Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I am really freaking out about sending my dd to Kindergarten in 3 weeks. I can't believe its almost here. I get so sad thinking about not seeing her for 6 hours a day. I know she has to go to school but my heart is breaking letting her go. The last 5 years I've spent everyday caring for her, protecting her, and now I won't be there for it all. Its really killing me. It doesn't help that I'm sending my youngest to preschool too. I'll be all alone for 2.5 hours 3 days a week. I have no idea what I'll do with my time lol. Does/did anyone else feel like this? A lot of my mom friends are so excited for school.

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
this was me last year... And I almost held him back!!! We went through a lot last Spring and I wasn't ready to give him up... He had always been home with me and now I was sending him off to school for 6 hours a day.... In the end, it was the best thing for him... Today he was telling me he misses school... I am now not ready to send him to 1st grade...

I'm in the same position. DS is going to K and DD2 is going to a class 3x a week for 2 hours. I'm happy but sad all at the same time

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I am not btdt and my dd is only 3 and not going to preschool this year, but we want her to go to preschool somewhere when she is 4, but I can understand how you feel because I am already dreading sending her to preschool and missing out. I hate the idea of her being in school and not being able to witness everything and hear all her little comments to things. I want to home school, but I won't. I am an elementary school teacher (or was before a SAHM) and know how fun and important it can be for the kids. I still can't help but feel lonely and sad for myself when she does go!

Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
My kids aren't going to K until next year but the twins are going to pre-k this year and my youngest is going to pre school. I'll have 4 days a week 2.5 hours a day to myself. I'm more anxious that my baby is starting school than anything. I know I'll keep busy for those 2.5 hours and they'll go quickly. But I get your anxiety about sending her to K. I have a whole year and I'm already freaking out about them going to K next year. I lay in bed all night and think about it. What if they want to separate the twins (this is my biggest anxiety because I do not want that and they do not want to be separated), what if they need me, what if another kid is mean to my kid and they get upset, what if my kid is mean to another kid, what if something happens? I literally lay in bed at night thinking these things and I have a YEAR before my kids go. It's always harder on us than it is on the kids

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I'm not going to lie, it was REALLY, REALLY hard sending my DD off to Kindergarten. It's honestly broke my heart and I cried that ENTIRE day and EVERY day after for the first week. It was such an adjustment for me to go from being with her 24/7 for 5 years to then sending her off, not knowing what she was doing all day, and just hoping she was happy and being well cared for. It was a VERY difficult time for me when she went off to school BUT the good news is, in time you get use to it.
After seeing how happy she was and how much fun she was having in school it made it a lot easier to put her on the bus every morning and I moved past the sadness of it all. I also felt like it made the time I did have with her when she wasn't in school that much more precious and special. She's starting 2nd grade this year and it's amazing how different you feel once they have been going to school for a while, the sadness and stress of it all is gone and now I'm just excited for her every year.
Hang in there, it will be sad but you will get through it!!

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I feel VERY much the same I am so upset about kindergarten being a full day thing. When I was a kid I only went half day and figured it would be the same for my children. I'm also a SAHM so going from being with her 24-7 to missing that much of her day is just hard. Meanwhile DD is so excited to start school. lol. Go figure. For us, however, kindergarten doesn't begin until 2016 so I decided to put her into part time preschool this year so that the transition will be easier. I just imagine her going from being home with me all day to being in school 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week! Ugh. So hopefully doing preschool 3hrs a day, 3 days a week will help us both transition. But regardless, I'm DREADING her beginning preschool even. I know it's the best thing for her, that the transition is important, and that she needs to begin kindergarten on time (emotionally, socially, & intellectually she's just READY). But it's still hard for me. I'll die the first time she gets on a big yellow school bus. Oh Lord - I'm becoming one of "those" parents. lmao. I just hate sending her off into this scary world.
(ETA - this is one reason I'm truly grateful for the age gap in my kids. DS is due in December. So sending one off to school, I still at least have a few years before the other grows up too. lol. I keep thinking how hard it'll be when graduation and college comes around. At least there will be time between each. Ugh. All this growing up nonsense. haha. I don't like it).

So funny you said this because I was SO thankful I had my DS a few months before my DD started school. It was nice having one home with me still, I liked having the distraction. It was good to be able to focus on him all day and give him lots of attention and love, it made happy. If I didn't have my DS when my DD went off to Kindergarten I don't think I would've have survived. The house was SO quiet after she went to school, even with a newborn in the house.

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
Omg I'm having a breakdown about this. I work and he goes to daycare but I'm so worried he won't know what to do and they won't help him like they do at daycare. It doesn't help that he has to be bussed to aftercare and I'm afraid he will get lost. I keep picturing them letting him out of the classroom and him just being completely lost not knowing what to do. I'm very stressed about this!

I feel the same. I'll still have my youngest- but my oldest is going to K, my middle will be in pre-k 3x a week for 2.5 hours.
To make matters worse, our district did some major re-orginization so the teachers she met last year through the school's pre-k are no longer there! And there's no orientation, just a day to drop off supplies when the teachers "should" be there. It makes me so angry. We won't have the teacher assignments until 8/19.
It's such a mess and DD is so nervous

Thanks for the honest reply. I know it's going to be hard for me. Just thinking about it the tears start to flow. I'm glad to hear it got better for you. I hope I'll get use to it and my dd will like it.

Yes, I feel very much the same! DD will begin kindergarten when DS is around 9 months old. I think it will help a lot to still have one home with me for a good while. Even just preschool - it gives me anxiety to send her even just part time. But DS will be here within 3 months of her start date so I know things will be busy and that will help as well. The timing wasn't planned by any means, but I can see such great benefits to it - both for me and the kids (what you said, about the one-on-one attention).

I could have literally written this post word for word.
The difference in teacher/student ratio from his daycare to kindergarten is HUGE. There are so many more kids per teacher in K.
It keeps me up at night.

I get exactly where you are coming from. I worked when my oldest went to K and was dropped off by bus at a babysitter. I trusted the sitter but she had other kids to watch so she couldn't watch for the bus everyday and I always would look at the clock when she would get off the bus and cross the street. It just killed me that half part of the year (as she went half days). Now she is the most independent teen (she gets up and goes any place on her own, will call places up on her own (kids do NOT call on the phone anymore so this is a big deal to me lol) and did great.
We as parents are more worried than the child is. They need to get out and away from their parents though as our job is just to raise them so they CAN live out in the world

I'm in the same boat but we actually held my son back last year bc he wasn't ready for K. Now he will be 6, yet it's still tugging at my heart. I can't believe the time has come that he will be gone all day. I've been with him 24/7 the last 5.5 years. I'm nervous on how he will handle the adjustment too
My youngest who just turned 5 & we are withholding is doing prek too 3x a week. I'm not as nervous with that

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I know exactly how you feel. I was heartbroken when both my kids went to kindergarten and I know I will be dropping them both off at school in a few weeks- first grade and fourth.
I think its completely normal. These are our babies - our reason for being. So to entrust someone with them for a full day is hard. I have to say that I did cry every day for the first week but once I saw how happy DS and DD were when they were at school it made it a little easier. They really have SO much fun in kindergarten. What made it easier for me was to volunteer in my son's classroom every week to read with the kids and he LOVEd counting down the days until I came in. I also did a special craft with the class every season. His teacher was very good at communicating so if DS came home with s story that I was wondering about I would shoot her a quick email and she would always respond that evening.
Its hard but it will become a new normal for you and your son will do great and so will you - it might take some time but you will get there - also I find that I really really really appreciate the weekends and holidays more during the school year as I get the kids all to myself

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
You know what really bothered me about DS gking to K last year? Having to leave him at the front door to fend for hinself. I was scared he'd get lost or scared in the big halls all alone without me. First day i actually walked the length of the front of the school to the K wing and peeked into the doors to make sure he got there! But after a while i just let him go and then there were friends saying HI and he'd run away from me to them and just yell BYE MOM!! It hurt my heart but at the same time it filled me such happiness that he was ok!
I think its harder for the mommies than it is for the kids lol!

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I'm definitely with you! I have 3 kids (5, 3, and 1) and all have come to daycare in the preschool where I work since 3/4 months old. So even though I work and they are in daycare, I see them constantly. Now my first baby is going to be in kindergarten and it is breaking my heart. This is his last week in daycare and I've been so emotional with all his "lasts" this week. He loves learning new things and I know he is going to be so happy in kindergarten. It is tearing me up though. It feels like it's the first (of many) big "letting go" we have to do as parents.

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I will have both girls in school full time come September. I'm both looking forward to it and dreading it. I know dd will rock kindergarten, but she's my last baby so that part is bittersweet.
I'm just hoping to get a routine down quickly to make the morning go smoothly. I don't go to work until 12, so I'm not worried so much about that. Just lunches and backpackes, homework, Etc..

Re: Moms of kids entering Kindergarten or btdt
I am so deep in denial that I couldn't even really respond to this post for days because I didn't want to even think about it.
DD has been in daycare since 8 weeks old for 10 hours a day- 3 days a week. I work FT.
So it's not the being away from her that bothers me so much. It's the thought of her going on that goddamned bus. Like I put her on a bus and I ASSUME she made it to school? I ASSUME she found her class? I'm sorry but she's a baby. No. I can't
She has been in the safety and warmth of the most amazing daycare center for 5 years and the thought of her leaving there is really, honestly enough to make me want to just home school her.
I can't.
And now I'm crying

I know EXACTLY how you feel as my kids were in daycare from 12 weeks on. When my oldest was going to half day K, I had to find a sitter. The first one, I came home and cried my eyes out as I was so used to her going to daycare and being with people I became to know as friends and people who cared for my child. I wasn't feeling it with this sitter. Luckily my neighbor told me about her sitter and I was able to use her for the year. I was much more comfortable with her. It is hard but so is every.single.stage of your child's life. I can assure you, it does NOT get any easier as they get older.
