I not telling you to do this however many people don't tell their insurance company they have a put bull. It's total breed discrimination unfortunately.

I have heard of people doing this too but what happens if there's an incident with the dog?

If you don't tell the insurance company and the dog injures someone and you get sued, its very likely that your insurance company won't cover it.

This is not a good idea to do and I would not suggest it. Better to find a company that will insure you and pay a little extra to know that you won't be personally responsible god forbid something happens involving your dog. i have a dog, but its not a pitbull and was covered by my co - Naragansett Bay.

I agree. It’s a really bad idea not to tell them. I work for an insurance company in NJ. If something were to happen the Insurance Company can deny that claim, then most likely non renew your home policy. Then when you try to get new homeowners and there is records of the dogs biting history or whatever happened, it’s going to be much harder to find a company to write you and when you do, it will be extremely expensive. Also depending on how far the insurance company wants to push the issue you could also be hit with a fine for insurance fraud. In NJ the fine can be up to $5000.

I'm really am not sure what I am supposed to do - I have looked at close to 7 insurance companies and no one will write the policy. Am I supposed to just get rid of my dog? That's rediculous. There are 1000's of Pitbulls on LI - I can't be the only one having this issue. They won't even charge me more.

How do they even prove the dog is a pitbull?? Maybe she adopted it from a shelter and it was listed as a mutt?? What if it isn't a purebred?? Like I said I'm NOT telling her not to be honest but there are loopholes....

We found our dog in the road. She is a mutt to us and to our vet. She looks like a pit bull and most likely she is, but for insurance purposes she is a mutt. I even asked my vet about a DNA test and he said they don't work and aren't 100%. Unless you got your dog from a breeder, in my opinion, you can say they are mutts.

I have no advice....just wanted to say my dad once got dropped when the insurance company found out he had a Dalmatian!
Mind you she was 13yo and deaf at tat point, but even as a pup this was a dog who would lead you to the fine china if you just rubbed her behind te ear for a split second!
Not sure who my dad got after that, but good luck!

A Dalmatian!?! That is just so ridiculous. So I can't get home owners ins because of a dog I adopted? She is the sweetest thing too. The agent at state farm asked me if I had a vicious dog breed... I asked her what that is supposed to mean. My dog is being profiled!! I don't think I have much of choice in my decision.

I had a similar problem since my dog has a bite history- I used an insurance agent and she was able to get me a policy with Hull & Co. They will not cover my dog (no one will write a policy NYS to an owner covering a dog with a bite history or on the excluded breeds list). To cover my dog I will have to raise the limits on my car insurance which will make me eligible for a personal umbrella policy. A personal umbrella policy can provide up to 5 million in additional coverage god forbid my dog ever gets himself in trouble again.

I have two rotties so I know your pain. Statefarm covered me 7 years ago and I'm still with them, they didn't have an issue with them.

Most carriers will not insure, some will make you sign a statement excluding any sort of liability claim for the dog. If you need some help finding a carrier that will insure you, please feel free to contact me here or [email protected]. I can also be reached by phone at 631-650-4036.

There is a bill in Assembly right now that would prohibit insurers from using dog breed to determine coverage. I suggest contacting your rep and supporting this.

MrsG, have you tried Einhorn? http://einhorninsurance.com/california-insurance/new-york-dog-liability-insurance/

oh good to know i have been wondering how this is even legal or fair to deny just based on the breed.
Any breed could be vicious

They base this on statistics. I am actually in favor of this being passed because it's all about how you raise the dog. Unfortunatly it is what it is for now.
Metlife does not write home on Long Island, and Narr Bay will not write with that breed of dog.

Metlife was actually through my job and the only reason i didnt go with them is because Statefarm came in slightly cheaper

I wonder if some insurers are being proactive knowing that the no breed discrimination policy looks like it will pass?
