Odd bathroom situation...is it just me?
I will preface this by saying that I am not a fan of one of the parents involved in this, but I don't think I'm alone in being annoyed...
at my kids' daycare, there is a public bathroom that has a stall and 2 urinals (it's in an elementary school converted for their use)
I was in there with DD and DS and DD'd just finished using the bathroom (stall, obviously) and was washing her hands.
2 boys with their parents (one male, one female-she really bugs me..haha) BURST in and the boys quickly pull down their pants to pee at the urinals..DD and I were literally almost done-I was kind of in shock...of course, she asked me, "why does their pee look different?"
I mean, I get that kids need to go, but it was literally 2 seconds-I have no poker face and dad must have seen because he did apologize...thoughts?
I am over it, but I just thought it was odd..we are not close friends, cousins, etc., and I thought it was just weird is all

Uh yeah, totally inappropriate and if I were the parents, I would have made sure there were no little girls in there first, or made my kids use the stalls. Not whip it out right there.

Thank you! I had ONE friend who said she didn't think at that age it was a big deal..I'm not a prude, but DD is 4..come on!
ETA there is one stall and 2 urinals..if it's two boys..maybe..but this was different..

That boy must really have had to go but I don't like the idea of that setup with boys & girls sharing a public bathroom like that.

I think the daycare should make it a single user type bathroom with a lock on the door. I would not be comfy with my little girl running in to use the restroom, and a boy, or even a grown man standing at the urinal when leaving the stall. Totally weird setup!!

It was 2 boys..LOL...It's the public one, not the one they use all day..it's really for like when parents come in and need to go, etc.-every classroom above the infant room has their own bathroom access, so it's not their typical situation, if that makes sense...regardless, if you open the door and hear/see someone, wouldn't it be common courtesy to just wait a second?
The reason we were using it was because we play out front after school and DD had to go but her classroom was closed because the class was outside in the back, so understandably, they don't want people in and out of classrooms without staff there
I also don't think the grown men (dads, grandads, etc.) use the urinal...I don't THINK lol

Re: Odd bathroom situation...is it just me?
That is something the school needs to deal with. It's not the fault of the boys or their parents. My DC is 4 and knows girls / boys are different. No big deal to him

I don't think this happens often...DD knows the difference between boys and girls..I honestly just think it was rudeness on the parents' part...if these were all adults, wouldn't it be different?

Re: Odd bathroom situation...is it just me?
I'm confused this is a Co-Ed bathroom? Too many mixed genders. Why are there men and women in a bathroom and boys and girls. I can understand your small DS in a girls bathroom or the two boys with their mom in a ladies room but I don't understand how you were all in the same bathroom. Maybe I'm tired and slow lol.

Do you mean adults using the urinal? That would be completely different!

Oh I know, I saw that it was 2 boys, but I'm saying what if a man went in there to pee and a girl was already in the stall. Just seems SO weird to keep it a co-ed bathroom like that, that families are using. They should make an "occupied" sign, and one family at a time goes.

Re: Odd bathroom situation...is it just me?
The setup is still weird because it's a coed bathroom, so any one can walk in and really it's not their fault. I know my DS dance school has a bathroom and it also has a urinal (which they gross me out btw) but you lock it behind you. No one of a different gender can walk in. I don't fault anyone in this case, sorry.

The barhroom setup is oddd but She should have pulled their pants down when facing the wall and discretely.

Maybe they could have just said to wait a second-I get that it's a weird setup but I think courtesy wins-these people didn't lol but I might suggest something to the office, thank you-there might even be a lock and if so, maybe a sign letting people know to use it or something-it's the kind of thing where kids don't go in unattended, thank heavens

Also, it's not the daycare's property so I don't know what, if any, changes they can make physically as in to get rid of the urinal, but I agree that maybe they need a sign of some sort..

I don't think the urinal is the issue as its either a coed bathroom that should have a lock or should be labeled, female or Male.
She could've told the boys to wait or walked out when she saw your daughter, I know would've done that if I saw a girl in there. But I also can see my son running in and pulling his pants down like its state of the emergency. I just think the set up is the problem and they weren't wrong or rude.

I don't really think the parents of the boys are wrong. It seems to me like that's a very strange bathroom set up, and the day care should do something about that. I've never heard of a public coed bathroom that accommodates more than one person. There's too many opportunities for awkwardness with that. A mom could be using the stall when a dad walks in, or a dad could be using the urinal when a mom or a little girl walks in. Just so weird! If its meant to be a family bathroom, like so a daughter and dad, or a mom and son could go at the same time, I get that. But then there should be a sign on the door specifying its for one family at a time and there should be a lock on the main door.

Does your DH ever take DD out someplace without you? If so, there will come a point in time when he will have to take her with him into the men's room, and it might have men using the urinal in it. While what happened is awkward, IMHO, seeing a male at a urinal was bound to happen at some point. (says the mom of a girl who goes everywhere daddy goes)

Are you sure it isn't just a mens room? Male restrooms have stalls and urinals.

I think the fault lies with the day care for not putting a lock on, or making clear if this is an adult/child/coed bathroom and setting up a sign with a procedure at least (like an occupied sign, or "please knock and wait if being used" sign).
I honestly do not blame the boys or the parents.

Re: Odd bathroom situation...is it just me?
I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. I have two ds and probably would have waited until you had washed up or sent them in the stall. But if I wasn't there, I could guarantee my boys would have gone in and gone pee without even thinking about it or feeling weird that there was a girl in the room.

The key thing you said is if you were there, you would have asked them to wait-that ended up kinda being one of my points lol

I don't think they did anything wrong. What if they were peeing and then you walked in? Would you have walked out? Closed your eyes? That bathroom setup makes zero sense and frankly I'd make sure my kids NEVER use it when I'm not there.
