is eating okay. We have to figure out a better way to give him his pills - he is SO smart he works it out of everything we hide them in LOL

Thanks you guys!!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WE ARE HOME! All the girls loved Brutus and came out to say goodbye to him! I was such a proud mama. He peed for like 20 minutes the second he got out of there LOL and he already ate a little bit of food and is begging for more!

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are not out of the woods yet, I pray that we have an easy night and he can stay with us!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

11/10 UPDATE:

Brutus is coming home at 6PM! They dont know what it was but he is doing okay now and they want to send him home b/c he won't eat or drink there -- he does not eat or dink if DH is not there, sometimes even if I am there and DH isnt! He is so spoiled! So, anyway we have to keep an eye on him and bring him back if we see ANYTHING strange

I am so happy - when I caught a glimpse of him through the door -I burst into tears in the middle of the waiting room, we didnt even get to see him but we are going back soon - this is going to be the longest hour in history!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all of your love, prayers and support!!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++11/09 UPDATE: The vet said he is doing worse today so we HAVE to leave him overnight. He is going to be so scared. He is going to think we are never coming back. I am so sad.

DH just called me. The vet said that if Brutus was his dog he would have him in surgery TODAY. But we opted to wait for the dye test and the sonogram. If he has surgery now it will be pushed to Wednesday. I am just praying to God that we made the right choice.

*****************************

Two thursdays ago Brutus started vomitting. The vet found nothing wrong but on Saturday he passed a large piece of toy and then was fine for about a week.

Yesterday, he threw up over 15x, all phlegm and later on tinged with blood. He would not eat or drink. We took him to the hospital where they took xrays, gave him a shot of pepcid and put water under his skin. Last night and this morning he kept throwing up water mostly. He spent most of the day with an IV at our regular vet's office to hydrate him. Tomorrow he has a dye test and then if that shows nothing he is getting a sonogram on Tuesday.

I am beside myself. I don't know what to do and my heart hurts so much. Thinking of leaving him at the vet all alone - he must have been so scared and we have to do it for two more days. I am glad that he can sleep home but it has been tough - I covered the bed with towels and let him sleep with us ( Okay I know that is gross but I dont want him to think that he is punished ) and I am up staring at him more than I am sleeping.

Sorry this is so long. I have so much faith in God and I really do believe in the power of prayer so please pray for my Brutus. He is the best dog in the whole world and I just want to have this nightmare over!

Re: Please pray for Brutus!

OMG. I will Chat Icon. That doesn't sound gross, I would do the same thing. I wouldn't care if he vomited ON me, I would not want my dog to be alone or feel alone. I would want him right next to me.

I will Chat Icon that he is ok. The toy he threw up, it was his? Do you know where the rest of it is?

Re: Please pray for Brutus!

I'm so sorry Brutus isn't doing well! It sounds like they have him on a good plan, and those two tests should tell you what's going on and if there is an obstruction. I don't think it's gross at all, I think it's testament to the love you have for him and I'm sure it gave him more comfort, being so close to you.

Be strong and trust in your vet's ability; we will be thinking good thoughts for you and Brutus. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I did not recognize the toy, I can't find ANYTHING that he could have eaten that could cause this. However, a fellow LIFer explained that it could just be an accumulation of small pieces of toy over the years.

Brutus was able to eat three spoonfulls of chicken and rice yesterday AND took a pepcid AC - he kept both down all night, so that is a positive sign!

Re: Please pray for Brutus!

I'm very glad he's keeping food down... Now for it to come out the other side... Chat Icon

I read a book last week written by a vet and they said that foreign objects can remain in the stomach for long periods of time before being purged one way or another. Scary thought, but like you said it could provide an explanation for you on where it came from!

I hope he has a good BM soon and starts feeling better! Chat Icon

You definitely have to leave him, so they can hydrate him with an iv, etc. What is your main hesitancy about doing surgery, over the dye test? Are you afraid of the surgery or is it the cost? when is the dye test and sonogram? How quickly can that get done? If he has a blockage, maybe time is of the essence? I just want to help you, I know it's a lot to think about.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I responded to your FM, thank you for taking the time to post.

Money is not an issue - the vet made DH feel confident in his decision to delay the surgery. I did not realize that the plan would change so much today - that is why I did not go. I wish I could have but now I don't want to make DH feel even worse about his decision.

Re: Please pray for Brutus! update in first post.

Does anyone know if these symptoms are classic of leptospirosis? Was he vaccinated? I think he has some symptoms and I would think the vet would have looked into this. I ask this because I know my vet told me with lepto they would get very very sick, vomiting, etc. and I recall on here someones dog was just recently so sick with lepto, so thats why it comes to my mind.

What about pancreatitis? I dont recall if you said his blood came back normal or not. I am just trying to think, but I am sure your vet would have covered this. I want to help you so badly...I feel so bad for you and Brutus.

they did blood work at the hospital but they are doing a full blood work up today and they are checking the pancreas - he said that could possibly be the source of the problem IF there is no obstruction.

No one has mentioned lepto yet - I will call when I get home, I had enough crying at work today

Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time out to talk with me about this.

Please please ask about Lepto. My vet told me they would get violently ill with vomiting, etc from Lepto and for some reason I feel we all discussed on here that many vets don't think much of Lepto...for some reason. Also pancreatitis can make a pet very very ill with vomiting, etc.

If it's not an obstruction (the toy bit could be merely a coincidence) it possibly could be one of the above. Please let us know how it goes. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Please pray for Brutus! update in first post.

I recently switched vets because I wanted to feel like I could 100% trust in their medical expertise and opinion, and that they had the well being of my dog in mind. Although it hasn't been tested much yet, I would absolutely defer to their opinion since they have vast amounts of knowledge I don't.

Finding out if he had the Lepto vaccine is always a good idea, but I know of at least one circumstance where a dog had the vaccine and was still affected by it anyway.

I'm confused about the updates though - where is Brutus now? Is he at the vet's office, being monitored?

He is at our regular vet's office with an IV and being monitored ( waiting for dye test and sonogram ).

Are you also saying that you think we should get the surgery?

I'm really relieved, I was confused and thought he might be at home.

They're going to be taking his temperature to make sure he doesn't have an infection, keeping him hydrated, doing blood tests, watching for gastric distention, vomiting and defecating. So I think that is the best place for him. And although you know it's upsetting for him, you have to hurt him to help him too. Chat Icon

But none of us here are experts so I'm always going to defer to the vet. I can't really say what you should do because I don't know everything they said. I'm sure they probably presented you with two schools of thought - if it is a blockage or not. If he kept food down, he should be having a bowel movement soon, which will give more clues to his current state.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the phone to ask more questions. If you want to know what signs they're looking for to prove or disprove a blockage, what the dangers of waiting are, etc. Judgment calls can be so hard and a lot of people ask a vet what they would do if it was their dog. It sounds like he already told you that answer. From here, I would get the best information I could and err on the side of caution but I'm a really conservative person and tend to play it extremely safe with everything I do. I realize it's not my place to say. So I'm just telling you that I am sending you both positive thoughts and prayers for his recovery. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: when is the dye test being done? That's the barium test, right?
