Re: Paying for a field trip?
yes you always have to pay.
you could decline the field trip, but then your kid may be the only one and hear what he missed as they'll talk about it after.
We just had a $20 field trip... dc came home with a little pumpkin, pony ride, and they had to order the bus.

My kids aren't in school yet but I would have thought they'd be covered by the school honestly. Don't feel silly for asking, I would have been a bit surprised too. What happens for kids who's parents just can't afford it?
Most of the time the teacher pays , some schools or PTAs have funds set up for that situation also.
What teachers do you know that would pay for every kids field trip??
When I was teaching I did NOT (EVER) pay for a kids field trip, that is NOT my responsibility. No teacher I knew was paying for her class either.
Sometimes the field trip was covered by the school, which was very rare OR the cost of the trip was to be paid by the parents which is most common. Very, very rarely have I come across a completely field trip because they usually at least need money to cover the buses that day.
As far as a parent not being able to afford it, the trips are never that expensive and most parents can afford the few bucks it costs............and I've taught in some pretty low income areas. If you can't afford you can just opt out of your child going. Field trips aren't mandatory.

Re: Paying for a field trip?
This is actually what stood out to me when I went to my first PTA meeting.
We are in a lower income district so that obviously trickles down onto the PTA.
I think they gave statistics like there are 30 families out of 1000 that really support the PTA.
I get it though....I feel like every time I turn around its something else to give money to.
As long as DS is getting a good education though I could care less. We take him places as does his other family so that's what counts. If they need to cut back on field trips, there are worse areas they could be making cuts IMO.

Really? Schools barely have enough money to buy school related supplies and maintain their arts programs, where would they be coming up with the money for field trips for hundreds of kids? In my town there are very affluent neighborhoods and there are lower income neighborhoods, but our schools are based on lottery so they are all diverse. We are always asked for money for field trips, ranging from $5-20. We have also been asked to send in extra money to help other families. And when I've volunteered to chaperone, I have paid AND had to drive myself.

Re: Paying for a field trip?
I wouldn't really think twice about paying for a trip since we came from a catholic school last year where they make you pay for everything :) But yeah, I have heard of teachers paying for things for their students. My co-worker's daughter teaches in a poor area. She has bought her students socks and gloves in the past. She brings muffins in for breakfast for those kids who don't eat. I don't doubt that she would pay for a child's field day trip.

Like I said, my kids aren't in school yet (unless you include daycare) so I have no experience with this. I don't know all of the politics and financial issues that exist. I would have (stupidly I guess) assumed that the tax dollars fund the field trips. They're usually to a museum or the zoo, not expensive places and I figure they would get a hefty discount.
This is all new to me, nothing I ever gave much thought to. I'm not saying I wouldn't be willing to pay for my child, just that I would have been a bit surprised the first time I was hit up for $$ to pay for a field trip.

The problem is with that, in low income areas, it's not generally just one kid you'd have to cover. Kids use to ask me all the time for school supplies, for snacks, for everything. I cannot be financially responsible for a class of 29 children.
I helped with certain things when I could but in my personal experience, some parents take advantage of that so as a teacher you have to be discriminating in what you will help with.
But in any case, a parent should be prepared to have to lay out money throughout the year. With my DD I've had to pay for T-shirts for Field Day, give money towards teacher gifts, pay for field trips and so on. It's not cheap having kids!

Paying for a field trip?
I have never heard of a teacher paying for a student to go on a trip. If they do, that is very nice of them but they should not have too. Any students that have financial hardships are paid through the social worker (school's have funds) and then the PTA if need be. That is for true hardship though, not just because the parents don't want to pay.
Technically, under PTA insurance laws, PTAs are not allowed to pay for transportation to anywhere. They also are not allowed to pay for field trips unless they offer the same to each grade in the school.
Our trips at school go from very cheap to expensive. DD is going somewhere next week for $3 but one of the older grades is going to the city to see a play and it's costing about $80.

$80? No way would I spend that for a field trip. Maybe as a planned family event but geez. For school? That's really lousy. Not everyone can just drop $80 for something like that.

Paying for a field trip?
I was surprised, too, by how many things need to be paid for, everything from pizza in the classroom to field trips, no matter what school my kids were in, public or private. While DH and I were able to pay for things, though not always happily, some kids families were not. I personally know parents who have a hard time sending in money for a slice of pizza, and mine is considered a rich district. The constant stream of requests for money is a hardship and an embarrassment for them.
The district does pay for some trips, but not all of them. It simply can't unless it raised our taxes, because it would have to cover every grade from Pre-K to 12. I haven't seen or heard of teachers paying for trips or supplies themselves, but I have seen a teacher pay a lot out of his pocket for one little spoiled brat's expensive lunch at a restaurant after the kid ordered an appetizer, costly entree, a few sides and drinks plus desert and didn't have enough to cover it. Everybody was told to bring $10 for lunch and were reminded that they had to stay within it. He wanted to show off to his table which was not near the teacher's, and did. The parents that saw him ordering lavishly assumed he had enough to cover it, but he didn't. OTOH, sometimes kids don't account for taxes on their meals and parents who are chaperoning have had to chip in to cover the extra. That can get expensive when a lot of kids mess up, which has happened.
It is my understanding from what teachers have told me that my district's budget will help cover certain field trips for kids it knows can't pay and it also supplies sandwich lunches for them. I have seen the lunches being brought aboard the busses. But, it can't cover every kid on every trip so that's where the PTA, teachers and parents pitch in to raise funds through soup nights, spaghetti nights, bake sales & yard sales, etc. I ran a once a week bagel & juice sale all year long to raise enough to send 5 kids on the trip to Washington DC as I couldn't bear the thought of some not being able to go because it was an expensive overnight trip.

Just wait until they get into the 5th grade, or 8th grade trips, and then High School. Our school used to do a Broadway Play for the 5th grade trip and it was something like $250 for a parent and child! Insane if you ask me!! They changed it when my son was in 5th to go to the Statue of Liberty and that was still a lot! Over $100!

I remember a handful of expensive trips but they were planned with plenty of notice so people could budget - we saw Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and took a weekend trip to DC, those were the big ones I could remember.
Some of the elaborate trips were done as part of an extracurricular club, so you only went if you were part of the club.

Ha. That isn't a trip that everyone takes. It is offered to the French club. I went to France in 11th grade and it was in lieu of a Sweet 16.

Re: Paying for a field trip?
We used to have to pay for field trips but recently our district is paying for the little ones (farms, museums, etc). I was told it had to do with a state law that a parent complained about.
But the big trips with the overnight stays, we are supposed to pay.

A parent actually complained about paying for their own child to take a trip??

You know how teachers give out the supply list - like 25 glue sticks, 10 packs of crayons, etc...my friend is in Sachem and she says she knows of parents who absolutely have the funds to provide the supplies but don't because they know others will. Totally taking advantage.
