nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
so here I am again, with a tale of woe lol
let me preface by saying, I know babies schedules etc are ever changing... totally fine with that. dd will be 9 months next week. she has NEVER been a good napper. as an infant she took 4 30min naps a day. then we went to 3. then when the 3rd nap became a fight, I went to 2 and I kind of did them at set times. 1045ish and 245ish, though I would tweek them 15-30min each way if I needed to. she usually takes 30min naps still... a "good day" is one 30min nap and one hour and 15min nap. she's NEVER napped longer than 90min. ever. I've done cio in the past for naps... and there have always been occasions where she'd cry for a few minutes before falling asleep, or "play" for a few minutes before falling asleep. well now, she is either taking an hour or more to fall asleep, or flat out refusing naps. she is a very good sleeper at night. she's down usually 6:30-6:45 for the most part; wakes for a bottle in the 5:45 area, then goes back down. normally until 7:15-7:45 although 2 days recently she slept until 8:30. I equated that with her not napping the day prior and making up for it. 2 days ago she was up at 8:30am. put her down for nap #1 at 11:15. she didn't fall asleep until 11:50, slept for an hour. then she took a 30min nap in the car 3:40-4:10. yesterday she woke at 8:30 again. put her down at 11:20 when she was acting tired. didn't fall asleep until 12:25, slept for 30min. she had a chance to nap in the car 3:30-4. she didn't. tried in the crib right after... she refused for 30min then I just gave up and took her out. so she napped a total of 30min yesterday. today she was up at 7:30 for the day. put her down at 10:30 for her nap. took her until 11:30 to fall asleep. 30min nap. I've tried putting her down after 2hrs 45min wake times - bc that used to be her "ideal" - it doesn't help anything now. the time she's spending in the crib not sleeping - she's not crying... an occasional whine but mostly just "playing" and practicing her new tricks lol I just feel like it's ridiculous for her to spend an hour in the crib 2x a day not sleeping. it shouldn't be taking her that long to fall asleep. does anyone have any advice for a first time clueless mom? is this just a regression that will pass? am I doing something wrong about when I put her down etc? should I transition her to one nap? she's always marched to the beat of her own drummer as far as sleep goes but, this is seriously driving me up a wall. i'd rather have her out doing something etc rather than just watch her on the monitor for hours not sleep

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
Mabye give her more time before putting her down for a nap. Maybe 3.5 hours after wake up. Also if she is happy in her crib let her stay there and play. She is using that as quiet time. Unless she is very fussy all day long because she isn't getting tired. My older ds was always a cat napper than probably around the age of one or after it started taking one good nap. My 2nd ds was a terrible napper and really only napped in the car or the stroller.
Will she nap if you bring her for a walk?

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
I don't really have advice. DD is usually a good sleeper but lately it's been a biotch getting her to nap. And then out popped a tooth... or she has an ear infection... so many thing throw them off.
If she's SCREAMING crying for awhile, I give up and take her out and go about our day until next time she looks tired. If she's playing independently... I let her.
Also, this is the age they go through separation anxiety pretty badly. DD would sleep wonderfully on me but if I tried to put her in the crib she'd sit up and scream in my face.
Hope things get better.

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
My DD is the same way! She was always a bad napper.
Sometimes I think there's something psychologically wrong because she wont let herself sleep even though she is so tired. I tried everything (letting her watch tv, laying with her, CIO, driving around)
A couple months ago I actually called a sleep coach. The idea of paying someone to teach me how to get my kid to sleep was ridiculous but I was at the end of my rope.
The main thing she said was to be really consistent with the same routine for nap & bedtime everyday so they feel comfort by knowing what's coming next. We wash up, get changed, read 3 books, sing 2 songs then in the crib. The first month she screamed & cried, it was torture I went in every few minutes to calm her down but didn't pick her up & eventually she learned to put herself to sleep. There are still some days it takes her an hour to fall asleep but eventually she does.
She is 2 so it was really hard. Good luck, I know it's so frustrating! Hope it gets better!

I agree. If I followed your post correctly, it sounds like she is not getting sleepy until about 4hrs after she wakes, so maybe put her down closer to the 3.5 mark?

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
this is just all of a sudden. like within the last week, maybe 2. her ideal wake time was 2hrs 45min and then all of a sudden she just will not nap, or she'll play around for an hour before falling asleep. I've tried all different wake times, it's the same thing. I was looking to see the wake time I gave her plus how long it took her to fall asleep, and try just under that total wake time amount the next day. made no difference, she would still just remain awake for an eternity in her crib. and would her wake time all of a sudden jump from 3hrs to 4hrs overnight? bedtime is no issues at all... we have a very consistent evening & bedtime routine and have for a very long time... and we have a nap routine as well. she KNOWS what's coming lol she cries the second I walk her into her room and then again when I put her in the crib. for about 15 seconds. then she's fine and just plays or whatever. I do leave her there for however long it takes for her 1st nap... bc shes not crying... but it's becoming an issue bc she's either flat out refusing a nap a day and getting so overtired, at night she's falling asleep on her bottle etc... or the amount of time it's taking her to fall asleep is pushing her nap times so far back, it's messing with bedtime and she NEEDS a consistent bedtime. she really does only take 30min naps for the most part, so I can't be messing with her overnight sleep.

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
At that age, from what I've read, most babies are taking 2 naps a day, at around 9 and 1. I think you're little one has a pretty late wake up. Going back down after a bottle and sleeping until 8:30 could be interfering, especially if she's going down for the night at 6:30/6:45. That's 14 hours of sleep right there. What I would do is (sorry to sound like a know it all. My first was a TERRIBLE sleeper and I've read every book and have done my research). When she wakes up at 5:30, leave her until 6 and then get up for the day ( if she can stay in her crib that long) first nap should be around 9 second nap around 1, bedtime around the same time as it is now, although it will get later as she gets older. I know a 5:45 wake up is super early but I think that's how you'll get her to nap. I aleays got my kids at 6:30, even if they woke up at 6. They were good about laying or playing in their cribs. But of course, if they were screaming, id take them out and sometimes have a snuggle in my bed. My dd dropped her 2nd nap at 10 months and napping all together at around 2, so I know how frustrating it can be. My son was an awesome napper. Neither of them STTN until 9/10 months!! Good luck!!

yup, read the healthy sleep habits book... been there, tried that lolol thing is, 99% of the time, even when she naps, she only gets two 30min naps a day. that's very atypical for a baby - but it's always been her. so she makes up for it at night on occasion, I guess. the 8:30 wakeups happened 2x. typically she's up for the day 7:15-7:45. and even with an early bedtime, she still has plenty of time to get 2 naps in, bc they are only 30min each... kwim? that 9/1 nap situation (well actually it says nap #2 should start between 1-3pm) is accounting also for babies who sleep for an hour or two at a time. eta- there's been times in the past where I've woken her bc I thought she was sleeping too late, and there have been times that I've just kept her up in the morning like you suggested. she is MISERABLE all. day. long. seriously she's happier not napping all day, than to start her day off on your terms, as opposed to hers.

My dd was very similar. She's now 5 1/2 and STILL gives us a hard time about sleeping and is still an early riser. I would just ride it out. She might be the type of kid who doesn't need a lot of sleep or go according to "the books".

ITA to agree with this.
MrsKelly - My DD had a similar schedule to yours which lasted from 3 till 6 months. She would go down at 8pm, sleep till 5-6am, nurse and go back down for another few hours…till 9-10am! Then she would do two 40 minute cat naps a day. Like I said this lasted from 3-6 months. Then one day she started sleeping longer and stretching her first feeding of the day out till 7-8am. Now she makes it 11-12 hours and we stay up for the day when she rises after 12 hours sleep. I do not let her sleep past 12 hours and will wake her up in the morning if I have to. Slowly she started stretching her naps too. The average is 1 hour each but most days I get a 2 hour and then a 1 hour or vice versa. However every now and then I will get 30-45 minute nap but it is enough to refresh DD and she is happy and content.
My DD is usually always happy so I also stopped sweating the short nap thing. Some days she needs long naps and some days she does not. It is frustrating that she is so unpredictable and that I can't get things done but oh well…I had to let it go. Trust me it took a long time for me to get over that!
So for you I think you should definitely keep her up for the day after that first feeding. Feed her at 5:45am…and keep her up for 2-2.5 hours. Then do her first nap. Then keep her up for 3 hours and give 2nd nap. And before bed keep her up 4 hours. Its called the 2-3-4 schedule. Be consistent with this and commit to it for 1 week or more. Do not let her sleep past 12 hours and stay strict with the schedule. It will suck getting up so early but she may start to stretch that first feeding out. It will take a bit to reset her clock but her body will adjust and eventually she will need longer naps. I think you def need to keep her up and stick with it a few days. Even if she is cranky…just power through. Keep her distracted if she is fussy, take her on a quick walk, feed her some puffs, walk her around the house, etc. Just get through the crankiness any way you can and keep her on the 2-3-4 schedule.
Also another thing you can try is - when she wakes up from a nap after 30 minutes..leave her in the crib. Even if she starts fussing or crying a bit, leave her in. I did and still do this with DD. Most of the time she falls back asleep! Sometime she wakes up for 20 min and plays and then falls back asleep! Also sometimes I thinks he poops and goes back to sleep lol.
Also the car naps can be throwing her off. I know you cannot always avoid them but my DD sleeps like crap in the car. The max my DD sleeps in the car is 30 minutes…even if I am driving 2 hours! Also I noticed if she does car naps 2 days in a row, and then by the 3rd day back in the crib she sleeps like crap. It just throws her off. And it may be throwing your DD off too. So when you are doing the 2-3-4 schedule…try not to do car naps that week. If she is looking tired…bang on the dashboard to keep her awake till you get home. If my DD falls asleep for 10 minutes…she thinks it was a long nap and is rip roaring ready to go lol. But prob is she cannot make it to bedtime on a 10 min nap lol.
My only other tip is to give bottles right before the nap. I started doing this around 6 months too. I used to do Eat, Play, Sleep but then just stopped. I stopped that routine when we started solids bc I could not figure out how to get all the food in, etc. So now she gets nursed right before her naps and bedtime. I think it gets her comfy and cozy and it is just part of her routine. Hopefully I can crack this habit when she turns one but I will deal with that later. For now it works!
Anyway this is just all my random advice and I am not expert but hope it helps somewhat!

Re: nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
Mine wake at 5:30/6 then go back down at 8/8:30. This nap is key for us and I try putting them in at the first sign of tiredness so they aren't overtired. They sleep about an hr if im lucky then eat at 9:30 then 12:30 and nap again after that for an hour if im lucky. Then eat at 4:30 and usually 30-60 min nap no later than a 6pm wake up and they are good. Then they get a bottle at 7:30, bed at 8-8:15 depending on how they seem. Sometimes they don't seem tired so I give them til 8:15.
They cry for a bit at all naps but settle within 10 mins. If I put them down not tired or overtired it aint happening. If they took crap naps all day I'll go run errands after their 4:30 bottle so I cant get a nap in the car. Even if its 30 min it gets them to bedtime better than no nap unruliness.
At this age there is so much to do and see and they don't want a silly ol' nap. Pshh!

I have no issues with her 30 minute naps. that has been her since infancy, I stopped sweating it LONG ago. she wakes up happy and refreshed, it's totally fine. (and trust me, I left her in the crib all the time after her naps to see if she'd fall back to sleep, when I was sweating it - she never did - even now, I don't rush right in to get her, she's happy in there). i'm also perfectly fine if she falls asleep in the car... it was only the one time, recently. I am able to transfer her if need be, but - whether she sleeps 30min in the car or her crib, it makes no difference to me. a car nap isn't messing up her schedule bc she's not the type of baby that would be sleeping 2hrs at home in the crib instead, kwim? my issue was why all of a sudden, like over night - she went from taking a max of 15min to fall asleep to now taking an hour each time. I guess I need to just keep playing around with her wake times to find what works these days.

At this age there is so much to do and see and they don't want a silly ol' nap. Pshh!
that's what i'm leaning towards. she just learned to sit herself up on her own, and she's starting to pull up in the crib. I guess she's just more interested in practicing her tricks. i'm hoping it's just a phase

I say leave her in the crib if shes is happy. Its quite time. Can you try to give her a bottle right before nap time. That used to help my son. He's 2.5 now and on most days refuses to nap.
Edit: I just read your last post. I find that when I push a nap time back a tiny bit and give my kids something to eat it helps.

Gotcha. I was actually thinking about you again this morning and wanted to come and give new advice….leave everything as is haha! Don't keep her up in the morning….esp if you said she is not happy all day.
So anyway I say put her down a little later…maybe 15-20 minutes later than normal? She may be going through a sleep regression of sorts or separation anxiety. This happens to a lot of babies at 9 months. Hopefully it is just a phase! Good luck!

nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
My dd is 9 1/2 months and sounds so similar to your dd. She also is a 30 min napper, and like your dd very very rarely gives me a 'whopping' hour or hour and a half, but has never ever napped longer than that. And it's always been a fight to get her to nap. The only way I can get her to sleep is mostly by nursing her to sleep and when that doesn't work I have to rock her afterwards. Sometimes she falls asleep in the carseat, and like you, I don't mind because she wouldn't have slept longer than 30 min anyway, so its no big deal. In the first few month she used to nap around 4 times a day, 30 min each time. But as she's gotten older she's dropped the amount of time she spends napping little by little. Now at this age her typical day goes something like this: asleep for the night around 8 or 9, awake around 6 or 7 am, so usually a total of 10 hours. Then a half hour nap around 11 or 12 and another half hour nap around 4 or 5. And that's it. Once in a while if she's had a lot of extra activity she'll surprise me with an hour long nap. And usually when she does that she won't even take her later nap. She'll just stay awake til bedtime. My dd is a very energetic baby and it sounds like maybe your Dd is too. I don't think all baby's need to same amount of sleep. Some might need those 2-3 hour naps but my dd seems happy and energetic and refreshed on the amount of sleep she's been getting so I stopped worrying so much about how little she was napping. I decided I'd rather let her play and have fun with her than listen to her crying in her crib for an hour plus waiting for her to fall asleep. Then when she's good and tired ( I can tell she's ready to nap when she gets cranky and crying) she goes down for her nap pretty easily. If I were you I'd probably space out your dds naps more. It sounds like she gets lots of sleep at night so even though she's showing signs of being a little tired a couple hours later she's probably not quite tired enough to actually want to stop playing and go to sleep. I think as they get older and can do more things like crawling and exploring and playing, they want to keep going. That's how my dd is. When I try to put her in her crib when she's just rubbing her eyes while playing she screams her head off. But I've found that when I take her out and put her back with her toys she goes right back to being so happy and alert and will sometimes go another hour or two or even more before she really wants to sleep. There are the days when I get nervous because we had a lot going on and now its 5 pm already and still no nap for the day. But then she'll just take a late nap and sleep a little later the next morning. I still wish sometimes she could just be a great napper but since she's seems to be content I've decided to stop fighting it. Of course you know your dd best, so you have to do what works for you and her. But it sounds like you're saying she seems kind of happy not napping so much so maybe she just doesn't need that many naps. Plus it sounds like she gets plenty of sleep at night too. Good luck!

nap regression? what am i doing wrong? please help
Oh and I just wanted to add that people keep telling me that once she starts being really active, crawling and walking etc. she'll start napping longer because she'll tire herself out more. So that's what I'm holding out for!

Yes it feels like we need to re-sleep train with every new trick! Once we get it back, they will do something else or get sick or cut a tooth.

they sound VERY similar. i'm glad to know i'm not alone in this world lolol the 30min nap thing doesn't faze me... I just wasn't understanding why overnight, she went from taking no more than 15min to fall asleep, to over an hour. she sleeps a lot at night, so I assume she makes up for only getting a total of 60min naps through the day. I just felt like, at barely 9 months old, if she's been up 3.5hrs, it shouldn't take her another hour to fall asleep but she had just taught herself how to sit herself up in the crib, so maybe she was busy practicing that, for the week. yesterday and today she went back to taking about 15min to fall asleep.

Too much sleep at night. Can't expect kid to sleep all night & all day. Put to bed later or wake earlier. 2 naps at 9 months is great. Our DC went to 1 nap early... and that nap is at 1PM.
DS will skip his nap if I let him sleep in... at 3 years old. So, I wake him!

I always thought 12 hours at night is typical for this age. she goes down 6:30-7, is up at some point for about 30min for a bottle/diaper change and then up for the day normally 7:15-7:45. and since her 2 naps are typically only 30min each, I certainly never thought I was expecting her to sleep all night and day. every book I've read says typically children take 2 naps until well after their 1st birthday and *most* babies don't only take 30min naps. I kind of figured that even if some only take 10-11 hours at night, her getting about 12 is making up for her nap length during the day.

As a PP said, I think that morning bottle is throwing her off. At that point, she has been sleeping 13-14 hours, so it's not surprising she fights that nap. I might push that nap back a bit and just aim for one really good nap.
With her sleeping that many hours at night, I think it might be easier to do 1 nap more central to the day versus two little ones.

she doesn't get 13-14 hours of sleep at night. there were 2 days when she got close to that... but the days prior, she hadn't napped at all so i think she was just "making up" for it. on a typical day, she's down about 6:45 and up at 7:30 for the day, which is close to 13 hours, but there's a break in there where she's up for a diaper change & bottle. so essentially she prob gets about 12hrs of sleep at night on average.
i would totally go down to 1 nap, instead of 2 little ones, if she was going to take a GOOD nap. but 99% of the time, she will only nap for 30min. and i just don't know if that's really enough for a 9 month old

Even 12-13 hours is a LOT. I would definitely try and just push that first nap back - if it is taking her an hour to fall asleep, she is not tired when you are putting her down. Hopefully if you push that nap back it will sort of merge with the other one and hopefully produce 1 really good nap.
There's no magic answer, just have to keep tinkering. It's possible she is one of those children who sleeps so well at night that naps just won't be that great.
