Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
we originally wanted Nassau since Dh worked in the city...but he decided to give Huntington a chance, since he started looking at how much more house you get for the money.
I don't think I could ever go back to Nassau. The driving alone would drive me crazy. Northern Huntington (North of Jericho) is much more laid back, it seems - I don't really go south of Jericho (even for work LOL)

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
it seems like so many of you picked nassau only because you work or need to be in the city. see we don't have that issue. I would really love nassau it just doesn't seem affordable and we would def have to make a sacrifice, because we would never get the land or house size that we can get in suffolk, I'm still so torn! thank you for all the advice
Can you guys recommend any area's in either nassau or suffolk that you love?

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
I grew up in Ronkonkoma and here I am still. I like it here, good central location near the train station airport and major highways. Smithown, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Holtsville, Ronkonkoma, Nesconset, are basically where we are looking. Based on location, schools and money I would prefer Sachem SD.

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
for nassau i grew up on the south shore so i am familiar with seaford, massapequa, and wantagh and know and like the area very much. it is a little bit more pricey however (or so i have found while looking)... for suffolk, FH's uncle lives in hauppauge and loves it. he pays very low taxes and raves about the Hauppauge SD. good luck!

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
I grew up in Nassau and honestly when looking for a home did not even consider it. I am in S. Huntington/Melville area and I love that I am close to everything, yet feel like I am in the country sometime when I sit in my backyard. It's less congested IMO and I never have to deal with the Southern State and that alone was enough for me.\

Nassau. Suffolk just seems so far
I like the location of Nassau, in terms of the city and commuting, but also getting off the Island when traveling anywhere!
yes I agree. I think the ppl are totally different too in Nassau vs. suffolk
we need to be close to the city bc of DH job

I avoid it at all costs...
I love where we live though in North Bellmore...the other towns around here that are great are Wantagh, East Meadow, North Merrick...
I loved Garden City but couldn't afford it...I also loved Port Washington and same thing...too pricey for me. I grew up in Huntington and the train ride from there was like torture for some reason? My commute is only 20 mins shorter but 20 times 2 is 40 mins a day saved...
Hmmm in Suffolk I like South Huntington by St Anthony's and then North North by town...Melville, Smithtown, Commack, St James, are all great as well...

We are in N massapequa and I grew up in plainview... being right on the border of both is fantastic.... we are close enough to the city but not so close that you get the city influence (if that makes sense)

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
We looked in both Nassau and Suffolk, but the one thing we knew for sure was that we preferred North Shore. The furthest east we considered was Northport and our cut off point going west was Lattingtown.
School districts were important to us as was property size (we were hoping for an acre). We also prefer established neighborhoods with mature trees.
We ended up finding a home in Huntington in the Harborfields SD. We're right on the Centerport/Greenlawn border, but we're only moments from of Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor and Northport Village.
We love it here. The Harborfields community, as well as the Huntington community, is very tight. We're considering moving out of state, but it's not going to be an easy move by any means.

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
both DH and I grew up in Nassau (south shore) Wantagh and Seaford. We lived in Bellmore for a little while before we were married and now live in Massapequa. Within the next 5 years, we plan to move back to either Seaford/Wantagh or out to Suffolk (not too far out)...
The South Shore is nice, very residential, lots of trees, good schools and close to shopping and major roads. It has more of a "small town" feel as comparred to some of the larger towns more north. Taxes are higher but that is due to less commercial and industrial in the area.
In Nassau, I would suggest
Merrick - Massapequa on the South Shore (Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa)

Re: Nassau or Suffolk and why
We briefly considered Suffolk, or I should say "I" briefly considered Suffolk, my DH was never really on board. He hated the idea of having to drive an hour just to get off the island (whenever we go on a ski trip, DH is always like, "See, if we lived in Suffolk, we'd have another hour to drive!) The only advantage Suffolk has is larger property size and more house for your money. I grew up in Queens and my DH in Nassau so we were both okay with small property and neither of us wanted to worry about maintaining a lot of land. Also, we like being close to both the city and beaches.
