My name is Patricia and I cant tell you how many random people call me "Pat". I HATE that nickname (just for myself mind you. I dont mean to insult any Pats out there).

I do! If they've introduced themselves with the shorter name or if I am good friends with them it's just easier.

I use Em for Emily, Kerr for Kerri, Mich for Michele, Meg for Meaghan....yup I'm THAT person

i usually call them what im introduced to them as, however, i'll usually create some sort of nick name and ask if it is ok to call them that.

I would never take it upon myself to shorten someones name, unless they told me to call them that.

I wouldn't, because I am Jennifer and I hate when people automatically shorten it to Jenn. It drives me nuts, especially because I don't use Jenn myself.

Funny 90% + of responders on these thread said they would never do it. Then how come everyone I seem to be around does it? Don't you notice in 'real life' people do it all of the time!

I never do unless I've heard them being called that or they've introduced themselves by that name. People do that to my DH all the time. He wants to be called James and people still call him Jim even though he's never called that.

Professionally I always introduce myself and sign everything "Jennifer" but once people get to know me they always call me Jen and I am fine with that. But I would never do it unless they intro'd themselves to me like that or after a while it was obvious everyone calls them that.

I only shorten someone's name if i know them really well or if they sign their email with a nickname or shortened version of their name. everyone shortens my name to just Em which is what i'm used to. i actually think it sounds really formal when someone calls me Emily.

My sons name is James and we call him James. Drives me nuts when people call him Jimmy.

I have the opposite problem....My name is Christine, but I very rarely use it. My emails are signed Chris and people insist on calling me Christine and starting an email addressed to Christine.
Just don't get it!

I would NEVER do that. If you introduce yourself one way, I would never assume it's ok to call you something else. Just see what happens if you call my husband James

No. I calll them the name they introduce themselves. My son is Patrick it irks the hell out of me when someone calls him Pat or Paddy.

I don't do that unless they sign their name that way or I get introduced that way. I just feel like it is over personalizing with someone you don't know

I cannot stand when people shorten my name, especially when I did not grant them the right to rock my nickname(s). Nance, really has me climbing the wall. it's the worst. I only call people by their full name, unless they tell me otherwise and sometimes, even then I still will call a Mike a Michael.

I call them what they get introduced as.
My son is Christopher - & when he was born I said " His name is Christopher - I do not want him to be called Chris!" I even told his teachers at school " please do not call him Chris"
The whole family and everyone close to us calls him Christopher- others take it upon themselves to call him Chris!! It's like nails on a chalk board!

I don't unless I know the person really well. Some people at work I call by a shortened form of their name, but they do the same to me.

Once I know the person is fine with their name being shortened I do. But if I know the person does not like it, I never will

A few called my husband "Tony" and he absolutely HATES it.....he always corrects them!

Only if they ask to be called something shortened. I wouldn't choose a nickname for someone without asking.

i hate when people shorten my name or give me a different name ex. chris, tina, chrissy really bothers me. i really hate when people call my husband "bill" i just say "who are you talking about?" his name is will or william either or dont call him bill or billy. this is why when we have kids i refuse to use that name.
as for me shortening other peoples names i dont do it unless i know that is the name they go by.
