Re: Parents who push off the mmr shot??

I feel like not many on this thread have answered the OP actual question.

No, the measles outbreaks do not make me feel any differently about this shot. I'm much more concerned with my DC's reaction to the shot then I am about her 1. contracting measles and 2. suffering some horrific life altering rare complication from measles. Contrary to what has been posted above, Measles do not present an immediate threat to the life of a healthy normal child. In all these outbreaks, how many healthy, normal (not immune-compromised) children do you hear of dying? How many do you hear of suffering serious complications?

I think YOU need to make the decision YOU are comfortable with given your individual child and his or her "needs."

I didn't answer the original question, but you did it perfectly!

No, I am not freaking out. Ds will be one in a few weeks and he will be getting the shot at his one year appointment, just as his three older brothers did.

Re: Parents who push off the mmr shot??

I hate opening this an of worms and usually don't but after seeing it said over and over I have to

Does vaccines cause autism? I don't know. But neither do you. Neither does anyone

It is so easy to sit and say it does not and throw out medical journals etc but when it's personal. It's different

Now what I'm saying is not for every kid. And in no way and i saying this vaccines causes all autism

I'm saying I don't know why. But I will tell you what I do know

I do know my niece was a typical 15 month old. Babbling talking a few words typical kid
She revived her mmr vaccine and since then has not uttered a word has not stopped having seizures and is severely autistic

Now I know all will say it was before,it wasn't that etc but of it was your kid what would you think

I am not anti mmr. I will give it to my own kids when they are a bit older. What I am saying and why I wrote this is just to say its not black and white

So again it's so easy to sit and say it not from this or that Try saying that to a parent directly affected

Look at them and say you are crazy and this. Doesn't call this ans they go to another neuro appt or another therapy
Session

Jmo. Had to say this for my niece. Bc she can't say it herself

Thank you for putting this into perspective. You are right, who are we to say that a parent of an autistic child who believes a vaccine induced their child's condition is just wrong and imagining things? I don't think we can.

Honestly, I do not understand when I see this and all the other posts about vaccines and how safe they are and that they don't cause this or that. Fine, the one study that was so hyped re: autism was discredited but, does anyone read the vaccine product inserts that are published by the companies that make the vaccines? DOes anyone look at the CDC or the vaccine injury compensation site? The companies themselves and the CDC list many rare but life-altering reactions to these vaccines. There ARE kids out there who have been seriously harmed by vaccines! Kids who have gotten extremely high fevers, seizures, and brain inflammation that lead to permanent damage. Autism is even listed as a rare but reported complication of the DTAP vaccine. There are parents out there that have won lawsuits against the gov't re: vaccine injury with autism as a consequence. I hate debating on these threads but, seriously, I hope no one is relying on a bunch of strangers on the internet to inform them re: vaccine safety.

Same here
eta that im not concerned about autism per se. im concerned about the variety of different reactions that parents have seen their children suffer, like seizures, high fevers, etc. many parents say that after that, autism traits had developed. i also suspect that changing the categorization on the DSM V could partly be political.

I totally agree with both of you! We don't know exactly what causes autism, it could be a perfect storm of genetics, environment, and then the mmr shot. Who knows. But FACT is that there are many little girls who died after the guardisel shot, so many children have had reactions.

My husband suffered a severe reaction from the mmr shot which was so odd at the time (before google) that doctors were baffled. It left him with lasting complications today. Me personally, I always ran extremely high temperatures from all vax that I got my doses cut in half. Everyone is different and all parents need to make the decision they feel is best for their child. But bottom line is none of us really know and I think the professionals don't really know either.

Re: Parents who push off the mmr shot??

I base all of my vaccination decisions on what my ped recommends as well as documented medical studies instead of opinions and blogs.
My pediatrician linked me to 2 studies that show both adverse reactions + higher risk of febrile seizures when MMR is delayed.

My twins had theirs at 15months.

Gina, I am so sorry. I had no idea Chat Icon This is scary and further raises my suspicions that genes mutate in normal children who develop autism, not those who are born with it. I wish we could confirm and know what causes this change. OMG how scary for your family. Chat Icon

I want to say thank you for all the responses. I hope no one got offended or mad over this thread. I know linking anything to shots usually is a debate and I'm glad it didn't get to heated!!! That said I'm gonna talk all this over with my ped when I go for his 12 month well visit and take it from there. I just wish this world was a better place for our children.

There was an article in The NY Times that the increase in autism could be related to the mom having allergies. Something happens in the womb. Autism is considered an autoimmune disorder, like am allergy. There is a rise in allergies as we have better hygiene. Think of all the peanut allergies now. Look up the article. It made sense.

Re: Parents who push off the mmr shot??

My brother has autism, and lost a lot of language around the time he got the mmr vaccine. There is tons of annecdotal evidence that is very similar. I don't think it causes autism, but I feel like if you are already predisposed to autism, it could exacerbate its symptoms. This is my personal opinion, and for that reason we will be delaying the MMR.

It could be paranoia bc I work in the field and I have a sibling with autism, but we are selectively/slow vaccing for this reason.

Re: Parents who push off the mmr shot??

I think most pediatricians will let you delay if the child is not in school or daycare. My DS had it at 18 months because he was in daycare. If he hadn't been in daycare, I would have considered delaying a bit longer.

I agree 100% with what Gina said. My DS has autism. I don't think it was caused by the vaccine, but I do know moms whose children had similar experiences as her niece. Lots of articles are published about what they think the causes might be, but no one is really sure yet what those causes are. These has been a lot of research that points to there being a genetic factor, that it runs in families. I am no expert, but my personal belief is that there is a genetic predisposition, but that envirnonmental factors and toxins have caused the numbers to rise. IMO, vaccines could fall into that category for someone who has a genetic predisposition. If you have an older child who had an experience like Gina's niece and the experts who study this are saying that they are confident that there is a genetic link, would you continue to vaccinate that child or younger children? It's easy to say what you would do when you aren't in that situation.

Someone earlier in the thread said due to the DSM changing the diagnosis, the numbers should drop. It will be interesting to see if that is so because the CDC just came out with #s that say ASD affects one in 68 children - up from the last estimate which was 1 in 88. I don't think the rise in diagnosed cases can only be attributed to better and earlier diagnosis but that other factors come into play.

Parents who push off the mmr shot??

"Both are linked to autism, especially in the mother. One large Danish study, which included nearly 700,000 births over a decade, found that a mother’s rheumatoid arthritis, a degenerative disease of the joints, elevated a child’s risk of autism by 80 percent. Her celiac disease, an inflammatory disease prompted by proteins in wheat and other grains, increased it 350 percent. Genetic studies tell a similar tale. Gene variants associated with autoimmune disease — genes of the immune system — also increase the risk of autism, especially when they occur in the mother."

I wonder if this applies to MS, too Chat Icon I worry about this all the time...

My kids are long done with their MMR shots, but I did delay the shot for each of them till they were 3 years old. While I imagine there is always a risk of vaccine injury, I noticed that most parents reported their children were around 15 to 18 months when they received a vaccine that harmed them. I hoped my kids' nervous systems would be more developed and able to withstand the vaccines better at a slightly older age.

If my kids were younger, the measles outbreak wouldn't change my feelings about delaying at all. There's a reason measles cases make the news: it's because they are rare. When a child loses their emerging language and regresses into autism after a vaccine, it doesn't make the news: it's because it happens all too often.

I understand that Andrew Wakefield's study linking the MMR to autism has been discredited, but at the same time, I am not going to read the testimony of thousands of parents who saw their children change forever and say that all those parents are crazy, either.

I think YOU need to make the decision YOU are comfortable with given your individual child and his or her "needs."

Just so you know 40% of children under 5 are hospitalized if they get measles.

Many children under 5 are hospitalized if they get the flu. Or pneumonia. Or RSV. Or a bad stomach virus.

Just out of curiosity- and I swear I am not trying to be snarky at all, just always was curious- if this vaccine IS linked to autism or changes in children that cause them to be autistic like when they get it, how does delaying the shot until let's say 2 or 3 years old change that?
Do children at 2 or 3 not regress into autism the same as 15 month olds?
I would think that if the fear was the shot causing autism or symptoms similar, that you should NEVER give it to your child, not just delay it, kwim?
Just always wondered about that.

More mature nervous system, etc.

I don't think delaying the shot is primarily due to fear of autism I for one also don't feel we need to shoot our kids up with so many drugs all at once. She got all her shots, but they were spread out when I could. I still fell into the CDC ranges.

But as soon as I said 'delay' or 'separated' I got this "You are an idiot to think autism has anything to do with shots, that's totally been disproved." sort of attitude. Great, fantastic. I don't care. Its my kid and I will give her the shots in the order I deem fit. Why does anyone care as long as she got her shots?

It had/has nothing to do with autism. I just wanted to separate it out. Yet I'm lumped into that same group each and every time. Even if its not the MMR I'm talking about.

I am also one of those who has seen children change from before and after. Its horrifying and something I could NEVER say doesn't happen. Even if the % is so tiny to the general public, if its your child its the only 1 out of XXXXXXXXX that matters... YOUR one.. YOUR child. I can't dare to brush off the fears of another mother so easily.

I didn't feel your question was snarky, and there will be no snark in my answer--

I don't think what I did is foolproof. I admit I was nervous after many vaccines, even the MMR at age 3 (and each DTP... I have heard many parents tell of a vaccine injury from this shot, I'm not sure how the MMR always gets the negative publicity)

Strictly from my anecdotal observations, I noticed that most stories of regression and permanent changes occurred in children within a particular timeframe-- I would say 12 to 24 months. Cases involving older children may be out there, but I personally hadn't stumbled across any stories of a typically-developing 3 year old who regressed into autism after a vaccine. So while no parent can ever be certain if their child will have damage from a vaccine, I guess I just did what I could to mitigate the risk and still have them fully vaccinated in time for preschool. No matter what path we take, we're all just trying to do what we think is best for the kids and be able to fall asleep at night with a clear conscience, right?

Also, there is a huge difference between delaying a shot and not giving it at all. I'm actually totally pro-vaccine-- we even get flu vaccines each year, lol. I can't say I support the recommended vaccine SCHEDULE, and I've spent a lot of time (and co-pays!) bringing my kids in for vaccine visits to space out and delay their shots.

No, that I can totally understand. Spacing them out because it is a lot at once. I get that 100%.
Just when the whole autism link was running wild, I often wondered what delaying it would do. If it really did cause autism, it would cause it at any age I'd guess.

Parents who push off the mmr shot??

My DS is 2 years 3 months. I had planned on delaying MMR until he was 3 but the combination of the current outbreak and an upcoming cruise (where there will be children from all parts of the country/international) caused me to change my decision.

DS had his MMR a month ago at 2 years 2 months. I spent 6 weeks prepping his immune system, pumping him with probiotics and cod liver oil.

He had no reaction and to date he is doing well. He had ONLY the MMR administered and it is the only vaccine that we will administer this year. next year he will get the second dose....I am ensuring he has ample time to rid himself of the toxins in the vaccine.

If DS were under 2, I would have waited even in spite of the current outbreak....2 was my absolute minimum age.
