My cat got out this morning UPDATE: Found!!!
Update: Found!!! He was behind my landlord's couch the whole time. For three days. He never made a peep or moved. For three days.
I'm so relieved!
Because my DH is an ass and doesn't know how to close doors. I'm so angry at him right now. We've had so many fights over him being careless (leaves windows wide open and we don't have secure screens, leaves Advil lying around, leaves things that the cats could eat like ear plugs) and all he has to say is I'm overreacting and a worrier. I usually just check everything, but I do miss things sometimes.
The cat (he's one year old) was running around around 5 AM like cats do. I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. Around 6.30-7 AM I noticed it was particularly noisy, so I went up to open the door to see what was going on in the hallway. That's when I saw the door open.
I live in a three story house with an apartment on each floor. The guy downstairs is the owner and also a plumber. His workers usually come over at 6 and load up the trucks and leave at 7. I've searched inside my apartment, searched the basement completely, and walked around the neighborhood. DH is out now knocking on doors asking if we can look in their yards. I put food out by the front door and by my door to the apartment. I'm not quite sure he got out the main door as it was closed for the most part, but the guy downstairs said he would have seen a cat run out. The cat is pretty fast. He's also pretty shy.
I'm just so sad. It's cold and rainy out and I'm afraid he'll never come back. 
I have put signs around the area and put notices in mailboxes.

Oh no! Something similar happened to me too. DH forgot to close the back door in the morning before going to work, and my dog got out. By the time I got up, I realized my dog had run out. We didn't have any fences in that house so I had to called my job to tell them I was gonna be late, and go around my neighborhood looking for my dog, playing he didn't go to the main road which was very busy. I was able to find him thank God! And of course DH got a piece of my mind!
I'm hoping u can find ur cat too

Hope he comes back. Are you sure he got out?
One time I swore ours was gone. He tapped a ceiling tile in the basement and got in between the walls. I kid you not. They do crazy sh*t!
I searched high and low and thought he was gone for sure. Then I heard a faint meow. Sure enough, in the walls.
Another time, Max was no where to be found. We looked everywhere again. Didn't see him for 24 hours. He was in the basement in the couch. Like inside the recliner. He gives me agita!

our neighbors cat jumped out their 2nd story window and was missing for a week. she put the cats blankeet and traps outside and one night i saw a cat in there. it was theirs.

I know someone who had a cat missing for 3 weeks. They put out traps, used blankets, used litter and food. The cat came back and was found in the trap.
Good luck, I can only imagine what this feels like. This is my worst nightmare.

I hope he comes back ASAP!!!
Here are some other techniques:
-Put his litter outside
-Put catnip outside
-Put his food outside
-If he responds to the sound of a toy, the scent of a toy, etc., shake it outside/put it outside.
-Put something with his scent or your scent outside.

Thank you everyone. No sign of him. I am pretty sure he is not in the building at all. We have looked everywhere. It's killing me that I don't know where he is tonight. To say I'm angry at DH is an understatement.

Look on the lost pet forums on Facebook. My boys let the cat out one day and we didn't notice until 10 hrs later. We were searching the neighborhood and then decided to check online. We found a Facebook page of lost pets. Someone posted about a cat that fit ours' description found a few blocks away, so we called the lady. She didn't have him anymore because she drove the cat to meet up with someone else who thought he was hers and he wasn't. She gave us that lady's number. Dh drove 3 towns away and there was our little a-hole, chillin with this cat lady... He had quite the adventure that day.

I hope he turns up soon! Cats are very good at finding their way back home. When I was a kid mine came back home months later. We had lost all hope but there she was filthy and knocked up but otherwise fine! Try flipping the whole house over again. Check the basement again. Check to see if there's any hollow parts behind or inside sofas, walls, under claw tubs, sinks, etc. My cat used to go under the old-fashioned claw tub we had in a brooklyn apt, wedged herself between the back wall and the floor. They are very good at getting into anything we couldn't even imagine. Is there anyway he could've snuck into one of the other apartments in the building and the tenant doesn't realize? Agree to check fb too!

could he be locked in the basement ( if you have one), my dog use to get locked in the laundry room or garage.
In a closet ?
