Sleeping 12 hours a night

DD is almost 14 mos and only sleeps 10 hours a night...usually 7/730p to 5/530a. Getting up at 5a is for the birds!

We've tried putting her to bed later, earlier, CIO...and still, 5a rolls around and she's up! She's clearly still exhausted, but fights to stay awake. Needless to say, DH and I are always tired Chat Icon

After reading many, many posts...I feel like she should be sleeping longer by now. Did this happen to anyone else? Will she gradually start sleeping later? Or do we just need to get used to getting up while it's still dark Chat Icon

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

Does she nap at all during the day, and if so, how much?

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

She's in daycare during the day...usually she'll nap for about 2 hours (12-2p). She's very stubborn when it comes to sleep. Even the daycare teachers said she fights them tooth and nail.

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

Sounds like my DD. She was on almost the same schedule as your DC, but now she goes in her crib around 8, falls asleep within 20 minutes and I'll be honest I have NO idea what time she wakes up because she recently started getting up and playing quietly - until 7:40 (yipee!!) I know she's not just waking up at that time because when I get up earlier she's up and playing. She's always so exhausted by 10am I have to assume she's still getting up around 6:30 or so. My DD is 13 months and this just started a week or so ago....

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

Does she have anything in the crib to occupy her? DD wakes up at 6:45, 7 am some days and I usually don't get her until close to 8. She plays with her stuffed animals.

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

I have the music part of the mobile still attached to the crib, plus there's always a stuffed animal or two. She rarely will entertain herself for long, once awake.

I neglected to mention, we're in a 1BR apartment...so, her crib is in the room with us. Which I think is a BIG part of the problem.

Good news is...we should be moving into our new home in February. Hopefully when she's in her own space, she'll get better. Although, I'm anticipating an adjustment period Chat Icon

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

Can I suggest that you not run to get her when she wakes up? Start by making her wait ten minutes for like a week, then 20 minutes, then keep going. She might just get bored and fall back to sleep. Also, do you think room darkening shades might help?
Ava is now a little over 18 months, and I'd say it took until last month for her to not need the instand gratification of mommy or daddy the second she woke up. She can easily entertain herself for an hour now without even wanting to get out of her crib. Try making her wait and see what happens. Hopefully it will get betterChat Icon

Oh wow, I didn't see this. We JUST moved from a one bedroom apartment a few months ago. We found that sleeping on the pull out couch was the only solution to all of us getting a good night's sleep. It totally s-cked, but if you can deal with it, sleep in the livingroom for the next couple of months!

I agree, my dd usually wakes up at 6:15 or so and does not cry for me until 7-7:15...she entertains herself for about an hour in her crib Chat Icon good luck

Re: Sleeping 12 hours a night

Thanks everyone. We just might resort to sleeping in the living room. I usually do let her cry for a little bit before I go get her a bottle, but since her crib is 2ft from my bed, there's only so much I can listen to.

We do have blinds on the windows, but not blackout shades. When DD wakes up it's DARK out...no signs of sunset.

We'll try to let her cry a little bit longer each morning and see if that helps...thanks again!
