My son hates his car seat...
Does anyone have any tricks to make our driving trips easier? Unless he is sleep he fusses, screams and get mad that he is in there. This morning wasnt even in the car seat for 20 minutes then he started.
At 1st, i thought it was the carseat, but its not. He just doesnt like being in there.

Re: My son hates his car seat...
DS used to hate it. Unfortunately, it's life. So I ignored it. Now (2.5) he will sit in the car for hours.
I guess it helped that my sister lives 2+ hours away and we go there at least once a month. It has forced him to have patience in there.

Re: My son hates his car seat...
My DS also hates his car seat. He does not like to be restrained. Screams as soon as the straps are closed. It makes going out very difficult, especially alone

Re: My son hates his car seat...
so this doesnt go away?
DD is 6 months old and has hated the car seat since birth. I figured she would eventually out grow it, but 6 months later, no improvement. Unless she is sleeping, she will whine, fuss, cry, tantrum. It makes going out so much work....

Re: My son hates his car seat...
Is he still rear facing?
My son who just turned 15 months hates being in the car. It's like I'm torturing him. I just wrote a post last week about switching him forward but the girls here talked me out of it. I am keeping him rear as long as I can without driving myself crazy listening to his screams.
It's really really rough, so I know how you feel!

Re: My son hates his car seat...
DD is 18 months old and still rear facing and has always hated her seat she's only good when she's sleeping in the car. Even if its a 10min drive she screams or cries. I think once we turn her around she might be happier (or so I hope)

Re: My son hates his car seat...
Have you turned him around yet? Maybe he's having issues with being rear facing. Try turning him and see how he is. I know everyone will try and convince you to keep him rear facing until he's 18 but honestly, I would try it and see what happens. My DD was getting very uncomfortable because she's tall for her age so we switched her around at 14 months old.

I know this is a hot topic... rear facing vs. forward facing... but I respectfully disagree. I personally would not switch my DC forward facing earlier than the recommendations simply because it will make them happier or more comfortable....especially when the risks include a potentially broken neck.
My DD is 13 months and rear facing and tends to cry when we get in the car. I give her the paci, give her a toy and hope for the best.
If she starts crying, honestly, I try to turn up the volume to a child friendly song and sing really loud in the hopes that she will calm down! Or maybe my horrible singing will make her scream even more!
Or I just grin and bear it and hope that I will be parking the car soon.

Re: My son hates his car seat...
This might be considered bad parenting but I purchases a television for my car and pop in a dvd and kids are quiet the whole car ride.

Re: My son hates his car seat...
I echo everything Jerseypanda said.
Most kids go through this about this age. You also could check the angle of his seat if he is still RF. You don't need to have a 45 degree angle for a toddler, you can put the seat more upright.'
Try to engage them in helping you buckle the seat, distract them wtih a toy. Sing a song, make it a game etc.

Re: My son hates his car seat...
My DD is 8 month and screams bloody murder every time. It helps sometimes to make her laugh and play around right before I put her in so that she is laughing as I am buckling (sp?) her in. She usually still whimpers but is ok. If she wakes up mid car ride (I drive 1 hour every day to and from work with her in the car) I sing children's songs to her and she usually quiets down pretty quickly. I also installed those car seat/stroller toy bars/toys so that she can play with them while in the car seat. That helps a lot!!
