Need to Vent Before I Explode
Today in my office I have heard the following comments made by the same person.
#1 - You know, they look autistic. You can tell something is wrong with them.
#2 - Special Ed man. F'in Special Ed.
As the human I am shocked at such statements. As the mom of an autistic child I think my head might explode.

Maybe educate him. At the very least give him a reminder that you have a child with autism and his statements are disrespectful to you. And if he doesn't know you have a child with autism this may be a good time to let him know so he keeps his ugly mouth shut!

I don't understand what is wrong with some people!
last wknd I was at the pizza place by the water, sitting outside and overheard a group on their lunch break talking awful too.

I am sorry, I have a son with ASD (severe end) and it is hurtful to hear statements like these. Also I've heard people use autistic as a insulting term like "stop being autistic" really? Ugh.

I am having an incredibly tough time imagining any kind of workplace conversation would include or be ok with these kinds of statements. I would really appreciate hearing the context because the statements are so difficult to read, I can't imagine how irate you must be listening to them.

Also being a parent of an autistic child, you need to have a very very thick skin. People are idiots and most of the time don't even realize they are being offensive. Every single day my daughter has something said to her from an uneducated fool. From the children that shy away to the parents who refuse playdates to the average person on the street throwing around the "r" word, it is very disheartening. There is a huge difference between awareness and acceptance and as a society we are are no where near the acceptance phase.

The first comment was made in reference to a photo that was on FB showing someone being attacked for no reason. I don't know what an autistic person looks like that you can tell there is something wrong.
The 2nd comment was made in reference to a stupid comment that my boss made.

totally agree with this. As a mother with a child with Autism, I would feel hurt. NO ONE LOOKS Autistic. I can't stand when people say they do look autistic, or oh they dont look autistic
