Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

If your education was FULLY paid for, would you consider a total change in careers? Say you are around 30 years old and it could take a while to complete and take you away from spending as much time with our kids... would you do it?

If you already have a Bachelor's degree, would you just go for a Masters in something you weren't that interested in and do it slow (1 or 2 classes a semester at night or online)?

Did I mention it would be FREE?!

I'm torn.

not if its something I wasnt interested in.

ETA: Obviously if it was something I really wanted to do in the future I would by all means go for it!

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I would definitely do it online. You work in a college, right? Even if you stay working there, there are tons of positions where you are required to have a master's or a doctorate. I teach MBA classes online, and I am able to do it after DS goes to sleep at night. I don't think it would take time away from your kids, and it could really pay off for your future.

What career change are you considering? As much as I'd love to say it's never too late to make a change, I couldn't make a change at this point where I'd be making $30,000 starting as entry level in another field.

Yea, I just don't know if changing careers, like going into nursing or physical therapy, is something to consider this late in the game (I'm 30 and have been out of college 8 years). I could just do masters classes in something like accounting online...

It depends what field I was in.

Just to let you know, I have a BA in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Public Administration. I work in corporate legal/finance sector. I was thinking about going back to school for nursing. The schools told me that bc I already have a BA, in order for me to obtain a BA in Nursing, all I would have to do is complete my pre-requisites and take all the specialization classes. So instead of going to school for another 4 years, I would most likely complete the degree in 2 years if I went full time. And then I would go on to Masters in Nursing. I can't do it bc the program is during the day...but I wish I could do it.

So it really depends on whether or not you like the field that you're in. I think either way for you its a win win situation...they're paying for your school.

you should definatly consider a job in nursing. YOu'll always have work, that's for sure! and there are so many different things that you can do with it. totally worth the time it takes to get your degree.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

Right now I just work for the controller's office in a University... we deal with finance, A/P, accounting, etc. It would benefit me to take masters classes in accounting, but I'm not that interested in it.

I'm really interested in nursing b/c then I could go into lactation consulting, etc. I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to go back now at 30... has anyone done something like that around that age? I can't go full time.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

3 years ago I was laid off. I was a mortgage underwriter and when the industry tanked so did the salaries. To take another job made nosense because my salary would've been cut in half, I'd be working to pay daycare and working a lot more hours. My DH works for a college so I'm back in school to finish my BA and get my masters in education, I go FREE, but I have always wanted to teach. I also took a waitressing job to help pay the bills. I didn't go back to waitressing after DD tho. I now have a PT job back in the mortgage biz and go to school PT. It'll be another year or so til I can start subbing, but its not easy to get a teaching job right now anyway so I'm ok with it.

30 is not too old! I know lots and lots of people that have done masters degrees past the age of 30 in things like nursing, counseling, library science, law degrees etc... I know nursing would take awhile but for free I would not turn down something I am interested in as a potential career down the line. go for it!

In NY you'd need to finish all of the science prereqs (within the past 5 years, so even if you had taken them as part of your bachelor's degree, you'd need to take them again), then do either an Associate's or a Bachelor's degree in nursing, and most likely would need to quit your job to do your rotations in the hospital. It could take you up to 10 years doing a class or two a semester. Yes, it can be done.

I'd probably suck it up and get a Master's in Accounting or HR or an MPA.

For free I most probably would. I am toying with the idea of a masters and career change or expansion but tuition is definitely one of the things holding me back.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

if it was FREE, I would take the time to do whatever moved me. even if it was to get a new bachelors degree. I would NOT waste any time, especially time away from my son to get a masters in something that I would not put to good use or enjoy. BTDT, without a child, and I would never do it again.

so, to sum up. HELL US take advantage. and HELL YES, make it something you will LOVE, even if it will take longer.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I would do it in a heartbeat. I am currently paying to go to school while raising my children because I nver had the opportunity to do it when I was younger. Not sure I would want to do it in an area I wasn't interested in but if itwere free, why not?? Education is something that will always benefit you. I do not see how there would be a negative aspect to getting a higher level degree.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I would totally do it! I have a BFA, which is not very marketable - neither is an MFA, so I wouldn't go on for that.

I have thought about going back, I would love to do something like forensics or research science. I started out in Physics in college and got bored so I went into art, I love puzzles and figuring things out, I probably should have stayed in physics Chat Icon

If you are interested in nursing I don't think it is too late at all! My sister is 33, she went back 2 years ago to become a nurse and is now working towards a Masters in nursing.

Re: Moms... if you could go back to school for FREE and get a bachelors or masters degree, wwyd?

I went back to school a few months before I turned 30 to change careers. It was a long road for me, because of the discipline I chose to study - I pretty much had to do a second bachelors from the beginning, since the coursework was so different from my first degree. I would think the same might be true for nursing, since you weren't a science major.

I am glad I did it, but I went part time for a few years, then full time, but this was before I was married and had a child. I am not sure at this point if I would make that decision again. I would have a really hard time getting my studying done along with working, taking care of a home and a young child.

Personally, I don't think education is ever a waste. I think I would try a couple of the masters classes and see how it goes. Taking classes at the undergrad and at the masters level is much different IMO. You might end up liking them a lot more than you might think.

Yes I would do it and I would do it in the field I am interested in. If I am taking time away from my kids I am doing it for something I really really want. It's never too late.

Then GO for it! FM Neenie...I think she completed her degree a little later on or JTK (her and her husband are both nurses and I know he finished school later on)...But in my opinion it really doesn't matter. After the first semester you'll fall right into it. And remember, you're only going for 2-2.5 years for your BA and then you can go on for your Masters once you're a nurse! I think its an amazing field for women, especially those with families...you'll have so much flexibility! Ok, can I live vicariously through you?!Chat Icon GL with whatever you decide to do!

I would totally go for it if it's something you have a passion for. I think the experience would be a lot better if it's something you want to do.
Lactation Consulting is something I had considered.

I think it is always worth it if it means you will be going back for something that interests you and you are not interested/fulfilled in what you are doing now AND you can afford it. Sounds like this is a good chance, so yes, I think you should.
