Overweight and TTC
I am curious as to how many of you are trying to get pregnant although you may have some weight to lose. I'm not at my ideal weight right now but I'm dying to get pregnant. My head tells me to continue to lose weight first but my heart just wants to jump in and get pregnant asap!!
I've been eating very healthy lately, I'm taking prenatal vitamins, I'm exercising and losing weight too but I just am not sure if I should worry about trying to conceive right now. I'm confused.
How many of you are TTC even though you have weight to lose. Of those they may have had the experience before did you find that you had a healthy pregnancy? Just wondering. I want to do the right thing here but you guys know how it is. Thanks for any input!!

Re: Overweight and TTC
I am. Though I've lost about 50 lbs, I still have another 100 to lose. For me, I think as long as you practice living a healthy lifestyle, it's ok. Although I went to the Dr. and got clearance to TTC first--I wanted to be sure the extra weight wouldn't be a problem.

Re: Overweight and TTC
I am overweight. I need to lose about a 100lbs. When I went to the gyno for my annual and to talk about TTC she said I had nothing to worry about. Many overweight women conceive naturally and go on to have healthy babies.
I exercise and try to eat better so that I wont gain anymore while TTC. As long at you are living healthy I don't see any problem with it.

I'm not overwieght, but I do know that your more likely to get pregnant if your considerably overwieght than if your just 10 pounds underwieght. I'm not saying that its good to be overwieght, and I don't know your situation, but from this, and your other post it sounds like your doing all the right things to create a healthy lifestyle that its totally condusive to getting pregnant.

Re: Overweight and TTC
I was overweight when I conceived my DD and had no problems conceiving and had no problems with my pregnancy. I just did all the right things while I was PG and everything went well. My BP was low the entire time, and I didn't have any complications. It sounds like you're on the right track. I say if you want to start TTC, then go for it.
p/s - I breast-fed my DD for 5.5 months, and ended up weighing less than before I got PG.
Good luck.

Re: Overweight and TTC
My GYN was very pleased that when we started TTC, I did not have extra weight to worry about when we started TTC. I had been about 120 pounds over weight and it always concerned him before given my family history of obesity and diabetes - he sees my sister and mother as patients as well.
I know/knew quite a few overweight women with irregular periods and once they lost weight, their cycles regulated. They were then able to get pregnant when they couldn't before. It is not a universal thing, but it is a possibility. I had been on the pill for so long and would not have known if my cycles would have been regular when I was heavy. It is likely that they wouldn't have been. Before the pill, they were not regular.
My mother was overweight when she had me and gained very little weight. They say that the heavier you are before you become PG, the less you should gain. She had gestational diabetes with a couple of her pregnancies. I am concerned for myself as there is diabetes on BOTH sides of our families and I have to be very careful of my dietary/nutritional intake.
There are many overweight women who have healthy children and that is fact. But there are also many risks for the health of the mother as well as the child when the mother is overweight.

Hofstra - welcome to the TTC board! I've bumped an old (and great thread for you!)

How do you know this? While many women who are plus size get pregnant without any problems, there is also a large percentage of plus size women that cannot get pregnant because of their weight. PCOS is very common in overweight women (even though there are slim women that suffer from it as well). In addition to PCOS which makes it difficult to conceive because you don't ovulate, that even if you do get pregnant, like Goldi said, you are at greater risk for health problems (gestational diabietes is one risk).
I've seen two doctors (I hated my first one) and after the next 3 cycles (two of which will be IUI) I am not PG, my doctor is sending me to a RE, but my point is that both of my doctors have made mention of my weight.
ETS: I think you are on the right track in creating a healthier lifestyle for yourself! Keep it up!
