Overweight
Does being overweight (and not for medical reasons) mean that you must be lazy, unmotivated and ugly?
Can't it just mean that you really enjoy food?
I am curious what your opinions are here.
The wedding/weight gain thread made me think about this because so many people equated 'gaining weight' with 'letting yourself go'...

Re: Overweight
I'm overweight because of a thyroid condition and my love of food. I've lost weight in the past, but I've been unmotivated for the past year. I'm hoping my friends wedding motivates me again.

Re: Overweight
IMO- Being overweight doesn't mean your lazy. I think many of us have our reasons for gaining weight. Some are medical, stress, depression or just loving food. I think you have to make a choice of making a lifestyle change if it's something affecting your life. If you're content w/ yourself physically & emotionally then live your life how YOU choose to live it. Don't let magazines or manaquins determine your idea of beauty.

Re: Overweight
I love to eat...I admit it..I love to cook and I like to feed people as well.
I don't think I will ever be thin...I may be thinner and I would like to be but I have to strike a careful balance.
I like to swim, ride bikes and dance but I hate the gym.

Re: Overweight
I'm the complete opposite of lazy (to the point of annoyance for DH ) and I'm overweight.
I absolultey love food, but I also gained A LOT of weight since my wedding because of IF medication.
I don't know anyone who would have classify me as lazy...

Re: Overweight
I am overweight and I half way agree with the "lazy" title. I am not lazy in the fact that my house is clean, I run around donig errands and I am an active person socially, BUT you can call me lazy when it comes to fast food, choosing not to exercise and overall not being careful about my choices when it comes to food.

Does being overweight (and not for medical reasons) mean that you must be lazy, unmotivated and ugly?
Does being slender mean that you must be active, motivated and beautiful?
The answer is "no" to both.

Re: Overweight
no, but it is sometimes a sign of carelessness. at extreme weights (too large or too little) the body will not function properly and will be prone to health issues.
therefore, i think allowing oneself to be significantly overweight and not caring to get healthier simply due to the love of food = carelessness

I agree.. but I think that society doesn't see it the same way. The words "Fat" and "Lazy" seem to go hand in hand. ANd 'Slim' and 'Beautiful' also seem to be a matched set. Nice to know that not everyone here feels that way.

Re: Overweight
I think it absolutely does not mean ugly. One of the prettiest women I know is overweight. Does it mean unmotivated and lazy? I think it depends on the person, the circumstances and how overweight we're talking. Some people are just cursed with a horrible metabolism. But I think in a lot of cases people are overweight because they are unmotivated and lazy. Losing weight has to be one of the hardest things in the world to do, especially when you love food, but it seems as a country we've become obese and lazy. Portion sizes are ridiculous and it's not being countered by enough physical activity.
I worked at an Outback Steakhouse all through college and I'd get table after table of obese families ordering cheese fries and bloomin' onions—tremendous portions of horribly fattening food—like they just didn't care. That to me is unmotivated!

Re: Overweight
Although there could be a lot of reasons, I think you're right in that the stigma is there. Many will see an overweight person as a lazy slob, gross, uncaring.
But we are the fattest country in the world, aren't we? That's no accident. I like to eat and so does my husband. But I'm a lot more informed now about what I'm putting in my body and do factor that in when making meal choices. Sometimes I choose to ignore what I know too.
I'm not obese but I'm no petite thing either. I know I *can* do it because I had a big motivator - my wedding - and lost 30 pounds. I felt great and amazed even myself with my dedication to it.
Why I don't go back and do it again is for a lot of reasons. Laziness does have something to do with it, I'll admit that. I prefer my life changes as gradual, it's easier to maintain when you don't make drastic changes.
I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore. Where are the Snickers bars?

I put on weight after I got married...And kept it on for a while. Yes, I was lazy about food--I was eating what was easy and tasted good. It was high calorie. Didn't mean I wasn't going to the gym; I was, but I was lazy about my food choices. AND I was unmotivated to lose the weight. I'm not unmotivated or lazy in life, but at that point losing the weight wasn't a priority to me. It took seeing a picture where I looked especially heavy to make me say I wanted to become motivated about losing weight.
So yes, I think it often means people are LAZY ABOUT FOOD CHOICES. Not in general. And unmotivated or uncaring about making the changes necessary to lose weight.

Re: Overweight
I'm slightly overweight for my height - I blame it on the fact that I love eating - ever since I moved into my home, I've been cooking more and more cause I have the room and time to experiement.

Re: Overweight
I'm about 15-20 lbs above where I should be (according to my Dr), and it's because of a combination of bad choices in 3 areas: large portion size unhealthy food not enough exercise

A side note, slim and beautiful no longer have the meaning that it did years ago. It used to mean curves and toned muscles, these days it means bony, often to the point of being unhealthy. Today's version of "slim and beautiful" is not something I aspire to be.
Edited for typo

Completely agree. I was watching that "Most Smartest Model" show the other day and I would call none of those women beautiful.
What happened to celebrating hips and an hourglass figure? I keep seeing lots of plastic surgery and botox and bodies like a 12 year old boy. That's not sexy or beautiful to me either.

ITA! I was 30 lbs heavier about 4 years ago, and I was lazy about food and excercise, but not in general. A lot of my weight gain came from eating junk instead of taking the time to cook and count calories and portions. Now, I maintain my weight, but I have to be careful not to give into the urge to order in all the time.
