Over agressive salespeople

I went to the mall on Saturday to look for a few shirts for work. Here was my experience at NY & Co.

The very second I step into the store:

Salesgirl: "Hi... Welcome to New York & Co" Can I help you with anything?"

Me: "No, thanks I'm just browsing"

Salesgirl: "Are you looking for anything in particular?"

Me: "No"

Salesgirl: "Do You have a New York & Co. Credit card?"

Me: "Yes, thank you"

(I proceed to walk away from psycho chick... She follows me)

Salesgirl: "Do you have our Rewards Card? Its not like a credit card"

Me: ::getting really frustrated:: "NO, but thank you"

Salesgirl: "Just to let you know that we are having a huge sale on pants- BUY one, get one half off"

Me: "Yes I know, there are signs all over the store"

All flustered, I walk over a table with some blouses & encounter another chick folding some stuff.

I didn't even touch the shirt yet..

Salesgirl: "can I help you with a size"

Me: "No thanks.. I'm just looking"

I touch the shirt to feel the material & this girl is staring at me. I move over 2 feet and she runs to the shirt I touched & refolded it.

Me:

I walk to another rack and the salesgirl folding pants says:"Just to let you know that we are having a huge sale on pants- Buy one, get one half off"

Now.. Is it just me.. Or does anyone one else really want to scratch these peoples faces right off? I understand the concept of having good customer service & letting the customer know that if we needed assistance, they are there to help us. But come on... That was ridiculous. I couldn't even shop!

I walked right out of the store... These girls were driving me nuts.

In cases like that, I ask for their name or their card and let them know (with a little bit of b*tchiness) that I'll find them IF I need their help.

I HATE AGRESSIVE SALESPEOPLE!!

It is a bit much in my opinion. It is nice to know that there are people around IF I need help... but not to hold my hand if I don't want it-

She should have picked up on the fact that you did NOT need help.

As a salesperson myself (not retail, but media sales) it drives me nuts. Its hard fine line between being helpful & too pushy.


I actually have told them to leave me alone. In fact, you know those creepy annoying people in the center of the mall that sell crap (like massages, lotions, etc). This one lady came up to me and almost blocked me, I said "Enough, Leave Me Alone!!".

I have no shame.

I can definitely understand your being irritated by them in the store... I probably would have as well.

On the flip side, however, I work for a company as a trainer and one of the things I do is train sales. These sales girls all seem to be doing exactly what we would train our employees to do. Interact with the customers, see if they can help you. The first girl should have left it alone after she asked you if you were looking for anything in particular. After that she started getting pushy.

But it is nice to see that there is a store out there where the employees are not just playing on their phones and ignoring the customers! Sorry you had a frustrating experience!

They are annoying.

But as a pp stated they are doing what was told to them. I used to work at the Limited and from what you just posted they might be having a competition going on.

As for the first person, they always have to greet and say can I help you.

And the table lady probably didnt want you messing up her table.

I remember sales people used to fight over customers, like an all out brawl. I was never good at that cause I hated annoying ppl. So I was put in the back or responsible for tables and setting up displays or register. I think retail was my hardest job ever

I heard that they actually cant approach you if you are walking within a certain amount of feet from the entrance of a store.

I hate sales people like that!

But I bet they were due for a secret shopper or something and were all paranoid about making sure they pass the secret shop.

Overkill but I'd rather have people willing to be helpful rather than the days were you weren't helped.

I've seen an increase in customer service in this economy. Not sure if it's a commission or a job preservation thing.

A little overkill but unfortunately you cant blame them...its what is required from them

That's exactly how I was trained to be when I worked at Express & I hated it!

I seriously annoyed myself.

" Can I help you with a size"
is code for " don't touch this meticoulsly foldeld piled of sweaters I that I jsut tediously organized into size order & will have to re-do before one of the assistant managers inspects it, if you dare go near it."

We each had goal of open CCs & we would get more or less hours based on how well did. I was always at the fornt door & no one wants a CC as soon as they walk in, so I did horribly at this.

I will walk out of a store if I am pounced on like that. I know it is their job, but I don't have to shop there.

I don't fool myself--I know they are not trying to "help" me, they are trying to sell things & reach goals.

A lot of those people are working here illegally, I doubt they will listen to a mall's rules and regulations They annoy the crap out of me!

Ahhh seems I have a few pet peeves and this is one of them!!!

I especially hate the .. going over to the shirt you just touched to refold it routine..

Wow, that is really irritating. I dont like that tactic either. A simple hello and welcome to _____ store is appropriate. I had this experience recently at Pier 1 by me. The salesgirl FORCED me to take a basket, following me around the store, asking what I was shopping for today.. IT really is a turn-off to the customer.

If it's in their lease (and it most likely is, as well as how and when they can approach you, etc.) and you complain to the mall management, then YES they will listen because they will get fined for breaking their lease.
