Nissequogue?

Hi! i'm new to lifamilies. I have 4 kids (3 year old triplets and a 15month old). DH and i have been house hunting and are very interested in a house we found in Nissequogue, however i don't know anything about the area. Can anyone tell me a little about the area, the community, smithtown school district, etc? Thanks in advance!!

Smithtown school district, which is excellent. There is not one bad thing I could say about the area. I have tons of friends from there. Beautiful everywhere you go. Private beaches, minutes from the town of St James. If I could I would love to live there!

Re: Nissequogue?

It's a gorgeous area. My mom's cousin lives there, has about a 5 acre property.Chat Icon Smithtown SD is great. I believe they may have their own police dept in Nissequogue, and you have to be careful of your speed when driving through there. I could be wrong but it's ringing a bell for some reason.

Thanks everyone!! Can you tell me what the community is like? Nice people? Families with young children? Is it diverse? Close community or not?

Also are there good restaurants? Various kinds or same kinds of places? Groceries... Typical or any organic or local foods markets?

Re: Nissequogue?

We moved to the Nissequogue this summer. I'm loving it. Houses are spread out (2+ acres is typical, but it still feels neighborhood-y to me).

We're on a block of 12 houses - 7 of them have kids in school. 5 of which are elementary aged.

The school (St James Elem) has a very warm community feel to it. I wouldn't call it racially diverse (in my daughter's kindergarten class of 24, there's only 1 minority) but there are various economic backgrounds - as the school is fed from Nissequogue, St James & Head of the Harbor.

There isn't any shopping or restaurants in Nissequogue, but they're all just a few minutes away in St James & Smithtown. Whole Foods and Trader Joes are within 15 minutes for organic shopping, and you can be in the main shopping/restaurant areas of Smithtown/St James within 10 min (less time depending on where in NV you are - we're way up there...)

NV has its own police force and fire department, and thus its own village taxes.

Feel free to FM me for more info. And let me know which house you're looking at. I feel like I know all the listings!

Edited to add - we used an amazing realtor is who extremely knowledgable in this area. Without him, we wouldn't be in this house. Let me know if you want his info.

Re: Nissequogue?

LOVE this area!! The only negative I would say is that it is so far North. It really depends on where you work and how your commute would be although the Northern State is not too far away.

I agree with this. You have a decent ride down a long curvy road to get there. It is gorgeous though

My parents live in St. James. The area is beautiful and I love the beaches. I would consider moving up there in a minute if DH and I were not commuters. It is a royal PITA to get up there. There is no quick, direct access to the highways. That is probably the only negative though. Oh and the amount of raking you will be doing come fall time is ridiculous! Every year my dad gives us a weekly play by play..."44 bags this week combined with the previous 118..."Chat Icon

Re: Nissequogue?

I grew up in Nissequoque. It's a beautiful and safe area, and the school district is great. You almost don't feel like you're on LI when you're in Nissequouqe because it's pretty rural, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. It's definitely beautiful and peaceful, and it's near beaches that are private for Smithtown residents. The thing I didn't like when I was little is the houses are so spread out and the roads are narrow and windy so it's not the type of neighborhood where kids can meet up to play together unless their houses are very close by. I don't know what road the house you're interested in is on though, maybe it's on a side road that's not as dangerous for kids. You would also have to get used to driving out of your way to get to any stores. There aren't even any convenience stores in Nissequoque, you have to drive into Smithtown or St. James, maybe about 5 or 10 minutes, depending on what part of Nissequoque you are in, but really, it's not too far. Just something to consider if being able to run out and pick stuff up quickly is important to you. With all that being said, I loved it there, and I still love going back to visit my Dad. It really is a beautiful place. If I could afford to live there, I would. Feel free to FM me if you have any more questions!
