BIL always orders the most expensive thing off the menu. He's always goes for the biggest steaks, special salmon dishes etc. Especially when he knows someone else is paying--- he literally just looks for the item that costs the most money and picks that one.

Lol, sounds like my SIL. Always gets her own appetizer and dessert too, even if nobody else does.

I would never.

I don't think it's necessarily rude.

This reminds me of when I was dating DH. He invited me out to some restaurant with his friends for "wings". I'm not really a wings person so I ordered something else off the menu and he was afraid his friends would think I was being rude.

Whatevs though.

I always try to gauge what everyone else is ordering and then I choose what I am going to have accordingly.

If everyone is getting burgers I'm certainly not going to order a $42 steak. I would feel awkward ordering a very expensive dish unless everyone else was as well.

This.

My BIL is the same way............AND he also orders MULTIPLE alcoholic beverages on top of that. It's beyond inconsiderate.

Yes it is rude. We had a party with a priced fix menu and an open bar. The people who drank I had no problem paying for their drinks because as people say, if you would pay for it yourself I don't see a problem. Most drank beer, wine or a simple vodka.

I had a guest that was constantly ordering top-shelf liquor straight and I have never seen them pay for 1 drink yet alone an expensive one. They took advance of us being generous and treating our family and friends. I haven't hosted another party since but when I do, things will be different.

I wouldn't really call it rude because they were invited out. However, I would never do it.

I don't think it's rude. If I'm hosting a dinner then I want my guest to be comfortable ordering whatever they want. If I cant afford the $40 meal then I need to not host the dinner or pick a cheaper place. I would order whatever I wanted.

No offense, but how can you get mad when you have an open bar? If you wanted to put restrictions on it, then you should have.

ETA: I think that it isn't fair to call someone rude if there were no parameters set. I recently went to a dinner with friends and the restaurant was picked because everyone found it affordable. If you don't think you can afford everyone to order the highest price entrée (of course this won't happen) then you shouldn't chose that restaurant

I would have put restrictions but I didn't realize that I would have been taken advantage of. Out of 30 adults there is always one that makes you regret some of your decisions. I did say going forward things would change and unfortunately this person would still need to be invited.

If it is open bar, that means every type of drink is included. Whether it's premium liquor or well depends on what was included in the open bar. But to pay for open bar and then get mad at what people ordered that was included in the open bar is beyond silly. I could see being upset only if it cost you extra because the type of liquor wasn't included in your open bar (your package was well only, they asked for Grey Goose).

To answer the OP, I would never do that but I don't think it's "rude" per se.

Isn't open bar already paid for in advance with the package? Did the bar charge you more at the end of the party for top shelf liquor? Or were you running a tab at the bar?

ITA especially with a range like $16-$42. If the range was more $30-$42, I might.

I wouldn't do it. The range is large enough that I could find something I liked in a lower priced category. There is nothing that I NEED to have to eat or can't pay for myself at a later date.

I'll save the expensive meals for when someone else isn't picking up the tab.

and yes, I think it's rude if everyone is ordering a $25 entree & someone picks the $40+ entree.

I agree with all of this.

We ran a tab. I didn't care that someone ordered Grey Goose as opposed to Absolute (I would have done the same). I don't remember the name of the liquor but they were getting double shots of some expensive liquor that was around $15 each. All other drinks were no more than $8 each. I find it rude and that is my opinion. As I said to begin with, I have learned my lesson and this won't happen again.

Ah, so that technically isn't open bar. You just ran a tab. Definitely a learning lesson.

If I was ordering the most expensive thing on the menu, I would insist I pay for at least half.

I think it's rude and taking advantage. At the same time, you can't expect people to be considerate unfortunately. I've been in the same shoes and just had to Chat Icon over it.

Ah ok...yeah that makes a difference. That's not open bar. I was just a bit confused.
I agree. I think it's taking advantage in that case and definitely lesson learned.

Ordering most expensive item on menu when someone else is picking up check

To be fair I think if a host is going to judge or side-eye someone for what they order then they should offer a pre-fixe menu and limit the booze to Beer/Wine or Top shelf open not Premium etc.

I know there are people in this world who take advantage. However, I don't think it's fair to offer an entire menu but only want guests to choose specific things. Maybe that night a person felt like the stuffed lobster lol.

I don't think it is rude but tacky, if I know that person wouldn't order the most expensive meal if they were paying for it. I wouldn't do it, because I never order expensive items from any menu.

If I'm hosting a party, I would hope my guests chose what they wanted off the menu that was presented to them, regardless of price.

And when I've been invited to a restaurant, I order what I want to eat there. I don't look for the most expensive item(s), but don't think I would order something just because it was cheaper for my host.

This. If you are going to be annoyed about what a person may order, then don't offer to treat.
