NT Scan/Blood Work
This is my second pregnancy - my first went off without a hitch... now i'm 13w 4d and my dr's office just called and said that the blood work came back and said that there is a possiblity of downs. This has now made me a nervous wreck and I have to wait till May 24th to have the amnio. Just the thought that something may be wrong is making me physically ill... Any suggestions would be appreciated - Thanks

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
Did they phrase it in that way? You should have gotten a ratio to give you an idea...I wouldn't worry too much just yet...there are still other factors that need to get weighed in and even if your ratio is low it's still a small chance. Good luck with the amnio and I hope it eases your mind.

Please don't worry yourself so much yet. They are always going to give you the worst case scenario just to cover themselves. I had a friend who they told would have a high chance and her baby was fine.

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
The ratio is 1/82 which just scared the life out of me - im 34 yrs old and have had some medical problems in the past and it never dawned on me that I would be considered a high risk pregnancy.
Im trying to breathe and think positive it's just very difficult to do - and the answers just seem so far away.
Thanks for the advice : )

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
as others said, try to relax (yeah, i realize t's much easier said than done) and stay positive.
1 in 82 still gives you a 81 chances of a happy and healthy baby. Your age also affects the numbers, if i remember correctly so that could've also brought down your numbers.
is there any way you can change the amnio date and have it sooner?
i hope it turns out alright!

Crashing:
My ratio was a 1:10 last year with dd.
She is PERFECT
Try not to worry, I was a mess and even ended up in the ER because I couldn't eat or sleep and the stress really got to me.

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
I had a 1 in 160 chance with my first DD. Had the amnio and she was/is healthy. I was 28 so this was an elevated ratio for my age. 2nd DC I passes the ultrasound. Now pregnant with 3 rd DC and got a 1 in 60 ratio. We chose not to do the amnio this time because I think this test is pretty ridiculous. Baby is due June 11th. The deciding factor for us to not do the amnio this time is that it wouldn't affect our decision to have the baby and we felt like we could put it out of our mind somewhat since I've heard so many people have high risk results and nobody had a baby with downs stndrome(my brother also got high risk results and his son is fine). We decided to do the amnio with my daughter because I could not put it out of my mind at that time. Just remember that you still have less than a 1percent chance that your baby has downs syndrome and you would play your odds in the lottery any day. Theres an overwhelming odds in your favor! Good Luck in whatever you decide to do. Just so you know if you do the amnio make sure to ask for FSH results which are 99 percent accurate within 24 hrs. I didn't know about that and had to wait 2 weeks for any results with my Dd

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
Also keep in mind that the chance of autism is something like 1 in 88 but nobody worries about that because it's not a prenatal test! This always helped me because it's not that far off from the statistic I got for Downs syndrome.

WOW that's an amazing story and ya know what - I never thought of the Autism odds - you are 100% right with that one.
Thank you so much for your input and i"ll be sure to ask for the FSH results because i don't think i can stand to wait 2 weeks after the test is done to find out the results lol

I was just thinking that I don't think FSH is the right name of the test. But there is definitely a preliminary test that gives results in 24 hours. I can't remember the exact name.

You're close - It's the FISH test, which gives preliminary results within 48 hours for Downs & trisomy 18 & 13 - gender too!
Good luck! I know it's hard not to worry, but try to breathe and hope for the best.

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
I know it's impossible not to worry- but chances are that everything will be fine. My quad screening results came back 1:128 for Downs. They also found a soft marker when they did a sono which brought the odds down to 1:64. My sweet lady was born on May 7 and she is ok. You'll be in my thoughts.

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
Please try not to freak out too much. the ratios are just that. It is nto a diagnosis. The panic that the test creates is why I opted out of it. I just had the amnio. (if you have any questuions about that I can help)
and another happy story. Mys sister's NT came back as 1 in 4. she had the CVS and has since given birth to a completely healthy boy.
Try to relax I am sure the amnio results will coem back fine (oh and the amnio will also give you the sex with no guessing if you want to know)

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
I have a lot of questions about the Amnio:
1. Is it dangerouse for the baby? 2. How badly does it hurt? 3. What's the recovery time (I have a 6yr old)
Thank you so much for the help

There is a risk of miscarriage, although small with the amnio. I would ask your dr for the exact odds. A miscarriage would happen within the first few days though so it's not something you would have to worry about the whole pregnancy, but still scary since it's a possibility. Honestly everyone else I know or have spoken to says it doesn't hurt, but I thought it did. Just when the needle goes in but I found it very painful. And I deal with pain very well. There really isn't a recovery time and alot of drs will say to take it easy but resume most normal activities. I stayed in bed for 24-48 hours as per my drs request to reduce the chance of miscarriage. I wasnt taking any chances. Itsba hard decision. Goodluck!

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
Are they basing it just off the blood work? There is a high rate of false positives. How was the nuchal fold thickness?
At my 12 weeks scan, I never even did the blood work because my scan came back with a very elevated neck thickness. They thought for sure it was a marker for Down's, so I had the CVS testing done right away (rather than wait for amnio). A lot of waiting, a lot of nerves and my baby boy will be 3 months old soon and he is beyond healthy!

Re: NT Scan/Blood Work
I just want to say that there is always a chance for downs... sometimes the chance is higher but based on your ratio, there's only a 1.3% chance which is still a statistic largely in your favor. Also, your age is factored into getting that ratio so if you're over 30, the ratio gets smaller and smaller... There are many false positives and unfortuantley leads to unnecessary worry. Not to say that your concern isn't legitimate b/c we would all be scared out of our minds. I just wanted to offer some perspective that it's still a less than 2% chance of having it.
HTH!!!
