we are not allowed in the back area when DS is getting xrays or cleaning. its not a room though..its a large open area where other kids are being worked on too..by the dental hygenists and then dentist. The office is set up like a playground..with a jungle gym in the waiitng room and the back is like walking into a tree house. Its a huge open space that the kids are being worked on.
we are then called back when the cleaning is done to talk to the dentist.
I understand why they do it that way..parents are distracting to the kids. i think its way easier to examine them when the parents arent there.
If it were just a room and one person in at a time, I'd be skeptical. my mom always stood in the back of the room when I was a kid.
DS is 5 and hasnt had any cavities yet so we have no experience with having actual procedures. Im just going by how they work with kids for cleanings and exams.

I wouldn't go back there. No way.
ETA: DD injured a tooth when she was about 20 months. I took her to a pediatric dentist to have it checked and they allowed me in the room (I wasn't fond of that place for other reasons). We went to a different ped dentist to have the tooth pulled a few months after she turned 2 and again, I was allowed in the room. I was also allowed in for her latest dental check up and for my 5 yr olds check up.
There is no way I would allow my child in the room alone ESPECIALLY if they will be under any sort of anesthetic/laughing gas, whatever- until they are at least 10.

Both dentists have a paragraph in the paperwork I signed saying that they prefer a child to go in without a parent because it's easier- but neither even mentioned that to me when the time came. It wasn't even a question that I would be in there.

I also tend to question when dentists want to do major procedures on BABY teeth that will be falling out soon anyway/
But I don't trust the medical profession much so.....
I used to the think that same as you Nervous until my DS had a cavity that I didn't fill. It ended up getting deeper, he developed an abscess and then needed the tooth extracted. Once he was off antibiotics after the abscess was drained and cleaned out and the extraction site was healed, he needed a metal spacer put in. If the spacer wasn't put in, then he other teeth would shift and wouldn't allow for his adult tooth to come in.
Now, when they tell me they need a sealant or a filling I do it. The cavity can effect the adult tooth.

Parent not allowed in room during dental work on a child?
Just as a follow up to my post about Kidd smiles from the other day, DS had a filling done on Monday and not only was I allowed back with him but I was able to sit on the dental chair with him with his legs across my lap, and hold his hand the entire time.
