Name spinoff...do you
shorten people's names? For example, I work with an Andrew on a daily basis, chatting mostly through email. In all my emails I call him Andrew, that is his name. He hates Andy, I asked so I know. Would you automatically shorten someone's name? Patricia to Pat, Thomas to Tom...etc.
I only do it if the person signs an email Steve for Stephen.

I only do it if I am introduced to them as Tom, Jim, Kim, etc
Or if they sign with the shortened name

I would NEVER do that. If you introduce yourself one way, I would never assume it's ok to call you something else. Just see what happens if you call my husband James

People call me Kel all the time...totally fine...
BUT, if I am just meeting talking to someone for the first time or have no type of relationship (casual or whatever) it bothers the hell outta me...
For instance, when we were getting our wedding album done the consultant kept calling me Kel over and over again like we were BFF's, pizzed me off completely...

Re: Name spinoff...do you
I'd like to add, though, that I do not mind if people I know shorten my name. Most people call me Rach or Rae. I don't care. I find it weird if people who I don't know do it, but I still don't mind it.

Same here. I hate when people take it upon themselves to call me "Coll". That's not even a name!

I don't do that since my name is long and EVERYONE shortens it! That is why I added a hyphen. People still don't get the idea.

Re: Name spinoff...do you
I actually tend to do the opposite!
Everyone called my FH Tony when we met but I called him Anthony, and sometimes Anthony Joseph.
I worked with a Josh, and I was the only one who called him Joshua besides his mother.
I hate when people shorten MY name so I guess I overcompensate. lol

The same thing happens to my sister. She's Sarah-Beth, not just Sarah. People have a hard time understanding.

Re: Name spinoff...do you
I have been a victim of this myself. My full name is Katherine, and people assume my nickname is Kathy. So annoying! Because of this I am always sure to ask what someone prefers to be called.

in high school we had a classmate named James - one of our teachers insisted on calling him Jim, even after he corrected her! it must have been so annoying to him

only if they say to do so. I hate when people that don't know me do this to my name. They think they're being friendly when they call me "Terri" - meanwhile, if they KNEW me, they'd KNOW that I HATE that nickname!
SO annoying!

Re: Name spinoff...do you
I used to do it on occasion in emails at work, but I got a few responses from people correcting me. One person actually has "Daniel, not Dan XXX" in his signature.... Now, I always use their full name, or their official email address name (if a person's email is a nickname, I figure it's safe to assume they're OK with that name... ). Luckily, my name is Shawn, so I've yet to find someone who can abbreviate that...... Although, I have been told "Shhh" on occasion. Maybe they weren't trying to quiet me, just call my name... hmmmm..

No, not unless they say call me Jim, instead of James. I hate when people shorten my name and call me Jenny...it makes the hair on my neck stand up.

yes, I shorten names. Susan = Sue, William = Bill, Kimberly = Kim
etc
I once dated a guy named Stephen. he HATED when anyone called him Steve. I once saw him make fun of someone elses name when they called him Steve

I hear ya! It's my biggest pet peeve as well. I hate when they shorten Gabrielle to Gabby or James to Jimmy or Matthew to Matt or Nicholas to Nicky or Amanda to Mandy. If people wanted to call their son/daughter Matt, Jim, Gabby, Annie, Joey, Nickie, that's what would be on their birth certificate!
