This is exactly why I did NOT want to be married in a church. Actually, my Dad thinks the money pays off the little boys.

BUT FMIL (the hypocritical Catholic "at her convenience") insisted!

It just realllllllly pisssses me offfff

I was thinking of it the other day. This Sunday, my priest said, if you dare to put 57 cents in the collection, then I ask you to go sit in the back of the church and do it and hide in shame. People were like ***???

And IMO, priests like this are pushing people to leave the church in droves. There is growing frustration among Catholics with how the church handles many things and statements like this one just add fuel to the fire. I get angry for the families that have been victims, but I also get angry for the good priests, who do a lot of great work, who are being perceived as molestors or co-conspiritors.

I am not as generous as I could be with church donations. Instead, I choose to give directly to schools or charities that are helping the poor. I know that much of the collections go to maintaining the local parish and its services, but if I said all of the molestation charges didn't affect how I donate, I would be lying. Chat Icon

no offense nic, but the actions of a sick few, is not indicative of the ENTIRE catholic church.

If you got food poisoning from McDonald's, would you condemn all McDonald's everywhere?

No, I'm talking about the money comment.

AND every priest at my church gives a "money homily" every week.
I can't take it anymore, I don't attend.

I am very much a Catholic - but I just DON'T agree with many decisions the institution of the church makes.

I was raised Catholic and so was DH. What dpli wrote above is one of the many reasons why we attend a protestant church now. Although, pastors are FAR FROM PERFECT, at least the pastors are married and there seems like there is a lower percentage of these kind of things happening.
We feel like we made the right choice for our family.

if you don't like your church, switch churches

and if you don't agree with MANY of the decisions, then perhaps you should evaluate which religion you want to follow

i mean, i disagree with a few, but not enough to consider switching

but, if there are many you disagree with, it's time to look elsewhere

sorry to be harsh, but this is a sore subject

My view on this is that, they should allow the priests to marry. It's sad that the actions of these sick men have put such a negative stigma on the Catholic church and I think religion in general. Chat Icon

I disagree, Sonia. Marriage does not cure pedophilia.

No, it does not but I think the lack of any sexual contact IMO has a lot to do with it.

I have a question... the Catholic church fully supports their preists, right? housing, clothing, expenses. Do the Protestant churches support their preists the same way? And if they have families, does the financial support extend to them, too?

Wow, I didn't realize how different parishes could be. Mine is very welcoming of everyone and they never mention money, just pass the collection plate.

A few weeks back there was a homily on how the church needs to change it's ways and welcome divorced catholics back. There's even a movement among some Catholics to let priests marry and have familys, since it's not "The Word of God" that dictates they be celibate, it was a Vatican I mandate to help the priests "focus on the vocation."

I don't think this Pope will make any sweeping changes, but hopefully he'll make some moves in these directions.

Yes, I am a Protestant and it works the same way. The church provides housing & salary for the pastors.

I don't know about that- if i was denied sexual contact with a man I'd sure as hell be frustrated, but I would never reach for a child. Chat Icon I think something is mentally wrong with them, to desire kids.

Being able to marry might entice some men who were thinking of the preisthood, but wanted a wife and family, but I don't think it solves the pedophilia problem.

Not harsh.
I am very happy with my religion, not happy with "administration" and "adaptation".
I understand its a sore subject, but its also a personal decision.

We could go back and forth all day...in the end, its just a personal decision. I do what's best for me, you do what's best for you. We'd never get anywhere duking it out.
