NO they were closed. they went Bankrupt! I swear im not smoking crack!
They were at one point closed.
But I physically passed by the store last week. There was TONS of toys/suffed animals/and other crap inside the glass doors on the side of the building.
They were closed at one point... but now it looks like they are VERY open.
Website also confirms it.

Re: Need NYC help again!
FAO was closed for a while but they are now open again, they are now specializing in more antique toys and stuff - they are no longer the biggest "mainstream" toy store.
As for getting around.
Take the LIRR to Penn Station. Get on the E-train going uptown to 7th avenue stop. You'll get out at 7th and 52nd. You can walk over to the Park at 59th and then over to 5th avenue entrance. There may be a close stop on the e-train (52nd & 5th maybe?). In order to get the R train you would have to leave Penn and walk to 6th avenue, which could work too and you get off right at 5th avenue & 59th street.
FAO Swartz is at 59th & 5th (across from the Plaza) and part of the GM building.
I believe Serendipity is on 61st street to 2nd avenue. Not positive though. I'm sure you could google it and gind out.
Easiest way to get around the city is. As the numbers go up (51, 52, 53) you are going North. As the avenues go up (5th, 6th, 7th) you are going west. It should help you get your bearing when you are walking around.

absolutely! Do the Zoo, come out at 59th & 5th entrance/exit and go to FAO which I believe is actually on the corner of 58th street and 5th avenue, the head over to Serendipity on 60/2.

No problem. I work in NYC and have clients in the GM building. Plus DH calls me a human map because I'm always giving out directions to everyone.
When I first started working / going to school in NY, my brother gave me the little east/west - north/south lesson and it helped tremendously. You get so turned around coming out of subways & buildings that if you can figure out where you are and what the next block is, you can figure out which direction you're heading in. Also a little pointer - 5th avenue is the dividing line between east and west. So W 59th street would be west of 5th avenue (the higher avenues like 6th, 7th, 8th, etc ...) and East would be opposite.

Re: Need NYC help again!
My SIL took my nephews to FAO last weekend, it is indeed back in action. So glad they have returned to specialty store status, hope it works for them.
Why do I always think Serendipity is on the west side near the planetarium?
