"My girlfriend"
Do you say this referring to girls who are friends?
I remember the first time I started hearing this I was really puzzled. When I hear "girlfriend" I think think lesbian lifemate. I wouldn't call my guy friends my "boyfriend"
Do you use this term? If so, does it apply to all girls who are friends, or only close friends? Or only groups "My girlfriends." What's the difference between saying "My friend" and "my girlfriend"
I'm sure I've used the term a handful of times but I still can't get used to it. Please shed some light!

No! I totally don't use it, and I feel like I'm in the minority.
It's just not something I've ever said, so starting to say it now would be weird.
I prefer "lady-pals"

I never use it. My grandmother refers to her (female) friends as "girlfriends" -- I always thought it was an old lady thing.

I was pretty young when I first heard it. And I was like "um. ew. She's just my friend. She's not my girlfriend. what the hell are you talking about?"
haha.
My guess would be that it's your close friends, usually in a group?
Why do you need to distinguish the gender of your friend? Especially when used in sentences like "My girlfriend, Sally bought these great shoes" obviously I know Sally is a girl. So i figure there's some nuance I'm missing.

I use it here and again. It doesn't bother me per say but I get irritated when someone tries to be all cute and is like "Ohhh, your 'girlfriend'???". Get over it!

Yeah I know, that's stupid. Clearly if you're married this person isn't your girlfriend in that sense of the word...

I hear more and more people our age saying it, especially in LI. Coming from grandma, it makes sense, because in her time, "girlfriend" would never mean anything but friend.

Re: "My girlfriend"
i use it.
quick funny story: i was in DC, visiting a female friend who was living there at the time. we deicided to go dancing. i was dancing with a cute boy, i had to say something to my friend... so i tell him that i had to find "my girlfriend" to tell her whatever it was i needed to say.
he later told me that he thought he had hit the jackpot with me because he thought he was getting two for the price of one!! silly boy! he ended up not get ANY!
maybe i should re-think my use of this term

Not sure what it all means - just an observation because I'm a language/word junkie.

Re: "My girlfriend"
Occasionally I'll say "I'm going out with my girlfriends" or "one of my girlfriends said....". Most of the time though I just say "friend" or "friends".

Re: "My girlfriend"
I just say friend. I really don't think to anyone else it should matter if my friend is male or female. And I would think that from the context of the sentence they may be able to figure that out anyway.

Re: "My girlfriend"
I always thought it was stranger when people would say "My one friend"
As in "My one friend went to the show and loved it."
You only have ONE friend???
