Please explain the hype about the Smart car
Out of curiosity, I looked at the Smart car. Everybody "raves" about this green car.
BUT I am completely lost. The revised EPA gas mileage is about the same as any small car (Corolla, Mini, etc..)
Those cars are $$$. About $14K+ when you start adding up things.
What did I miss? What is the advance to such car?
All I can see so far is that for the same gas mileage and price, I can get any other car on the market that is actually a 4/5 seater.
Please enlighten me!!!!!

Re: Please explain the hype about the Smart car
I dont like it.. i just see "death trap" when i look at it. Its great to be green and yeah im sure you save money on gas.. but its smaller than a golf cart!! With people driving around in these Huge SUVs.. i just wouldnt feel safe in that.

Re: Please explain the hype about the Smart car
If I lived in the city I think it would be great - so small for getting into tight parking spots. Living in the suburbs it seems a bit scary to be driving that on highways and stuff. I think it is meant for city driving.

I know but we have the mini, the fit, etc... Those fit 4 people and have about the same gas mileage and about the same price.
I was just expecting to see so much more than that. I was disappointed.

Re: Please explain the hype about the Smart car
I saw it in Germany/France 6 years ago..the hype in Europe is that it is small and in the crowded cities (Paris, Frankfurt), you can park it practically anywhere.
Unless you live in the city here, I don't get the hype about it either.

ITA- I don't care what any of their so called safety stats say- no WAY is that thing safe in an accident. No way. If you are hit hard by an SUV or even another full size car- I can't see that thing holding up.... Saving a few bucks on gas is NOT worth my safety. Sorry....

ITA. There are a few of them around my way and you couldn't pay me to drive around in that.....especially on the highway. To me they look almost the same size as those toy cars they sell in TRU for the kids.
I much rather a Prius, Civic Hybrid or Corolla.

Without considering the safety issue, I just wonder what are the advantages to this car vs what is already on the market.

It's very small and light making it more fuel efficient. For people who live in cities, it alleviates some parking issues - you can park a Smart car perpendicular to the curb and it's length is pretty much the same as the width of a full-size car.

Those points make sense. I think for me I would go with a Prius first out of comfort and room.

Actually it is NOT more fuel efficient.
This is from their actual website regarding gas mileage (not sure if manual or automatic):
The smart fortwo is designed to achieve 33 city/41 highway mpg according to 2008 EPA standards, which involves measuring mpg while taking into account real-life driving conditions such as start/stop city traffic, air-conditioning, heating etc. According to information obtained on fueleconomy.gov, the smart fortwo is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline-powered vehicle in the USA today. The gas tank of the smart fortwo is 8.7 gallons
MINI (automatic): City: 26 Hwy:34
TOYOTA
Corolla: City: 27 Hwy: 35
Yaris: City: 29 Hwy: 35
They are very comparable in $$ and gas. Yet, it's really just a 2 seater.
So I guess it's about parking!

By what you just posted, it IS better fuel economy than the rest, no? We have one here at work, it's OK, I would never own one myself. We have it for advertising purposes, which definitely works for us. My boss has been tracking the mileage, we never take it on the parkway, it's getting closer to 45 mpg.

Yes but it's very close and they all are 4+ seats.
I am all for green and was disappointed in such little difference for the price of the car and number of passengers.
I expected the "Green" car to be so much more efficient that normal cars already on the market.

I think this is the difference - it's not a hybrid, it's gasoline powered.
There's not much difference in the cars that you've posted here, but it is more fuel efficient.

All the car I posted are non hybrid also.
What I am saying is that for almost the same price and "almost" the same gas mileage, you have have a bigger car that is much more practical.
I was expecting a lot more of a difference in gas mileage.

Re: Please explain the hype about the Smart car
News flash, you big SUVs can be a death trap also..Just because you are bigger, higher, doesn't mean you aren't going to get hurt and/or killed.
as for those that say it’s only a 2 seater vs. a 4 seater... some don't live they live with kids or heck, even partners so why would a 4 seat car be needed in that situation? I drive a 2 seater car for almost 8 years and it has served me perfectly.
as far as efficiency the smart car is made of recycled parts and offers good gas mileage...
This car is not for everybody.

This car is not for everybody.
You don't need to attack everyone with a big SUV.
I actually was asking for reasons to like this car.
I could not a reason just based on gas mileage and price.
Just said it was made of recycled parts. Good to know!
I was trying to find WHY this car was "good".
