Missed growth spurt

So I think I missed a growth spurt. I didn't know much about them but after doing some reading and looking back, I realize my 6 week old baby was much hungrier than usual for a few days. But I still tried to hold her off to keep her on her 3 hour schedule as much as I could. I did give her alittle more if she still seemed hungry after her usual feeding, but I definitely didn't feed on demand like I should have and now I'm concerned she didn't get enough to eat during the growth spurt. Did that do anything to hurt the baby or affect her growth in any way?

I admit that since Ive had a weight problem all my life, I've been too obsessed with making sure I don't overfeed her that I missed the cues, big time. I feel so guilty. Did I do anything to hurt my baby?

Dont beat yourself up, I think shes fine. However, I definitely would not worry about a schedule for a 6 week old. Thats too young and she should be fed on demand. Are you breastfeeding? Our ped didnt put my DD on a schedule until she was about 4 months. I breastfeed her and at 6 weeks I felt like i was constantly nursing her.

You didn't hurt her, but like the other girls said, I would def. feed on demand at that age.

At that age I would not force a 3 hr schedule or any schedule for that matter. Also, you can't overfeed. If they are too full they will just spit it up.

I also would step away from reading too many sites or books. Trust your instinct. Being a mom is not an exact science. Its really more baout going with your gut.

I wouldn't worry. If you gave her more than usual that should be good enough. I have dd on a 3 hr schedule too (except night time)....and I'm pretty sure she's due for a growth spurt any day now so ill ae what happens

Re: Missed growth spurt

You did no harm!!!!
My twins were on a 3 hour schedule from the time they came home from the nicu. When they would wake hungry during growth spurts not at a feeding time, I would just give them a little and Up the amount at their next feeding. I also pumped for them, so I didnt have a lot of extra to just give them if they seemed hungry. Both my ped and my LC said I was doing a good thing.

I'm trying to establish healthy eating habits and keep my child at a healthy weight by not stuffing a bottle in her mouth every time she cries.

I agree with pretty much everything the others have said, but I did want to add that it is not possible to overfeed a baby that tiny. They will stop eating when they are full. That's what I've heard and has been my experience, anyhow...

right, which is why i fed her more wen she didn't seem satisfied by the usual amount. but i didnt realize the crying just an hour after a feeding was hunger. After i did some reading about growth spurts i felt guilty about it and posted. im obviously not trying to deprive my child of food when she's hungry. This is my first child and I'm trying to learn as i go.

Im not commenting either way, but I think these ladies are reacting to your comment about being obsessed that you dont overfeed her, so much so that is caused you to miss hunger clues. It is a lreaning experience for all of us, but I dont believe anyone accused you of starving your baby, but reacted to your own admission of being obsessed with not overfeeding the baby, due to your own weight issues.

I get that. But weight issues or not, I don't think any of us want to overfeed our babies. So I don't see it as "projecting my weight issues onto my child," an accusation of which I am obviously resentful.

In any case, thanks to everyone for all the comments. I have to go. Baby's crying. Maybe she's hungry.

Re: Missed growth spurt

I doubt you did anything to hurt your baby. If your baby was hungry enough, she would have kept crying, kwim?

Going forward, you may want to consider feeding on demand. My DD was HUGE, evenat a month early, and was really heavy. My ped always told me feed as much as she wants, babies won't overeat. And I always did that. I was worried since she was sooooo heavy. Like a little jabba the hut. LOL.But I followed my peds directions and always fed on demand. DD remained heavy until she turned around 2, and now at 4 she is so skinny. So my ped was right.

Just don't give cookies or food as rewards, and don't make too much of food once your child becomes old enough to understand.

For ex, I let my DD have anything she wants and never used candy or cookies as a reward. And my DD now will only take like 2 cookies, and say, Im full. Whereas friends or family who made certain foods off limits, a reward or a no no, those kids go crazy when they are around candy, cookies, etc. KWIM?

I agree with this. My DS, now 5, was huge as an infant. 22 pounds by 6 months. He ate a ton, drained every bottle, so hungry! I heard from people that we were over-feeding. But I just fed on demand. He is skinny now. Still loves to eat, but in moderation.

How many ounces is she getting per feeding? I think at 6 weeks, we noticed he cried a lot and seemed hungry after feedings, so we increased the amount per feeding, and he ate about every 3 hours, with a 5-6 hour stretch at night of sleep.

Good luck - I remember those early days when I felt very unsure of myself- it gets easier!Chat Icon

Re: Missed growth spurt

I wanted to comment on ths because I never fed my children on demand. My kids were both on 3-4 hour schedules from the beginning and it worked beautifully for all of us. I see way too many people (family and friends) that every time a baby cries they throw milk at it and it obviously soothes the child so they calm down. During a growth spurt my kids usually ate more at each feeding. If they cried in between feedings I always made sure that it was not another issue - bored, tired, wanting to be rocked etc. sometimes a simple change of scenery was all they needed. Obviously, if nothing worked, I would try a bottle, but more often then not there was another reason for the crying. I did not let them CIO but tried to find other solutions other than milk.

To the OP - don't worry, if your baby was hungry they would definitely let you know. Chat Icon
