Newborn sleeping 5-6 hours a night?

Is it safe for DS to go that long without a feeding? I mean, Im not complaining in the least, Im just concerned that he is skipping a feeding or two.

Re: Newborn sleeping 5-6 hours a night?

i asked the same question last week becuase my 1st did not do that.

Our ped said it is fine and never to wake them.

I find that my newborn eats a LOT more during the day especially around 7-10 pm and then she sleeps from 10 to 5 ish.. i'm definitely not going to wake her up!

YES! He eats non-stop throughout the day but I dont mind if that means he is almost sleeping through the night!
Thank you!!!

I allowed DS to sleep thru w/o a feeding. This was how he learned day/night difference. During the day Id wake him after 3 hrs max

Depends on whether he is gaining weight appropriately. Ped said to wake him every 4 hours at first and then once he felt he had gained enough weight, he said we could let him sleep.

In the meantime, I would wake him if he isn't eating every 4 hours. He is really young, right?

Re: Newborn sleeping 5-6 hours a night?

DS was like that from day 1. HE ate non stop during the day. He would cry for another bottle about 1.5 hours after the last bottle. And very quickly was taking in 5+oz per feeding.

But he slept 5-6 hours at night it was WONDERFUL! I never knew what sleep deprivation was until he was bout 9 months old!..

If he is taking in alot during the day and is gaining weight I wouldnt worry. I would just welcome the sleep!

YUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As long as DC is at a healthy weight and is gaining and there is no health reason they should be getting up to eat...let a sleeping baby sleep and enjoy the rest!

Yes! Genevieve slept TEN hours her first night home from the hospital. I freaked and called the dr and he said to count my blessings Chat Icon I asked him if I should wake her to feed her and he said to never wake a sleeping baby. I know not everyone will agree with that, but she never lost weight despite her great sleeping!

DD slept like that from her first night home. She ate alot suring the day and then slept about 6 hrs/night her first week home and by 2-3 weeks old, was sleeping 7-9 hours/night. Anyone that looks at her can tell she's not starving Chat Icon

Re: Newborn sleeping 5-6 hours a night?

I think DD would probably sleep a stretch like that once a night if I let her but, I don't. Honestly, it's b/c I am EBF and have no idea how much she is getting so I get nervous. My ped also said the first month not to let her go past 4 hrs b/c they are not old enough to necessarily wake when they need to eat. But, that said, if she were getting bottles and I knew she was getting enough oz wise I prob would let her sleep!
