need ideas for a tattoo...
my sister and i have been talking about getting matching tattoos, since last summer. we want to do something to honor our mom... she's alive and healthy, but such a staple to us - our backbone, inspiration, our everything, i'm sure many of you understand. anyway, neither of us really have any ideas what to get... i was thinking of maybe incorporating a symbol for inspiration somehow, but i don't even know what it looks like. i'm sure we'll go check out a tattoo parlor and see what jumps out at us, but i thought i'd come here for some ideas as well. LIF ladies and gents are always the greatest with that so... anyone?

if you don't have any ideas... wait it out. I don;t think you should ever take opinions from others who barely know you when it comes to doing something permenant to your body. Wait until you come up with your own idea.

Re: need ideas for a tattoo...
I think you and your sister should design it together from scratch. Even if you have an artist actually do the drawing, you should both give the full input.
ETA: I just think that would be a nice way for you and your sister to do it together, and it will be unique and special.

i appreciate the thought... but to me, getting ideas here would be like looking around at a tattoo parlor as well... maybe something will jump out at me and i'll keep thinking about it. when something sticks in my head for a while and i keep thinking about it, that's when i know it's right. my sister and i will maake the final decision, i'm just looking for some ideas to work with... and there's such a vast majority of people here, i'd love to get some ideas fom some of them

is there something your Mom really likes?
Maybe if she loves hearts, you could get 3 small interlocking hearts or something like that...

Re: need ideas for a tattoo...
3 ducks? A mommy and 2 babies?
Is there a special memory you have of your childhood? A tradition or something special that she always did with you and your sister?

maybe you can have a floral design with the flower for the month of her birth, and next to it yours and your sisters flower.

Re: need ideas for a tattoo...
Do a search on Flickr and DeviantArt for "tattoo" and your keywords like "motherhood" or "mother" or "mom". While I think it should be something unique and something personal that already symbolizes your Mom, you can get some good basic ideas there.
Do you have a good, clean, reputable tattoo shop in mind already? A lot of them have MySpace profiles which include their artist's pages and pictures of their work.
My friend liked Kangaroos so she got a tattoo of a Mom Kangaroo with two little roos in her pouch looking up at her. I thought that was adorable. But it was something extremely personal to her.

Re: need ideas for a tattoo...
When I finish having all of my children, I told my husband that I want to get a tattoo on my upper back (near my shoulder) of tear drops...one for each child with their name to symbolize all of tears that I comforted.
So....along those lines...I was wondering about maybe a hand on your shoulder with her name to remind you of all the comfort and support she has provided you.

Maybe, along the flower idea, have her initials in a sun (or leave the initials out, and just have the sun represent her), and you and sis as flowers under the sun. Rainbow instead of sun might work, too.

Re: need ideas for a tattoo...
History
Triquetra is a word derived from the Latin tri- ("three") and quetrus ("cornered"). Its original meaning was simply "triangle" and it has been used to refer to various three-cornered shapes. Nowadays, it has come to refer exclusively to a certain more complicated shape formed of three vesicae piscis, sometimes with an added circle in or around it. It bears a resemblance to the Odin knot, or Valknut.
The triquetra has represented many things for many religions and cultures. It has been used as a powerful amulet since ancient times. To the Christians it symbolizes the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit. The triquetra shape incorporates the Ichthys (fish) used as a secret symbol by early Christians. To the Wiccans it symbolizes the triple goddess, or 3 stages of a womans life; Maiden, Mother & Crone. It symbolizes many things across many religions and cultures. The constant cycle of Life, Death and Rebirth; the triplicities of Mind, Body, and Soul; the three domains of Earth, Sea, and Sky; the Taoist concepts yin, Tao and yang; the tantric energy channels ida, sushumna and pingala; the Hindu trinity Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu; the alchemical concepts Sulfur, Mercury and Salt; the phases of the moon waning, full and waxing; and the Hebrew letters Mem, Aleph and Shin.
In the post-modern world it symbolizes the Power of Three lovely witches from the immensely popular Charmed on the WB. The unbroken circle symbolizes the essential unity of whatever triad is being signified by the three outer points and the central, curved triangle.
Triquetra, triqueta, trinity knot, triangle knot, celtic knot, all of these are names you will hear to describe this type of design. Many triquetras have an eternity circle to emphasize the unity aspect, but not all.
This is a little something on a trilogy celtic knot. Honestly the first thing that came to my mind was the "Charmed" tattoo. Where it represents an unbroken circle, eternity and the 3 of you. Pretty cool stuff!! Good Luck with your decision
