Re: Moms with DC having "popular" names...

If you love it, i'd go with it, who cares about anything else.

I have a very popular name growing up, there was always at LEAST one other classmate in the same class throughout my whole school and college life that had my name. I didn't mind, i love my name, and my mom didn't spell it the most popular way.
The only thing that stunk was that since i was always in the back of alphabet, my last name initial was always on teh back of my name for the teachers.

I never realized that Lucas would be somewhat popular but I have met so many little boys with that name now.

I didn't know at the time but ultimately I don't think it would have changed my decision because I love the name.

DS is named Michael (which has been popular for years). I do not regret naming him Michael since he is named after DH.

When I named my daughter Jaedyn it wasnt popular at all. (she's 9)..now that its getting popular I have looked back and wondered if I would have named her something different or not...Nahhhh I love that name..

When we named Caden we knew it was popular but we didnt care. We felt there was so many other popular names out there now that it wouldnt make a difference. If we cared we could of gone with PLAN B which is soooo NOT something you hear every day..but DH chose not to.

No...Nicholas is one of many in his Kindergarten class, but it is fine with him and me.

He calls himself Nick or Nick K. Chat Icon

As a teacher, yes, I do have years where I have several kids with the same name, sometimes in the same class.

The only thing that gets confusing is when each one has a different spelling. For example, a few years ago, I taught several Katelyn's.

I teach high school and have about 120 students. I had at least 4 Katelyn's that year but always had to remember who was:

Kaitlynn
Katelynne
Caitlyn
Katelyn

I guess that's why I tend to favor traditional spellings for names.

So far this has only happened with girls names.

DD's going to be the kid in the class that everyone says Gillian with the "G" and the other child will be the one with the "J" if that happens. I love how kids do that Chat Icon

I couldn't care less if a name is popular or not. I love the name Ryan and that was our first choice for a boy name. But it's also a classic name, that is timeless as well.

Well, my girls are Katherine and Abigail.

Katherine is traditional, yet not popular, so that doesn't concern me...I'm pretty sure she'll be among very few Katherines in her classes.

Abigail, though, did concern me...especially since it wasn't my choice of name, it was my DH's. Of course once I made the decision to use that name, I'm not going to regret it, even if she is one of 3 in the class. (I don't know anyone else IRL who has this name and there's only a couple on here. So far, so good Chat Icon)

To me there's a difference between traditional and "trendy" and even though Abigail might be popular, it's certainly not trendy. For MY children, I WOULD avoid trendy names.

I love Matthew (his first name) and Christopher (his middle). No regrets about either name--I didn't know they were so popular when we picked them, but even so, we decided to stick with them.

Re: Moms with DC having "popular" names...

Nope, don't care.

I didn't even realize how popular it was until I saw it on one of those "most popular boy name" lists.

Personally, I don't know anyone named Ethan. But I'm sure DS will be with quite a few when he goes to school.

I can't picture Johnny with any other name, so no i don't regret it!

The name is very common but not so much anymore..I don't know any other boys his age named John.

It is my husbands name, as well as FIL and I thought it was a nice tradition..although everyone has diff. middle names which I love!!

I agree with this exactly. I think certain names are trendy and almost define a generation and those are the ones I wanted to avoid (not that there is anything wrong with them, just not for me). Names that are classic and timelessl I never have a problem with.

Well, there weren't too many Andrew's around 4 years ago, but there are now! I still love the name. I believe its always been pretty popular and that didn't dissuade me at all. Go with a name you love.... Who cares about anything else! Chat Icon

Re: Moms with DC having "popular" names...

Ella is getting very popular, which is annoying since we'd loved the name for years and never heard anyone use it. But I don't regret the choice - its the perfect name for her.

There were always a lot of Lisa's in my classes, but it didn't bother me. I hardly know any now.

What name are you thinking of now?

Ditto. We chose Ryan before we even knew it was in the top 10. And even though there's another Ryan in his daycare class, there's only ONE Ryan in my mind Chat Icon

I had a very rare name in elementary school and high school, I was the ONLY one. I always knew I loved DD's name and hoped DH would too and he did. Very happy with the decision even though it has become popular.

If I really loved a name that was super popular it wouldn't stop me from naming my child, but, I do love that DD's name is not popular right now, and I'm hoping it doesn't become popular too Chat Icon

Re: Moms with DC having "popular" names...

The name Grace has a very special meaning to me...

It was by God's Grace that I became pregnant, was able to carry my DD full term with out a heart problem presenting itself until the very end of my pregnancy. All of you have no idea how grateful I am that I was even able to have her.

When ever I went to my cardiologist's office I would see kids, teenagers, 20 somethings and 30 somethings in the waiting room. Almost all of them, with the same condition that I had, but their L-TGA was WAY worse than mine. The fact that I was able to live to 31 w/o a surgery (I had it when I was 31), get married, have a child, work, be self sufficient...I defied the odds. I KNOW it is through God's Grace that I was able to do all of these things, thus I named DD Grace. DH and I did not care that there would be 15 Grace's in her class, or play group. We knew that that name was special to us and we did not pick it b/c it was popular, KWIM?

ETA: If you love the name...go for it! Who cares???? My name is Dina and it was butchered all through my school years and into college. I HATED having an "original" name. My teachers would call me "Dinah, Dana, Diana, etc, etc." NEVER D I N A.

Plus, they NEVER said my name on romper room and magic garden. Chat Icon Plus, I could never get anything personalized like those fake license plates they put on your bicycle. After YEARS of therapy, I am slowly getting over it...
