OPK line question

Soooo frustrating! I knew I should have bought the smileys but I like to see the line getting darker to know that O is approaching, KWIM?
So it's been light, darker, and then yesterday dark but not quite dark enough to call it a positive. This morning - light. So now I'm going backwards. Would you assume that yesterday was my positive? I did cheat and use FMU instead of afternoon b/c I drink water all day long and have a hard time bothering with them during the day at work.
Or does anyone know if your line can vary from light to dark?
I've been tracking but not TTC for probably 4 months now. Last month I got O signs REALLY early and felt O on CD8 so I hadn't been using OPKs leading up to that. I confirmed I was right b/c AF showed when expected. But before that, I had been noticing I O CD16-17.
Today is CD17 so it's in keeping with past O if yesterday was really my positive OPK.
Any thoughts?
Thanks ladies!

I know - that's what I was thinking - I should have brought one to work yesterday afternoon to test again.

FMU was dark - as in I had to stare to confirm that it was not quite as dark as the other line, but it was very dark.

I'm totally new to this so feel free to ignore me, but I would assume that yesterday was your positive. You probably just missed the peak in the afternoon.
