NY Times Article - added article
Not too shocking... But the Pope made some incredible comments regarding fertility treatments. I'm on my phone so I can't post the article.
ETA: ArticleMarriage is the only place 'Worthy' of conception!

I wonder if he knows how many married catholic families struggle with IF. I swear no one understands unless they walk a mile in our shoes. IF needs to be out-ed so that it as easy to talk about as cancer is. Then maybe people will think different IMO.

I am a practicing Catholic, and I admit, it is a bit of a struggle with me internally if I have to go the route of IVF.
That being said, he is a man, not God. This is between "you" the general you, and God or your higher power. Don't let one man get to you.

Just because the church does not agree with IVF, does not mean you are unloved by God or welcome in the church. I think that is a misconception of a lot of the things the church doesn't agree with.
It makes me so sad when the church comes out with things like this and it makes people feel as you do.

I saw this on the news and had a meltdown this morning.
Then I decided that the scientists and doctors who have helped so many women become pregnant have only done so by the wisdom and good grace of God, no matter what they call "Him".

Crap! First j lo now the pope?? Who next? Kim Kardashian??
I've never been super religious and don't considered myself catholic. I feel like God gave these scientists the knowledge to help woman with IF issues. People say that if you are infertile then God must not want you to have kids and I think that's just BS. I thank God there are other options. I don't me or my Ivf babies are going to He'll for it. It's just silly.
I will say though from the moment they told me I had 8 fertilized embies, I loved them. Like I was wondering how they were doing and wanted to visit them. (could be the hormones lol). So I do get that they have life at conception.
And I can't stand people who claim to be Catholic and nay say Ivf when they are using bc, cheating on spouses and getting divorces. People like to throw judgment around but never look at themselves.

Agreed...
Believe it or not, throughout my almost 4 years of TTC, 3 yrs and 6 losses and 6 IVF cycles, I've actually become MORE spiritual and religious. I felt like, I had too. I had nothing else. It's my relationship with God and he's not going to tell me how to live or what to do.
This article doesn't bother me like it does for others. For as long as I'm alive the church's views will be this way along with banning gays from marriage, pedophile priests, etc. Hypocrisy.
If the Pope was a fly on the wall in my pre-cana meetings with 2 of our Deacons, I think he'd be They were very honest, down to earth, every day people with everyday problems. This is how I know, I'm ok
And maybe I'll just go to confession

Re: NY Times Article - added article
Ive been thinking about this all day and I get more and more upset about it.
Why doesnt the catholic church stand up against people getting treatment for cancer? If what god wants was for people to get sick, why is it ok for us to seek treatment from a medical professional who has this gift of being able to treat us? But its not ok to get medical assistance for IF?
Furthermore, if my husband and I want to make a baby... whats the difference if I lie down in bed with him and make one or go to great lengths of emotional, physical, mental and spiritual turmoil thru IVF to make one. One doesnt make the baby any less loved in my eyes over the other.
As kelly said, ive become a much more spiritual person since this process began 2.5 years ago and I've gotten much closer to God throughout. Ive gone to 12 years of Catholic school and have never been so ashamed.

The Catholic Church believes in finding the *causes* of infertility and treating them, but not with ART (the approach is called NaProTechnology). I spent a year working with a facility that did things the Catholic way - where they did TONS of tests to find the cause of my infertility (blood tests, sonos, etc) - treated them (they'll do things like Clomid, antibiotics, laparoscopic surgery for endo, etc.) - but no IUI or IVF - just plain old BD!
It didn't work for us in the end, and I struggled GREATLY with my decision to move onto IVF (and still do) ... but at least FOR ME ... I feel better knowing I at least TRIED other things first.

ITA! So sad that the church, a place that is supposed to welcome everyone to worship and belong, shuns so many people

This is the same guy who went to Africa--home to 2/3 of the world's HIV-infected population--and warned them not to use condoms. If that isn't a prime example of religious dogma working against common sense and public welfare, I don't know what is.
So forgive me if I don't take this guy seriously at all.

Yeah the fact that he was part of the Nazi youth movement doesn't help, either.

Actually just learned that is was when he was 14 years old and was rquired by law for all 14 year old boys to enter this regime. He refused to cooperate because it went against his faith and he also refused to attend any meetings. Not defending him as an individual, just trying to get the full story.

I find it quite humorous that the church wants to complain that they continue to have a dwindling number of supporting members. It's this type of criticism and way of thinking that deters people away from the church.
