NB can't breathe? Scariest thing EVER...

This has happened 2x so far and DS is 19 days old:

First time: burping him over my shoulder after nursing. We stopped because I could tell he needed to burp. All of a sudden, I hear his breathing change to small squeaks. I look at him and he's staring blankly, he's limp, and his lips have a purplish hue. I jump up, start burping him hard, freaking out. All of a sudden he has a little burp, comes to and pinks up.

Today: he's in his swing, I heard the same noise. I run over to him, throw him over my shoulder, same thing.

Sometimes he doesn't burp good if he's sleepy after nursing.

I almost died both times this happened. I'm even shaking just thinking about it right now.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I'm so scared this is going to happen when I'm not around and someone doesn't react as quickly as I do. Or if I'm in the shower and can't hear his little squeak. Or if I'm sleeping.

That is certainly not normal and you'd better call your ped. He could have apnea or some sort of issue with respiration. I would call right away..they can check his oxygen saturation and probably do some other testing. I also would not leave him alone. Bring his councy seat into he bathroom when you shower, etc.

apnea was the first thing i thought of - if you tell your ped they should try to see you today. if they cant squeeze you in today, there are many walk in type places you can go to if you dont want to go to the ER

I dont know where you live but LIJ has an awesome clinic if you want to go there

Totally agree, hopefully you are calling the ped now. Especially if his lips turned purple. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This cannot wait. Please have you baby admitted to the hospital and tested ASAP! and invest in an AngelCare monitor to monitor breathing at night. Good Luck!

Re: NB can't breathe? Scariest thing EVER...

This happened to my dd at 4 days old...and i called 911. She was napping in the pack n play and i was watching her, thinking she was going to be waking up soon for her next feeding. I saw her wake up and look like she was struggling..I picked her up and she was like arms straight out not bending and eyes straight ahead not moving...lips turning a little blue...I call 911 they told me to use the syringe suctioner for her nose...at this point dh was holding her...I think she ended up sneezing and stuff came out of her mouth and she was fine...by the time the ambulance came she was ok...but we had to take her to the hospital for tests b/c of her age...I thought she had a seizure at first...anyway she didn't have a fever so she was spared a spinal tap...but she had urine culture, blood tests, ekg, eck, cat scan..all sorts of things and everything was normal...worst 2 days of my life. In the end i think either she was choking on formula from before she fell asleep or her nose was stuffed and they do not know how to switch breathing from their nose to their mouth at this age.

I would probably call the ped and see what they say.

ETA: an old post that i posted pretty much the same story...and some others experiences.

DHs cousin had a NB that had this same thing happen. Baby went to ER and it was determine he had severe acid reflux.

I'd definitely give the ped a call! Chat Icon

This happened to my DD when she was a newborn. She was diagnosed with reflux at the emergency room after I called 911 when she stopped breathing the 1st time. Her pediatrician confirmed this diagnosis and explained that newborns have a reflex to shut off their airway when something enters it. The reflux triggered the reflex. She was put on Zantac to decrease the stomach acid coming up.

This happened to my husbands cousins daughter as well, while she was sleeping. Thankfully, they had the angelcare monitor, and it went off, and her whole stomach was completely sunk inChat Icon Thank god for that monitor. She was diagnosed with severe reflux.

My advise would be to def. get either the angelcare or the babysense monitor. I have had both, and actually like the babysense better because it had two pads so covers more area, and also works on just batteries, so no plugsChat Icon

Re: NB can't breathe? Scariest thing EVER...

***UPDATE***

About 2 minutes after I posted this I thought to myself - what the hell am I doing? And I called my ped. Got seen in 30 minutes (thanks Midsuffolk Pediatrics!). After being examined by the ped and asked a million questions, it was determined that we needed to go to the hospital for further examining. We were a direct admit to SBUMC. We were breifly seen by the resident, and so far it sounds like reflux. They've got him on an O2 sat monitor and we're staying overnight.

I brought up reflux to the ped he saw last Friday for his 2 wk exam and was basically poo-pooed. He also hasn't gained as much as he should've so far (we're 4 oz behind schedule - and he nurses all the time!). I'm glad we're here and that we are getting this taken care of. I'll keep you guys updated!
