Parents who push off the mmr shot??
Anyone freaking cause of all these measles outbreaks happening? I like to push the mmr shot as long as I can. I think I waited till my first son was just about 2 before he got it but now my younger son is just about to turn 1 so I know they will ask to give it now and I'm unsure what to do.
I hate this.. All talk about autism being a huge high now and this mmr shot and now measles outbreaks happening!!!
Anyone rushing to get the vaccine?

I held off until my twins were 3 and plan on giving It to DS when he turns 2. I asked DH his thoughts on giving it to him a little earlier because of the recent outbreak and he wants to wait until he is at least 2 which is on August. We originally planned on waiting until 3. I'm in no way concerned about the shot causing him to have Autism as there is nothing to prove that this vaccine causes autism. I just don't like the fact of giving those 3 vaccines together and wished they still separated them. It's the high fevers and fever seizures that I'm afraid of.

My ped waits until 2 to give the mmr shot to start. DS is almost 17 months and I'm going to wait it out, unless his ped says at his 18 month appt to give it to him.
And FYI - my DS has been diagnosed with autism before having this shot, and like luckysmom said, there is nothing that proves the shot "gives" the child autism.

Exactly. I wouldn't base your reasoning on this alone. We are delaying (for other reasons) and yes, I am a little concerned, but after researching I will still delay.

The shot does not cause autism. If you are worried about measles and autism, get the shot. I know countless unvaccinated kids with autism.

I know nothing has proven the shot causes autism and im not saying I think it does. I like to push all shots anyway and separate them at all times. But I won't say with hearing some things with autism and the shot it doesn't worry me a little. And there was a huge article how the amount of children being diagnosed with autism is like 1 in 65 I think and that is crazy. It has to be something, maybe what we eat/drink then give to kids. I mean what can be doing this so bad now? That's all I meant. My bigger concern was whether or not trying to get it sooner then what I normally would wait for which is 2, because of the measles outbreaks.

Measles is a much more immediate threat to your child's life. I would not delay the mmr.
There was an article in Jama just this past month stating autism stars well before birth- in the end I believe they will find it is a mix of genetic vulnerability and environmental factors. But at this time we don't know what those environmental factors are. I also think some of the increase is due to increased awareness and diagnosis- kids who may have been mildly autistic when we were younger wre just weird or loners.
The doctor who published the article on the mmr and autism was found to have falsified his data. He was sent to jail and had his medical liscence revoked. So although this fear has become port of our culture, it's not based in thruth

I honestly think its the GMO's, nitrates and all the other crap that's added to our food/water/air supply now that is causing autism. Especially when women are exposed to these things while pregnant. I also feel these are the same things that are causing the cancer rate to be so high.
I wouldn't worry about getting autism from the MMR. Like a pp said, I also know of a few unvaccinated children who have autism and other developmental delays. What would be the explanation for those kids?
Btw, I've also been very scared lately with all these outbreaks!

My ped does it at 15 mo. I said I wanted to wait til 2. My kids aren't in daycare and that first dose doesn't cover 100% anyway. There is another dose later on too (not sure when). I know studies disproved but I feel like why risk. JMO.

My ped does it at the 18 month visit. I had considered pushing it off a bit, but the recent outbreaks are a bit too close to home for my comfort level. She'll be getting it at her 18 month appt in 2 weeks.

I agree with thinking it might be linked with l the gmo, etc and a lack in diagnosing kids back then. But isn't hard to diagnose a kid with autism till they are around 2?

DH is in the process of interviewing for a job in Orange County California where the measles virus is spreading. If he gets the job, we will be relocating there in a couple of months. My DD will still be too young for the vaccine but the second she is old enough for it she is getting it so she can be protected.
I am concerned about the MMR vaccine (like I am all shots) but not because Autism. Like others said, the research linking MMR and Autism is critically flawed. So much so that I believe The Dr that suggested the link had his professional license revoked. I am concerned because It breaks my heart to see DD with a fever and lethargy when she is sick and since there is a risk of this (like with all shots) I will be concerned.

Most of the reason for this increase is because they changed the criteria for diagnosis back in 2000. People who were diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, emotional disorders, and and behavioral disorders as of 2000 fit the criteria for Autism. Also, more doctors started becoming more familiar with its symptoms. Lastly, 50 years ago many parents didn't know what to do with their child once they were diagnosed, so their children were sent to institutions. Since institutions are now gone and all patients are being transferred to community living we are seeing more of them.
In 2013, they made some changes to the DSM and now this numbers will start to decrease. Not because people have changed, but because some of the characteristics of ASD are no longer included.
ETA: there are special services out there for people diagnosed with Autism. Therefore, for people who were previously just "quirky" or socially stunted, now receive specific benefits just for being diagnosed. Sadly, there are families who will go Dr jumping just to get the diagnosis. I have also seen families fight for their kid's diagnosis to be changed from MR or OHI to Autism for the services.

I'm a pretty natural mom, and it annoys me to no end that people think vaccines cause autism. More and more research is indicating that autism probably starts in the womb and is likely caused by epigenetic changes of gene expression (ie. Environmental toxin exposure).
But I disagree about better diagnosis. If that's the case, where are all the autistic 40, 50, 60 and 70 year olds?

Most often the symptoms are first noted between 18 months and 3 years.

They most def exist, they are probably not looking to be diagnosed at their ages.

I'm not saying autism was non existent back then, but it was not as prevalent as it is now. An almost 80 percent increase in the past decade cannot be explained by just better diagnosis alone.
You should listen to the congressional hearings from last year on the autism epidemic. Even the CDC doctors could not deny the statistics.

Well...I think they are out there. Most adults are not going out looking to be diagnosed. I think I read that if you tested them- many are in research, doctors, etc. most people go looking for answers out of concern for their kids and wanting services. The adults most likely have mild forms like aspergers. Where they are very smart but socially off.
While I don't think there are numbers like there are today. I think large numbers in the past were never diagnosed esp bc the age group you are referring to there were stigmas attached to diagnosis and being different.
My grandparents were deaf. Back then it was common to ship your child off, or ignore things. People were not open as they are today.

It is much more common now to have a child diagnosed before 2. i knew at 6 months, and fought for 9 months to get his diagnosis. this is going back 7 years ago...
i have many friends who have children that have been diagnosed now at about 12-15 months.
