Nanny $ situation question
Background: i was planning on stopping working and needed someone for a few weeks during transition time. one person i interviewed couldnt do many of the dates i needed her but the person i ultimately hired was able to all but 1. The first person asked if she could do that one day. she did. she was fine.
Currently: i ended up scheduling about80 days of work over about 8 months. i usualluy work 1 day a week and over the summer will be working most of those days.
this girl i have now- she is OK. sweet, and shows up on time. but anything above takign care of the children she is very inconsistent. i asked her to do things like adding diapers to the diaper caddy, cleaning up after play and meal time, filing nails, changing baby sheets, and putting away clean bottles. i dont think that is a tremendous amount of work. i pay her exactly what she asked for and she has been with me only about a dozen day if that.
Situation -she asked for a raise yesterday based on need. her performance is inconsistent and the other person i hired previously for about $5-10 more per day i could get and is SO much better. i wasnt plannign on lettign this person go but every day she is here its somehitng else. she put bottles together with out nipples, she put the bumper on upside down ( 3 weeks in a row), she doesnt clean up after she feeds the boys ( she thikns she does but its SO messy when i come home). she doesnt fill both diaper caddys. then she tells me she is bored during nap time.
thoughts on how to handle?

Re: Nanny $ situation question
Well, i can tell you i have been through it all with nannys...lol..i had a situation similar and i just ended up having to let mine go because she didnt take good care of DD, she was always by my pool , wore her bathing suit over etc...here is what i figured out...Utimately, for me the most important thing is DD..but, when you pay a reallly good salary, it is nice when you work an 8-9 hour day to come home and have the bottles cleaned and things done semi ok, lol..my previous nanny put the bed sheets on inside out, complained constantly about silly things... I provided:lunch, well, most meals and all that i asked of her was to clean bottles as she goes along, do baby laundry once a week and just take care of DD...If you are unhappy, let me say this, there are fantastic ppl out there and so many people really need a job period right now...It was horrible having to let someone go, trust me, i felt dreadful but if she is not the right person, i would move on and go with the one you really like

Re: Nanny $ situation question
Did you write out a SPECIFIC list ??? I am a firm believer of giving the person the benefit of the doubt. I mean is she just kind of like F it I am not doing it...if so I would let her go BUT now that you hired her...you should work with her if she is willing to do the things you ask of her.

Re: Nanny $ situation question
How much are you paying her?
If she's good with your child I would try to work with her.
Good luck!

Re: Nanny $ situation question
I agree with pp, if she's good with your children, I would work with her. Let her know the inconsistency, and give her a chance to correct it. Personally I would not give a raise unless she's done what you've asked, which is reasonable and perfectly within nanny duties.

Re: Nanny $ situation question
Oh, I forgot the $$$$ part...if you took her because she was 5 bucks less then the other nanny and now she is asking for that 5 buck and you are thinking "well the other ones better"...that to me that would be unfair to her. Adjust the pay based on what YOU think. Honestly, if you dont want to give her more or only want to give 2 bucks more...that is her perogative if she wants to stay or go.

Re: Nanny $ situation question
Thanks all.
The reason i chose her was b.c she was taking classes that i was able to make my work schedule around. the one i liked better wanted more hours and i was afraid would be looking for more and would leave. now over the next 3 months i have a lot of hours and out of the blue the girl i liked called and asked if i had any summer work which i potentially could. she originally was 3-$5 more per hour which added up quickly, but said if i had anything she was flexable on hours and salary. i always liked her better. the girl i hired worked for me for one day and then seemed so interested in working for me and kept in touch and was so sweet when i had more hours i gave them to her. but she seems complacent now. i also think a riase should be based oin time served or merit not need. for her experience i think i am paying her fairly but more importantly i am paying exactly what she wanted 3 months ago.
the girl i have that i dont love, i thought was nervy asking for more money after only working a few days and never went above and beyond. i had to writ out detailed instructions for everything for her. i checked. she worked 10 days for me over 3 months. she didnt forget to do things she is just very sloppy. i can possibly tell her to be more consistent and in mayb3 30 days we can revisit the raise? or i can just go with the girl who actually is very good and is more than happy to work for me for 3 months.
i just wanted perspective to make sure i was being fair and to understand if others thought working for 10 days and asking for a raise was out of line and if the task i asked her to do were too much.

Re: Nanny $ situation question
I think based on your post it sounds like you are much happier with the one that isnt currently working for you. You have to do whats right for your family bc you also dont want to 3 months from now question your decision again. In the end you are paying someone for your needs and they dont sound like they are being met. Being that you made a detailed list and tried...I guess for me it would be over.
