I was pretty young when I first heard it. And I was like "um. ew. She's just my friend. She's not my girlfriend. what the hell are you talking about?"

I rember the first time I heard it, I was under 8--My grandma said it to me when I was sitting out back at the piinic table with friends. It was something like, "Did your other girlfriend go home" or something.

The friends that were there were all "ewwwwwwww. . she said girlfriend. . .", and to this day, I think of that encounter everytime I hear it in that context.

I don't use the phrase--I know too many lebians-- it confuses me to use GF to mean a non-romatic partner.

I say girlfriends and friends...but mostly if I'm referring to a group of friends that are all women, I usually say "my girls" or "the girls"...

I always say it.

As far as I know, I've never confused anyone into thinking I was gay. I know lesbians that use girlfriend to describe their friends too. When describing their romantic relationsihp, they use "partner" or "wife"

I either say girilfriend or "the girls". If I am talking about one girl, then, yes, I refer to her as my girlfriend.

No I never say that because to me that implies a lesbian partner. I have heard people say that a lot and I have to pause for a second because I think to myself "arent they already married to a man" Chat Icon

I never use it. My grandmother refers to her (female) friends as "girlfriends" -- I always thought it was an old lady thing.
