My NB had to have emergency surgery last week
I've posted before about DS's reflux and about having to literally hold him all day and sleep with him upright in my arms because he projectile vomits at least once a day. He was on Zantac, had the dosage increased twice but in the last 2 weeks the vomiting got worse. There was more of it and it became more frequent, so we took him to the ped who referred us to a GI specialist. She prescribed us Prevacid but sent us up to Columbia to have an ultrasound to rule out Pyloric Stenosis, which means that the muscle that connects the stomach to the small intestine is essentially overgrown and is blocking the passageway between the two. So, turns out, my poor DS had it...which means he's been struggling with it for at least the past two weeks (it can begin to grow at any time but apparently usually begins to overgrow at around 3 weeks). He was 7 weeks last week. Anyway, so his passageway was almost COMPLETELY blocked by this muscle which explains why my poor baby could not keep anything down. So they wanted to operate on him right away.
DH and I nearly had a heart attack on the spot...how do you operate on a 7 week old baby?!?! But it had to be done....we BAWLED like starving babies...the whole experience, handing him over to the surgeons, was awful...listening to him scream. But, I have to say that you know you're in excellent hands at Columbia, they're the best around so we weren't worried about the outcome, just about DS being in pain. But he went through like a freakin champ and now, I swear to god we have a whole new baby. He hasn't thrown up once and though this might sound like no big deal to some....he can actually lay down on his back. We could never lay him on his back before, even for a second because he'd throw up his whole insides practically. He's slept through the night (ON HIS BACK, NOT ON ME ) since we've been home...he's happy and smiley and not gassy and uncomfortable all day long like he used to be. We used to walk around all day pounding gas out of this poor child. We're soooo happy he's home safe and sound all better.
Here's a crappy camera phone pic of my poor baby in his hospital gown and IV tube in his hand.

Re: My NB had to have emergency surgery last week
Thanks ladies. Shane's lost alot of weight now due to the vomiting itself and having to withold almost two days worth of feedings before and after the surgery, so he's got alot of catch-up work to due. Good news is he's eating like a grown man. Bad news is my boobs cannot keep up and they feel like they're going to fall off. He's literally sucking me dry. It's ok though, I'm just glad he has his appetite back and can keep it down, it's awesome!

Re: My NB had to have emergency surgery last week
I delivered my DD at columbia b.c they thought she would need surgery before she could be fed at birth (luckily she didn't end up having the issues they thought) and Columbia has the best pediatric surgeons and pediatric GI doctors in NYS. He was in excellent hands. Who was the surgeon?
I so sorry that you all had to go thru all of that. 7 weeks is too small to have to have any child go thru surgery. I hope he has a speedy recovery. For him and your family.

OMG, wow! So glad everything turned out ok. Maybe he really will do so much better now that you know there was an actual cause for the reflux.
