Yes I would do it in a heartbeat. I've always wanted to go back to school but because I already have a ton of student loans I've never done it.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I'm 32 been out of school for 7years now and so far my plan is to go back for my BSN (bachelor's in Nursing) in the next 2yrs. I am an RN already though (have my associates) and fully plan to utilitze the tuition reimbursement my job offers. I think eventually I would like to go into Nursing education for my Master's.

And just as an FYI nursing is a very popular 2nd career choice. I see new grads in the late 30's, 40's even 50's just getting started. You're young you're only 30, go for it!

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

i think it would depend on the field and if i could do classes on line. I dont think i can handle classes after work and dealing with a baby.

i've had friends older than you start nursing school and they were happy with their decision. but nursing school isnt easy and pretty intense.

if it were free, i could do it online or around my schedule and didnt interfere too much with my family life, i would take some classes in maybe accounting or design.

if it was FREE, I would take the time to do whatever moved me. even if it was to get a new bachelors degree. I would NOT waste any time, especially time away from my son to get a masters in something that I would not put to good use or enjoy. BTDT, without a child, and I would never do it again.

so, to sum up. HELL US take advantage. and HELL YES, make it something you will LOVE, even if it will take longer.

ITA!

One of my good friends is going for nursing right now at Stony Brook - she's going full time but, she's 35 so 30 isn't too late - especially if it's something you enjoy

Another friend graduated 2 years ago in her 40s and got a position right away and loves it.

How about a masters in education? Those summers off are so tempting to me!

(Almost a Mom)
Nope. I wouldn't if it meant taking away time from your DD. I believe there are VERY few degrees that directly lead to jobs after the age of 22. (exceptions being a teaching degree, nursing degree, etc. something that will completely change your field in which a degree is required.)

I know too many unemployed people with Masters degrees...

I would - but I like taking classes - I just finished my 2nd masters degree a couple of years ago. I have to say that now with a toddler and one on the way I think it would be really difficult but worth it if it's a change of career or something you are really interested in.

Yea, I just don't know if changing careers, like going into nursing or physical therapy, is something to consider this late in the game (I'm 30 and have been out of college 8 years). I could just do masters classes in something like accounting online...

At almost 36 years old, I have learned that life is too friggin short to be unhappy. I try my best to make myself as happy as I can every day. If your job is not fullfilling, then I would definitely sit down and create a plan for change. Especially when DD is young, I would bang it out and get the schooling done as soon as possible. This way, you won't miss out on her activities when she gets older and remembers that you are not in attendance, and if you and DH decide to go for #2, then schooling will already be behind you!

30 is not too old! I am set to retire from the police department in 7 years when I will be 43 years old and embarking on a totally different career at that point. I say go for it! We should all strive to, "Do what you like. Like what you do!" Chat Icon Chat Icon

If it were free, I'd be more likely to do it. But if I had to pay for it, probably not.

Well, think of it this way - You're 30 years old - You have AT MINIMUM 32 more years until you retire .........that's a lifetime.

Do you want to be miserable for a lifetime??

I did a complete career change at 35 so you are not too old.

I would go back to school it in a heart beat now again if it was paid for.

Lactation consulting is a great field or anything healthcare. I am contemplating nursing or physician assistant. And I am almost 41.

Definitely if I got motivated.
I have 95% of my Masters and never did the externship (the only thing between me and my degree) - someday I'll get the fire under my arse.

I would take the opportunity!!

If I was in your situation, and considering nursing, I definitely would. I think it sounds like a great option for you, and I think you would be so happy with it. It will be hard, but will pay big dividends. And as others have said, healthcare is where it is at.

Right now I just work for the controller's office in a University... we deal with finance, A/P, accounting, etc. It would benefit me to take masters classes in accounting, but I'm not that interested in it.

I'm really interested in nursing b/c then I could go into lactation consulting, etc. I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to go back now at 30... has anyone done something like that around that age? I can't go full time.

I am 34, married, work full time and have an almost 3 year old, I have a 4 semsters left for my RN ( I go nights part-time)....WISH it was for FREE, so I say YES...if it's something you WANT to do..it's a lot of work, FM if you have questionsChat Icon

I worked in admissions for a majornursing school on LI, you wouldn't believe how many 2nd career people we admitted every semester. Go for it!

GO FOR IT!!! Yes, I would definitely do it. I am a high school counselor and I do love my job, but if I was able to go back for free and I was looking for a change I would definitely go for it.

It is definitely worth it to go into nursing. When I was in nursing school, there were so many people who were going for a second career. Many of them were 40+ years old.

My job is paying for me to get my masters now. I am taking it very slow, 1 class a semester, b/c I dont want to get too overwhelmed with work, school and DS.

If nursing is was you have your heart set on then I would go for it.

Good luck!

If you are interested in it, go for it! I see only positives...regardless of what age you finish, you'll be that age anyways, and its free. An education is an investment so you won't lose anything by going...WORST case scenario you stop, but if its something you want, go for it!

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I am considering a change. I'm 37, have a 3 yr old DD. I had a very succesful career in sales before choosing to be a SAHM. I have bachelors and an considering going back for a degree in nutrition. I'd really like to be a nutritionist. I feel I can't be there for my family the way I want to if I go back into sales.

If I could go back and $ wasn't an issue I'd go part time.
