I had a horrible dental experience at age three following a tooth injury. The dentist drilled my tooth without novocaine thinking it was "dead," but it was not. My mother was not "allowed" in the room with me, so I was all alone and terrified. I was traumatized and now have a dentist phobia for life.
Please do not go along with this!! Find a dentist who will use light sedation and allow you in the room. This is what my DSs dentist does, and they love going!

I also tend to question when dentists want to do major procedures on BABY teeth that will be falling out soon anyway/
But I don't trust the medical profession much so.....

Depends on the kid & age & the parent.
Was talking about this with dentist friends of ours.
Often little kids can freak even without pain.
Often parents can't watch their kids freak.
Many kids do better without parents.
Some parents are great and can comfort kid in restraints...
Choices are often to let the kid try to do work (plus or minus MILD sedation).
If that fails, little ones often need general anesthesia for extensive work.

Find a new dentist. There is no reason that you cannot be in the room with your child while they are with the dentist. It is one thing if they say you have to step out for the few seconds while doing an xray but there is no reason that you can't be there for the rest.

We go to Kidd smiles in Merrick and they allow one parent to be in the room during any work. They don't like siblings though because they can be distracting and the rooms are small so they get crowded fast.
They use sweet air , no restraint jacket unless you sign a form and give permission .

Will the child be knocked out for the procedure/surgery? If so, yes, the parents are not allowed in the room. Both my kids had surgery on their teeth (pulled out) and I was not allowed in the room. This was done at an Oral Surgeon though, not the Pediatric dentist so not sure if there would be a difference with that.

I would imagine that if they mentioned some kind of restraint blanket being used, that they will not be sedated at all otherwise no need for the blanket, kwim?

She will probably need the tooth extracted. Would it be better to go to an oral surgeon rather than a pediatric dentist? She's only three

I worked in the dental field and many times kids do better when their parents are not in the room, because moms and dads can make the child more nervous. Parents never think that can be true but children react off the way their parents are reacting. many times parents say or do things trying to help the child but it can make things worse for the child making it harder to work on the child

I think there's a huge difference between suggesting to parents that they wait in the waiting room vs. Forbidding a parent to be there. I get that parents may overreact, but parents have a right to be there, and know their child best.
We use adelberg and Montalvan in massapequa on park blvd. DD has only had cleanings so I don't know what their policy is with more intense dental work.

I was just going to post about this. I remember seeing the hidden camera footage of this monster and its embedded in my brain forever. I will never leave my kids alone while having work done on their teeth. Just terrible

Exactly., I don't really give a cr@p to be honest about the logic behind it. My daughter, my choice. You dont' let me in there, it's not getting done. Period.
Look at the story posted above. THAT is the reason why. THAT trumps all the "well the kids do better without the parents, etc" NOPE!

That actually made me cry. I've always hated stories of any sort of abuse to children, but now that I have a daughter of my own, it's just so much worse to see/hear these stories. I picture it happening to MY child and it's too much to handle. This is exactly why I trust nobody. This world is too scary. And it pushes the reasoning ever MORE as to why a child should never be left alone in a doctor or dentist's office. You just never know. Even if it's not this sadistic and insane, the child can still be frightened without mommy and I will not allow that.

My daughter who is 5 has had 4 cavities filled and either me or my husband has always been in the room with he. we use dr. stacey ..garden city pediatric dentistry. Her practice is great.

Funny bc this is exactly where we went. I wonder why they told us no one is allowed in the room. Can I ask how old your DS was at the time?
My son was two when he had fillings there. They took him alone. It was so sudden I didn't even think to ask and I've always felt horrible that I let him go alone. He wasn't traumatized though. He wanted to stay and watch the movie after.

Really - I'm surprised. My DS was 4 at the most when he had the root canal he had a bunch of work done in his first year of visits there. He was always in one of the open rooms when he was little. He wasn't sedated but they used gas and novacane.

Exactly! But it is hard to convince a parent of this. This is commonly preferred amongst pediatric dentists, but not all do this as parents insist on remaining in the room. I would change dentists if you are not comfortable, but I do not think your dentist is acting outside the standard of care nor going to harm your child.
